Iniciando este nuevo año, publicamos una entrevista exclusiva con los legendarios japoneses Metalucifer realizada durante su visita a Colombia y Sudamérica a finales del año pasado. En el marco de la gira de promoción de su nuevo disco, la banda sacudió las cabezas y melenas de sus seguidores latinos y, de paso, encontró en la estatua de Shakira una inesperada fuente de inspiración que dio forma a su propio «Heavy Metal Waka-Waka». En pleno cenit de los ochentas, un músico japonés llamado Gezol fundaría una de las agrupaciones que marcó un antes y un después en la historia musical metalera de su país: SABBAT, cuya leyenda le ha otorgado un espacio junto con sus predecesoras en el Black Metal en Occidente, VENOM y BATHORY. No obstante, los noventas llegaron; nuevas tendencias sonoras empezaron gradualmente a transformar el sonido metalero.
Preocupado por ello y como una manera de reivindicar sus raíces, Gezol tomó las riendas fundando en 1995 su proyecto alterno Metalucifer, una banda que hasta el sol de hoy vanagloria con ahínco el Heavy Metal tradicional, si, ese metal de vieja guardia, en los escenarios mundiales. De ese modo, un sonido propio enmarcado en esa tradición ha llevado a Metalucifer a tener una fuerte identidad acercándose a los diversos metal maniacs por todo el mundo, sin importar las diferencias culturales e idiomáticas.
Con motivo de su trigésimo aniversario, Gezol visitó Latinoamérica a finales del 2025 para celebrar con mucho ruido promoviendo su última producción discográfica Heavy Metal Ninja (EP, 2022). Los privilegiados fanáticos recibieron la bendición musical de ver a esta gran leyenda nipona en los escenarios de México, Brasil, Chile, Ecuador y Colombia; en esta última nación cafetera Gezol realizó tres shows, uno de ellos por primera vez en la ciudad costera de Barranquilla (los otros dos fueron en Cali y Bogotá).
Sin embargo, lo viral no fueron sus presentaciones sino la famosa foto en la que posa bajo la nueva estatua de Shakira, generando divididas opiniones y respuestas; en palabras de Gezol, toda crítica es válida demostrando así el profundo respeto hacia sus fans.
En la reciente edición de Asian Music Day 2025 realizada el pasado sábado 20 de diciembre, en el que Bunka Wave celebra y reconoce el esfuerzo y el legado musical de los artistas asiáticos acercándonos al mundo hispano cada año, decidimos contactarlos para una entrevista y para abrir espacio a sus canciones, las cuales sonaron por espacio de una hora.
A pesar de las celebraciones de fin de año y al recio invierno en Norteamérica (que todavía padecemos al cierre de esta nota), por fin podemos presentarles la amena y dinámica conversación que sostuvimos con él; un recorrido de su carrera musical, de su visión acerca de la escena metalera en el presente, y su feedback de la famosa foto con la diva del Pop, en el que no sería raro en el futuro un disco dedicado a un «Heavy Metal Waka-Waka«.
Bunka Wave. Muchas gracias por aceptarnos esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica. De antemano les enviamos nuestras felicitaciones por sus 30 años de carrera musical cuya música ha sacudido nuestras cabezas y melenas con su potente heavy metal. ¿Cuál ha sido el factor más importante en permanecer unidos como banda y mantenerse actualmente activos en la escena metalera?
GEZOL. Gracias a ustedes. En el caso de Metalucifer, el punto más importante es “ningún cambio”. Inicié Metalucifer como un símbolo de la resurrección musical de los tradicionales, recordados y típicos ochentas. Desde entonces, hemos estado continuando este inherente destino. Y de paso, muchas gracias por tus palabras sobre nuestro trigésimo aniversario. Sin embargo, ¡nos vemos en nuestro próximo cuadragésimo aniversario, chicos! Yeah!
B.W. Que fascinante e increíble forma de celebrar su trigésimo aniversario liderando una gira por Latinoamérica, incluyendo mi país, Colombia. ¿Qué tipo de expectativas tenían cada uno antes de embarcarse en esta gira? ¿Sintieron que este tour en vivo cumplió cabalmente dichas expectativas?
G. Bueno, como lo has imaginado, ¡los metaleros latinos son realmente grandiosos e increíbles! Cuando estuvimos de gira allá, realmente querían oír y disfrutar del verdadero y tradicional Heavy Metal, y eso lo confirmé una y otra vez, en cada show. Tuvimos la visión de que así pasaría en los países latinoamericanos; esa fue nuestra expectativa la cual se convirtió en realidad. Los artistas siempre esperamos con muchas ansias ese apoyo irrestricto del público, porque tenemos que hacer que todos nos sintamos como si fuéramos rock stars.
