CANTOY surgió de una forma particular: a través de la Internet fue que se conocieron. Mucho antes, la prehistoria de la banda nos transporta al año 2004 cuando un proyecto llamado Candy ★ Toybox emergió para dejar los cimientos de lo que sería en el 2009 el nacimiento de un cuarteto liderado por la bellísima pero rebelde miri-pow en la voz, la guitarra de su amigo Catherine, HAGA-Chang comandando el bajo y la contundencia de la batería a cargo de Ken. El resultado sin duda es un sonido muy fuerte, veloz en la percusión y en las cuerdas pero con un toque muy femenino lo cual se les haya catalogado como una banda Hardcore with Cute Vocal; sus fans asisten fielmente en masa a sus conciertos siendo recordados en el 2010 en su primera gira nacional luego de su álbum debut MissMatch!?, producido por Splatter Records. Este año que ya acaba, CANTOY lanzó al mercado el pasado 25 de julio su segunda producción musical llamada Kill, el cual llamó la atención de este lado del mundo, por lo que oficialmente serán los invitados de honor para abrir la Tekkoshocon 2013, una de las importantes convenciones de anime de Pensilvania que se organiza anualmente en la ciudad de Pittsburgh (aprox. a 6 horas de Filadelfia) en los albores de la primavera (del 5 al 7 de abril), compartiendo escenario con Dazzle Vision. Mientras tanto, les publicamos esta amena conversación que tuvimos con todos sus integrantes quienes entre risas y buen humor nos respondieron nuestro cuestionario a la espera que puedan tocar en algún festival de rock en Latinoamérica pronto.

Colectivo Bunka. Gracias por atendernos en esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica. Mi primera pregunta es que me cuenten en pocas palabras, ¿cómo fue que se conocieron para tocar juntos como CANTOY?

Catherine. miri-pow y yo nos conocimos en un portal en línea para la búsqueda de miembros de la banda. Fue realmente sorprendente ya que no había un sitio así. Es casi como una web de juegos de rol.

miri-pow. Es correcto. Si Catherine y yo no nos habíamos conectado en ese sitio no existiría CANTOY.

HAGA-Chang. Después de eso, yo las conocí también a través del Internet, y me convertí en su bajista de apoyo. Por supuesto, instantáneamente ellas sabían lo grande que era y fue así como pasé a ser un miembro titular de la banda.

Ken. Pero no tenían baterista, así que tuve que ayudarlos. En realidad, yo solía tocar en los mismos conciertos de CANTOY con una banda diferente, por lo que luego pudimos conocernos bastante bien.

C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus más importantes influencias musicales que los inspiran para crear su propio sonido?

Ken. Te aseguro muy bien que cada miembro tiene gustos diferentes.

Catherine. Si estás buscando nombrar una banda, te diría que la banda japonesa Mad Capsule Markets tiene una gran influencia.

miri-pow. Cualquier cosa digital o ruidosa ha tenido una marcada influencia en esta banda. Cuanto más ruidosa sea, más nos encanta. (Sonríe).

C. B. ¿Qué temas inspiran a CANTOY para componer y tocar sus canciones?

Catherine. En primer lugar, tenemos ideas de las cosas que hacemos todos los días. Esa es siempre la inspiración que nos construye.

HAGA-Chang. También escribo canciones, pero estoy de acuerdo con Catherine, el concepto musical de CANTOY gira en torno a las cosas cotidianas.

Catherine. Solemos beber cerveza todos los días, ¿no es así?

Haga-Chang. (Risas) ¡Sí, siempre lo hacemos!

C. B. miri-pow, usted fue una reconocida modelo para la revista Zipper. ¿Qué anécdotas y lecciones aprendió en el mundo del modelaje que ahora aplica como vocalista de CANTOY?

miri-pow. La capacidad de ser amable con la gente. Sé que no se escucha mucho de que una banda de punk diga eso, pero es importante. He recibido mucha ayuda y el aliento de la gente del mundo del modelaje. Debido a esa experiencia es que quiero tratar de ser cortés con todo el mundo.

C. B. Ustedes como banda tocarán por primera vez en los Estados Unidos en el Tekkoshocon 2013. ¿Cuáles son sus expectativas sobre esta presentación para sus fans en esta convención de anime en el país? Y, ¿Qué puede esperar el público por su presentación en esta grandiosa convención de anime?

