Empezando este año nuevo, dialogamos con este talentoso trío quienes están celebrando su vigésimo aniversario desde el 2015 lanzando a nivel global su más reciente EP “Flow”, ya disponible en el ciberespacio para todos sus fans. – This New Year, we spoke with Swinging Popsicle who were celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2015 and have released their EP “Flow”, available online for their overseas fans right now.

Hace 20 años un aviso en el periódico llamó la atención de varios bajistas para una nueva banda. Al final de las audiciones, el elegido fue Hironobu Hirata y fue así que junto con la cantante Mineko Fujishima y el guitarrista Osamu Shimada surgió Swinging Popsicle proponiéndonos un pop rock fresco y juvenil, el cual llamó la atención de Sony Music Entertainment quienes en 1998 los ficharon para lanzar su álbum homónimo debutando con éxito con temas como “Parade” y “Joy of Living” en los primeros puestos de la Oricon.
Corea del Sur fue su primer concierto internacional en 2005 luego de su exitosa canción “I Just Wanna Kiss You”, la más popular en su gira por Japón. Pero al año siguiente, Swinging Popsicle cruzó al otro lado del hemisferio conquistando con su música a los Estados Unidos, debutando en la Fanime MusicFest (San Jose, CA), con su tema “Clash” que fue usada como soundtrack para el anime coreano Cracker; después de eso, el trío japonés siguió visitando Norteamérica tocando en vivo para la Anime Mid Atlantic (Richmond, VA) y la New York Anime Fest, ambas en el 2007. Cabe resaltar que su música ha sido ampliamente usada por la empresa de videojuegos NITROPLUS PC para varios de ellos como SUMAGA (STAR MINE GIRL) y AXANAEL. 2009 fue el año en el que ellos lanzaron su CD “Loud Cut”, con versiones renovadas de “Afterglow” y “Let Me Fly”. En la última década, el grupo fue nominado como Mejor Banda Japonesa de Rock por la desaparecida revista Shojo Beat.
En el 2015, Swinging Popsicle celebró su vigésimo año de carrera musical lanzando el pasado 10 de diciembre su EP “Flow”, en el que ya está disponible en las plataformas iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, y Google Play. Por ello, dialogamos con sus integrantes quienes recuerdan con emoción su show en la ciudad de Monterrey, en México, en marzo de 2008, siendo su primer encuentro con sus seguidores en Latinoamérica.
Colectivo Bunka. Les agradecemos que aceptaran nuestra entrevista exclusiva para Colombia y América Latina. Felicidades por su vigésimo aniversario. Mi primera pregunta es, ¿cuál su secreto para mantenerse activos en estos 20 años de carrera musical?
Hirata. No intentar ser demasiado duro. Tomar las cosas con calma.
Fujishima. A ti, ¡muchas gracias! Básicamente, sin alterar nuestro ritmo. Nosotros no hacemos las cosas apresuradamente. Pero cuando decidimos a hacer algo, nos concentramos y damos toda nuestra energía en ello. Creo que esta diferencia es la clave para todo.
Shimada. Es que no hemos estado constantemente apurándonos. Cuando hacemos un receso, nos lo tomamos en serio. Y cuando estamos trabajando, realmente trabajamos. Creo que este es nuestro secreto.
C.B. En su opinión personal, ¿cuál es su opinión acerca de la cultura y la música japonesa en todo el mundo actualmente?
H. Es a causa del anime y del manga. Creo que el desarrollo del género anisong es un estilo que sólo se encuentra en Japón.
F. Probablemente porque la cultura japonesa es única y ha sido reconocida por todo el mundo. La influencia del anime japonés, el manga y la cultura kawaii es muy fuerte en la juventud en varios países al igual que la música asociada con ello simultáneamente hace que sea muy popular. Creo que esto es lo mismo hacia nuestra admiración por la cultura musical occidental cuando éramos jóvenes, siendo algo nuevo, especial y emocionante.
S. Porque probablemente hace que sea única la cultura de Japón, al igual que el anime y lo otaku; y esto además lo hace más única ahora con la influencia de la música occidental. Esa es la música japonesa, por eso creo que es muy popular en todo el mundo.
C. B. ¿Por qué decidieron hacer este tributo a los Jackson 5 cantando “I’ll Be There”?
H. Esta canción interpretada por Mineko tiene mucho amor. Es tan maravillosa que yo quería que también todos pudieran oírla.
F. Todo empezó cuando me invitaron a cantar en la banda de un amigo y empecé a cantarla como vocalista invitada. Desde entonces, la he cantado en las bodas de mis amigos, y allí comencé a usarla como cover en los shows en vivo de Popsi. Y a todo el mundo le gustó este tema y nadie se sintió incómodo.
S. A todos los miembros les encanta esta canción.
C.B. ¿Qué tipo de conexión especial han encontrado con sus fans cuando se han presentado en vivo en diversas convenciones de anime en los Estados Unidos?
H. Los fans japoneses son tímidos, pero los que están en el extranjero dan una reacción honesta e inmediata a lo que están oyendo. Siempre nos sentimos poderosos por la actitud positiva de los fans en el extranjero y eso lo valoramos.
F. Nuestros fans en el extranjero suelen expresar abiertamente su pasión. Ellos disfrutan el momento. Son 100% muy diferente a los japoneses, eso nos encanta y se nos facilita mucho para acercarnos a ellos. Todos son muy amables para hablar con nosotros después de cada concierto, y siempre nos daban su honesta opinión. Hay fans que nos dicen que quieren que volvamos y que nuevamente esperan por nosotros. ¡Me siento muy feliz y agradecida por todos ellos!