Nadie quiere tocar en vivo triste, cansado y con el corazón apagado y eso nunca lo haremos. Hacemos nuestro espectáculo como la mejor experiencia en vivo tanto para el artista como para toda la banda, y por eso el público latino fue increíble en cada presentación. Tanta fue la euforia que nos transmitieron que los miembros alemanes se sorprendieron, se emocionaron y se dejaron contagiar por esa energía del público latino, a pesar de que el mejor país para el Metal es Alemania.
Te comparto un testimonio: Nuestro guitarrista, Elizablumi, me contó lo emocionado que estaba al ver el aumento de muchos fanáticos de la banda en 10 años (nuestra última gira fue en el 2015). Hoy en día vemos que existen muchos tipos de Metal, por lo que cada quien escoge su género o su artista favorito, haciendo que en esta situación sea más difícil sobrevivir en el mundo como banda que reúne más seguidores.
B. W. Sabemos que disfrutaron demasiado esta visita a Colombia ¿Cómo evalúas a los metaleros colombianos? ¿Cuál fue el mejor recuerdo o esa anécdota que nunca olvidarán acerca de Colombia?
G. El tour manager nos llevó a conocer algunos sitios turísticos en cada lugar y pudimos por fin probar el delicioso café colombiano. ¡Estuvimos muy contentos! Fue una buena anécdota cuando nos tomamos unas cuantas fotos en frente de la gran estatua de Shakira.
Recibimos críticas por algunos como “¿Por qué se toman fotos en frente de una estatua de una cantante de Pop?” Sinceramente, nunca he escuchado a Shakira antes de estar allá. Ni siquiera sabíamos qué canciones canta, pero nos tomamos la foto sin dudarlo y la verdad, no nos importó en absoluto. Para nosotros, esa estatua no hace la diferencia con un castillo, un puente u otro sitio turístico famoso.
Como los nazis o los japoneses imperiales, los fans maníacos del Heavy Metal critican desde su posición conservadora demostrando un profundo respeto por el Heavy Metal tradicional y eso lo admiro. La próxima vez, no intentaré probar los helados locales colombianos.
Pero si debo aplaudir a nuestros fans colombianos quienes nos apoyaron en nuestros shows derrochando su emoción cantando cada tema con nosotros. Creo que hicimos lo mejor en la tarima y realmente agradezco enormemente a todos los fans. La próxima vez, nos juntaremos para tomarnos una foto en frente de la estatua de Elkin Ramírez. ¡Por favor, hagan una estatua de él pronto!
B. W. La banda ha tenido una larga pausa entre su último EP Heavy Metal Ninja (2022) y su álbum de estudio Heavy Metal Bulldozer (2009), a pesar de que han estado muy activos grabando para discos compilatorios, compartidos con otros grupos y grabaciones en vivo. ¿Por qué la banda decidió dedicarle más tiempo y energía produciendo este tipo de formatos en vez de producir más álbumes de estudio completo?
G. Hemos grabado y lanzado varios discos como We’re Still Metal Kids (compartido con SABBAT) en el 2017, y dos años después lanzamos Heavy Metal Tank (2019). We’re Still Metal Kids está incluido además en el álbum Heavy Metal Tank.
No obstante, quería sacar un sencillo EP, así que decidí primero lanzar el EP en mención y luego promoví Heavy Metal Tank; por cierto, fue compuesto como una compilación pero es un verdadero álbum de estudio. Maneja el formato de mini-álbum (incluí 4 nuevas canciones) más un bonus track. Honestamente, quería lanzar solo los 4 temas, pero a la disquera no le gustó la idea del estilo de este formato, así que, bueno, ya sabes… Como puedes ver, desde Bulldozer nunca paramos de grabar. Y luego tuvimos algunas giras y shows en vivo. Y en todo este tiempo no sólo se destinó para Metalucifer.
Mi banda principal es SABBAT, así que estaba realmente ocupado también con sus giras y sus conciertos; y, además, la banda cambiaba constantemente de alineación. Más aún, hay algo que tengo que confesarte por si no lo sabes: cada vez es más difícil crear una composición de Heavy Metal tradicional al estilo ochentero. Por eso no quiero melodías aburridas y planas.
Tengo que demostrar a mis camaradas metaleros que podemos cantar juntos una y otra vez en cada show. Honestamente, tengo más temas para el próximo disco, pero me faltan las letras. Así que tengo que tomar un tiempo para sentarme a escribirlas y crear un poco más de canciones para tal fin.