Catherine. Deberán esperar un espectáculo emocionante, no sólo en la forma como sonamos sino además en la forma como actuamos en la tarima. ¡Nos volveremos locos!

miri-pow. Definitivamente verán un espectáculo que nadie ha visto antes.

C. B. ¿Conocen o han escuchado de algún grupo o músico latinoamericano? (Si su respuesta es no, ¿qué le gustaría saber de América Latina en cuanto a su música?)

HAGA-Chang. Conozco a un grupo llamado CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy), cuando fui a ver a Kasabian tiempo atrás ellos fueron los teloneros. Son una banda brasileña.

Ken. No conozco a ninguno, pero estoy interesado en ellos.

HAGA-Chang. No había muchas bandas latinoamericanas en el lugar donde nací. Sin embargo, una vez cada año hay un Carnaval de Samba, por lo que sé mucho de música samba. ¡Me encanta!

Catherine. Todo lo que recuerdo de ese Carnaval era ver los traseros al aire de las chicas bailando samba (Risas).

C. B. ¿Cuáles son las diferencias y similitudes entre sus discos Miss Match?! y Kill?

Catherine. Hmmm, esa es una buena pregunta.

Ken. En cuanto a los elementos digitales y sonoridad, son casi lo mismo. Sin embargo, siento que Kill es más valioso en un mayor entretenimiento sonoro.

Catherine. En la producción, la única similitud era nuestro ingeniero de sonido. Pero esta vez teníamos un mayor presupuesto y un estudio diferente, así que creo que logramos ir más hacia nuestro verdadero sonido.

C. B. En la historia de la banda, ¿cuál ha sido el concierto más importante que nunca olvidarán? ¿Por qué?

miri-pow. Ha habido grandes y muchos conciertos en vivo que no podría elegir. Hubo uno muy bueno recientemente, sin embargo, cuando tocamos fuera bajo la lluvia todo el mundo estaba bailando, fue muy divertido.

Catherine. Ese fue el concierto cuando aprendí a tocar con una guitarra mojada, ¡pero estuvo OK!

miri-pow. Además, usé un micrófono húmedo y estuvo muy  bien. Pero realmente todo fue muy divertido. Tocar al aire libre siempre será una sensación impresionante.

C. B. ¿Cómo imaginan a CANTOY en un par de años, en el futuro?

Ken. Me imagino que voy a estar tocando en la banda, mientras estaré administrando una tienda de sushi.

Catherine. Seré feliz si todo el mundo en la banda está feliz. Por supuesto, voy a estar feliz si yo soy feliz también.

HAGA-Chang. Incluso si tengo hijos y una familia, espero que todavía sea capaz de hacer muy buena música.

miri-pow. Quiero seguir haciendo mi mejor desempeño y desafiarme a mí misma como artista. Quiero estar moviéndome y agitándome con Cantoy en el futuro.

C. B. Nuevamente, muchas gracias por responder esta entrevista y me gustaría que enviaran un saludo a nuestra audiencia en Colombia y Latinoamérica a través del Colectivo Bunka.

HAGA-Chang. Quiero visitar América Latina, específicamente Brasil. Sé que los festivales de rock brasileños son increíbles. Haremos nuestro mejor esfuerzo para aparecer en un festival de rock así que, ¡por favor espérennos!

miri-pow. Queremos ir por todo el mundo, y no sólo Japón. Por favor, apóyennos. Algún día vamos a estar allá, ¡sólo espérennos!

CANTOY emerged in a particular way: through the Internet was that they met. Long before, the prehistory of the band takes us to 2004 when a project called Candy ★ Toybox emerged to leave the foundations of what would become in 2009 the birth of a quartet led by the beautiful but rebellious miri-pow in the voice, the guitar of his friend Catherine, HAGA-Chan (bassist) and the strength of drums by Ken. The result is certainly a very loud, fast on percussion and strings but with a female touch who they have been tagged as a Hardcore with cute vocal band, their faithfully fans to attend their concerts being remembered in 2010 during their first national tour after they have released their debut album MissMatch!?, produced by Splatter Records. This year already over, CANTOY released last July 25 their second musical production called Kill, which caught attention to this side of the world, so officially will be the Japanese honor guests to open the Tekkoshocon 2013, one of the major PA anime conventions that is held annually in the city of Pittsburgh (about 6 hours from Philadelphia) at the beginning of spring (5/4 to 7/4), sharing stage with Dazzle Vision. Meanwhile, we publish this pleasant conversation we had with all members who laughs and with good humor we responded to our questionnaire hopes they can play some rock festival in Latin America coming soon.

Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much to attend us in this interview for Colombia and Latin America. My first question is, how did you meet to play together?

Catherine. miri-pow and I met on an online site for finding band members. It was really surprising that there was a site like that. It’s almost like a role-playing site.

miri-pow. That’s right. If Catherine and I hadn’t hooked up on that site there would be no CANTOY.

HAGA-Chang. After that, I also met them through the internet, and I became their support bassist. Of course, they instantly knew how great I was and I became a full member of the band.

Ken. But they had no drummer, so I had to help them! Actually, I used to play the same shows as CANTOY in a different band, so we got to know each other pretty well.

C. B. What are your biggest music influences to feel inspired in create your own sound?

Ken. I’m pretty sure that every member has different tastes.

Catherine. If you’re looking to name one band, I’d say the Japanese band Mad Capsule Markets has a big influence.

miri-pow. Anything digital or loud has had an influence on this band. The louder it is, the more we like it! (Lol)

C. B. What topics inspire to CANTOY to compose and play the songs?

Catherine. First, we get ideas from the things that we do every day. That’s always the inspiration we build on.

HAGA-Chang. I also write songs too, but I’m the same with Catherine. CANTOY’s musical concept revolves around everyday things.

Catherine. We drink beer every day, right?

HAGA-Chang. (Lol) We do!

C. B. miri-pow, you have been a model for the popular fashion magazine Zipper. What important lessons learned when you were in the world of modeling to apply now as CANTOY’s vocalist?

miri-pow. The ability to be nice to people. I know you don’t hear that a lot from a punk band, but it’s important. I received a lot of help and encouragement from people in modeling. Because of that experience I want to try and be courteous to everyone.

C. B. You will play first time in America, at Tekkoshocon 2013. What are your expectations about this performance in the U.S. for your fans in this anime convention? And, what will the audience expect for your concert in this awesome anime convention?

Catherine. They should expect an exciting show. Not just in the way we sound, but the way we act. We go crazy!

miri-pow. They’ll definitely see a show that no one has ever seen before.

C. B. Did you know or did you hear any Latin America band or musician? (If your answer is no, what would you like to know of Latin America about your music?)

HAGA-Chang. I know a band called CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy). When I went to see Kasabian a while back they opened for them. They are a Brazilian band.

Ken. I don’t know any, but I’m interested in them!

HAGA-Chang. There was not a lot of Latin American music in the place I was born. However, once very year, there is a Samba Carnival Festival so I know a lot about samba music. I love it.

Catherine. All I remember from that Samba Carnival Festival was looking at girls’ butts. Lol!

C. B. What are the differences and similarities between MissMatch?! and Kill albums?

Catherine. Mmm, this is a good question.

Ken. As far as the digital elements and loudness, they’re about the same. However, I feel that Kill is higher on entertainment value.

Catherine. In production, the only similarity was our sound engineer. But this time we had a bigger budget and a different studio, so I think we got to go further toward our true sound.

C. B. In the history of the band, what has been the most important concert that you will never forget? Why?

miri-pow. There have been so many great lives I can’t choose. There was a really good one recently, though, when we played outside in the pouring rain. Everyone was dancing and it was really fun.

Catherine. That’s the concert when I learned that it was okay to play with a wet guitar!

miri-pow. Using a wet mic is okay, too! But really, it was a lot of fun. Playing outside is always an awesome feeling.

C. B. How do you imagine the band in a couple of years, in the future?

Ken. I imagine I will be playing in the band while managing a Sushi shop!

Catherine. I’ll be happy if everyone in the band is happy. Of course, I’ll be happy if I’m happy, too!

HAGA-Chang. Even if I have kids and a family, I hope I’m still able to make good music.

miri-pow. I want to continue doing my best and challenging myself. I want to be moving and shaking in the future.

C. B. Again, thank you very much for this interview and I would like you send a greeting to our audience in Colombia and Latin America via Colectivo Bunka.

HAGA-Chang. I want to visit Latin America, specifically Brazil. I know that Brazilian rock festivals are amazing! We’ll do our best to appear in such a rock festival so please wait for it!