B. W. ¿Cuál es tu visión y tu opinión personal acerca de la actual escena metalera hoy?
G. Actualmente hay muchos géneros musicales diferentes del Metal. Globalmente, parece que el Heavy Metal tradicional está perdiendo su momento. Como te lo había dicho antes, es difícil componer este tipo de música. Muchas ideas ya existen desde antes y han funcionado gracias a nuestros predecesores. Pero espero que nadie se dé por vencido y sigan guerreando.
Nuestros predecesores como Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, Manowar, Accept, y otros más, todavía siguen activos y más fuertes que nunca por lo que no vamos a desfallecer en nuestra misión. Y en ese orden, quiero enfatizarte algo, me encanta mucho oír a Kraken.
Es muy triste que Elkin haya fallecido. Uno de los discos que me fascina escuchar es Sobre Esta Tierra, en especial este tema que para mí es una obra maestra: No Importa Que Me Mientas. ¡Guau! Otro álbum que olvidé obtener estando en Colombia y que también me encanta, el Kraken VII: Los Pasos del Titán.
B. W. Cuéntanos tus planes para este 2026.
G. Será un año sabático. Metalucifer se tomará un receso. No tenemos ningún concierto o gira programada en Japón. Pero tenemos algunas ofertas para shows hacia otros países que nunca hemos visitado antes. Y haremos esos recitales con nuestros dos músicos alemanes, ya que ellos están agendados con SABBAT para la gira europea (verano-otoño).
B. W. Arigato gozaimasu! Muchas gracias por aceptar esta entrevista. Me gustaría que les enviaras un saludo a nuestra audiencia en Colombia y en Latinoamérica por medio de Bunka Wave.
G. ¿Están interesados en el Metal Asiático? Ya hay Metal tradicional en China. También en Indonesia, Malasia y Tailandia que son muy buenos. Indonesia tiene muchas bandas de Death Metal para esparcir por el mundo; hay unos cuantos grupos que hacen Metal en Singapur. Filipinas no se queda atrás con potentes agrupaciones de Death Thrash.
En Japón, vas a oír buenas bandas de Hard Rock hechas por mujeres, pero aunque no es de mi interés si debo admitir que LOVEBITES son muy buenas. Sin embargo, es vergonzoso que su vestuario sea limitado por su propio escenario que no refleja realmente una verdadera imagen metalera. Y claro, en Japón hay más bandas las cuales algunas están tocando Thrash Metal y Speed Metal Melódico siendo muy populares. Y aunque pareciera que el Heavy Metal tradicional quedó relegado en el rincón del olvido, sigue vivo gracias a ustedes. Arigato!

At the middle of the eighties, a Japanese musician named Gezol founded one of the bands that marked a turning point in the history of the metal music in his country: SABBAT, whose legend has earned them a place alongside their Western black metal predecessors, VENOM and BATHORY. However, the nineties arrived; new tune trends gradually began to transform how we used to hear the old school metal.
Concerned about this and as a way to preserve his roots, Gezol established his side project Metalucifer in 1995, a band that proudly plays the old-school Heavy Metal on stages around the world today! Thus, a unique sound made under the tradition has allowed Metalucifer to raise and confirm a strong identity, connecting with diverse metal maniacs overseas, regardless of cultural and linguistic differences.
To celebrate their 30th anniversary, Gezol visited Latin America at the end of 2025 celebrating with loudness, promoting their latest album, Heavy Metal Ninja (EP, 2022). Gifted fans received his musical blessing watching this great Japanese legend on stages in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Colombia; in this country, Gezol performed three shows, one of them for the first time in the coastal city of Barranquilla (the other two were in Cali and Bogotá).
However, what went viral wasn’t his performances, but the famous photo in which he poses under the new Shakira statue, generating divided opinions and feedbacks. Nevertheless, in Gezol’s words, any criticism is valid, because it is a demonstration of his profound respect for his fans.
At the recent edition of Asian Music Day 2025, made last Saturday, December 20, we decided to contact them for an interview and to play their songs on air, and we did it for an hour. Despite the holidays and the harsh winter (which we are still enduring when this article was issued), finally we can introduce you this engaging and dynamic conversation we had with him.
Together, we explored his musical career, his vision of the current metal scene, and his feedback about the famous photo with the Colombian pop diva. It couldn’t be weird that a Heavy Metal Waka-Waka might release as a new name for a future full-length or EP.
Bunka Wave. What terrific way to celebrate your 30 years leading a live tour in Latin America, indeed you have included my country, Colombia. What kind of expectations did everyone have before about this Latin tour? Did you feel that this live tour fulfilled those expectations?
Gezol. As you imagined, Latino Metal kids are really awesome!!! As we toured there, they really want traditional Heavy Metal, I confirmed again! We had the image it for Latin American countries and expected it. And it became real one. Music artists always expect exciting support, because, we have to make our feeling like we have come a rock star.
Nobody wants to play in sadness, with tired heart, and does not want to do it! It’s to show the best live performance as musicians and a band! So, Latin kids were awesome!!! That German members were really excited and surprised although Germany is best Metal country! It was the proof: our guitarist Elizablumi said as looks like fans were increasing than 10 years ago (our last tour was in 2015) Nowadays, it’s a lot of kinds of Metal, people choose their favorite each one doing the situation it’s hard to survive in the world.
B. W. We know you have enjoyed a lot of visiting Colombia. Being your first time in my country, how you assess the metal fans there? What was your best memory moment that you will never forget about Colombia?
G. Yeah, the tour manager took us sightseeing in each place and could drink some delicious coffee. We were happy! A good memory was that we took some pictures in front of the big Shakira statue.
We received criticism from many people. They asked, “Why are you taking a photo in front of a statue of a pop singer?” We had never even heard of Shakira before we got there. We didn’t know what songs she sang, but we took a photo without any hesitation. It doesn’t matter. To us, the statue is no different from a castle or a bridge at a famous tourist spot.
Like the Nazis or Imperial Japan, Maniac Metal Fans criticized conservatively, it shows a deep respect for traditional Heavy Metal. On the contrary, I respect that. Next time, I won’t try the Colombian local ice cream. Colombian fans supported our shows.
They get excited and sing along. I think we could play our best and I really appreciate all fans and the action. Next time, we’ll line up and take a photo in front of the Elkin Ramírez statue. Please, prepare a statue of him!!!
B. W. It was a large hiatus between your last EP Heavy Metal Ninja (2022) and your full-length studio album Heavy Metal Bulldozer (2009), although you have been active in split albums, compilations and live albums. Why did the band decide to invest more of their time producing these kinds of recording formats instead of producing more studio albums?
G. We have recorded, and, released We’re Still Metal Kids (Split w. SABBAT) in 2017, and we released Heavy Metal Tank in 2019; «We’re Still Metal Kids» is included in also Heavy Metal Tank album. However, I wanted to a single EP, so, I mixed down only We’re Still Metal Kids first and released, and Heavy Metal Tank is written like a “compilation” … it’s a brand album. It’s a kind of format like Mini album (brand new 4 songs) plus bonus track. Honestly, I wanted to release with only the new 4 songs. However, labels dislike Mini album style. Anyway…
Since Bulldozer, as you can look, it was nonstop… Yeah, we could not do recording. So, we had some tours and live shows, and the time was not spent on only Metalucifer. My main band is SABBAT. So, it was really busy with the live shows and the tours, and bands got members changing.
Moreover, if you don’t know anything, I must confess here, it’s very hard to create “80ies style Traditional Heavy Metal composition”. I don’t need any boring tunes. I need showing our Metal comrades can sing together again for the next time. Honestly, I have some songs for next album, but I have no lyrics. So, I must write them and need to create little more songs.

B. W. What is your personal and wisdom vision about the current metal music movement today?
G. As I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of different types of Metal these days. Globally, it seems like traditional heavy metal is losing momentum. As I wrote, it’s difficult to create traditional Heavy Metal songs. So many good ideas have already been worked on by our predecessors.
But I hope you don’t give up and keep trying. Our predecessors (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, Accept, Manowar, etc…) are still going strong, so we shouldn’t sink. I also like Kraken a lot. So, it’s very sad that Elkin passed away. I really like their album titled “Sobre esta tierra”; the song «No importa que mientas» is a masterpiece! Oh! Shit! I’ve forgotten to get this album over there, Kraken VII: Los Pasos del Titán.
B. W. Any plans for the band next year?
G. This new year is a sabbatical year. Metalucifer is taking a break. We don’t have any shows planned in Japan. But we have some offers for shows from countries we’ve never been to before. And we’ll be doing these shows with that two German guys. They’re scheduled during SABBAT’s Euro Tour.
B. W. Arigato gozaimasu, muchas gracias or thank you very much for this interview and I would like you send a greeting to our audience in Colombia and Latin America throughout our media, Bunka Wave.
G. Are you interested in Asian metal? There’s some traditional heavy metal in China. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand are also good. Indonesia has a lot of Death Metal, though. There are a few Metal bands in Singapore. There are Death Thrash bands in the Philippines. In Japan, there are Hard Music bands made up of all-female bands. I’m not interested, but LOVEBITES is good.
However, it’s a shame that her fashion is limited to her own stage costumes and doesn’t have a Metal image. There are many others. Thrash Metal and Melodic Speed Metal are the most popular in Japan. Traditional Heavy Metal seems to be left out in the cold. But it lives on. So, you too, Die Hard!!! Thank you!