S. Hemos estado tocando en vivo en los Estados Unidos y en México. Me sentí tan feliz porque el público nos recibió muy apasionadamente. Si hay una oportunidad, me encantaría volver a tocar en vivo de nuevo allá.
C. B. ¿Conocen o han escuchado alguna banda o músico de Latinoamérica? (Si su respuesta es no, ¿qué les gustarían saber de América Latina en cuanto a su música?)
H. ¡El álbum de Los Lobos «Colossal Head» es increíble! En el pasado, hemos remezclado “Ruby” con un estilo de samba.
F. Los Lobos, Caetano Veloso, Moreno, etc. Creo que Popsi puede hacer estilo Bossa Nova.
S. Antonio Carlos Jobim y Los Lobos. Estoy de acuerdo con Mineko, Popsi puede sacar un buen tema en Bossa Nova.
C. B. En la historia de Swinging Popsicle, ¿cuál ha sido el concierto más importante que nunca olvidarán? ¿Por qué?
H. Fue un acústico en vivo en un escenario al aire libre. Se sintió cómo nuestra actuación y nuestras voces se fundían en el cielo. ¡Ese sentimiento fue mágico e inolvidable!
F. Hay tantos que no podría elegir uno en especial pero recuerdo todos los buenos espectáculos en vivo, especialmente en el extranjero. Para el MV de “Flow” principalmente utilizamos los vídeos de nuestras experiencias en el extranjero, allí tenemos muchísimos recuerdos.
S. Un show en vivo desde hace mucho tiempo, un concierto individual en el Shibuya Quatro. Recuerdo muy bien el momento en que Mineko estaba en los hombros de alguien. Y también el espectáculo en vivo en México, realmente fue muy memorable. El público era muy apasionado y todos los fans eran muy amables y cálidos con nosotros. ¡Inolvidable!
C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus planes para este año?
H. Bueno, acabamos de lanzar nuestro mini álbum “Flow”, y esperamos hacer otro mini-álbum en este nuevo año.
C. B. Una vez más, les agradecemos su tiempo para esta entrevista; y para despedirnos me gustaría que enviasen un saludo a nuestro público tanto en Colombia como en Latinoamérica.
H. Estoy tan feliz de saber que la gente está escuchándonos en países que nunca hemos visitado. Me encantaría tener un show en vivo y conocerlos a todos.
F. Visitamos México, pero nunca habíamos estado en Colombia y en otros países de Latinoamérica. ¡Sería muy feliz si se nos diera la oportunidad de tener un show en vivo allá! Por favor, escuchen “Flow”. ¡Gracias!
S. Yo nunca he estado en Colombia, pero me emociono cuando pienso en ello. Espero tener la oportunidad de tener allá un show en vivo. ¡Vayamos juntos a disfrutar de la música de “Flow”!

A newspaper ad caught the eye of several bassists for a new band 20 years ago. When all the auditions are done, Hironobu Hirata was chosen to play the bass with the singer Mineko Fujishima and guitarist Osamu Shimada. This is how Swinging Popsicle has emerged to the Japanese music movement giving a fresh and youthful pop rock sound. Thus, in 1998, Sony Music Entertainment was interested and got their enrollment launching their successful debut self-titled full-length album which several themes such as “Parade” and “Joy of Living” at the Oricon’s chart top.
Korea was their first international live showcase in 2005 due “I Just Wanna Kiss You” was the most popular hit on Japanese tour. In the following year, Swinging Popsicle crossed to the Western side of the world conquering to the United States. Thus, they debuted for the Fanime MusicFest (San Jose, CA), with their song “Clash” which was included in a compilation CD for the Korean anime Cracker. After that, the Japanese trio continued touring America playing at Anime Mid Atlantic (Richmond, VA), and New York Anime Fest, both in 2007. In addition, their music has been widely used to the NITROPLUS PC, a video game company, as SUMAGA (STAR MINE GIRL), and AXANAEL. In 2009, they have released the CD “Loud Cut” with soundtrack remastered versions of some tracks such as “Afterglow” and “Let Me Fly”. In the last age, the group was nominated as Best Japanese Rock Band by former Shojo Beat magazine (out of business).
In 2015, Swinging Popsicle celebrated their 20th anniversary music career releasing the EP “Flow” on December 10th, now available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and Google Play. Therefore, we spoke with them who emotionally remembered the live show in Monterrey, Mexico (March 2008) as their first encounter with Latin American fans.
Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much to attend us in this interview for Colombia and Latin America. Congratulations! My first question is what is your secret to keep in active in this 20 years of your worldwide musical career?
Hirata. Not trying too hard. Taking it easy.
Fujishima. Thank you as well! Basically, going without breaking our pace, I think. We don’t do things in a hurry. But, when we decide to do something, we concentrate! We put all our energy into it. I believe this difference is the key.
Shimada. It’s not that we’ve been running constantly. When we’re on a break, we take a break. And when we’re working, we really work. I think this is the secret.
C. B. In your personal opinion, what is your vision about Japanese culture and music around the world?
H. It’s because of anime and manga. The development of ani-song is a style only found in Japan, I think.
F. Probably because the unique Japanese culture has been recognized all over the world. The influence of Japanese anime, manga, and kawaii culture is really strong on youth in so many countries. And that music associated with that becomes popular at the same time. I believe that this is the same as our admiration of Western musical culture when we were young. It was something fresh, special, and exciting.
S. Like anime and otaku, it’s probably because it’s the unique culture of Japan. With influence from Western music, it’s developed in its unique way. That’s Japanese music, and that’s why it’s popular, I think.
C. B. Why do you have decided to make a tribute to the Jackson 5 with the song “I’ll Be There”?
H. The song performed by our vocalist Mineko Fujishima is filled with love. It’s so wonderful, I wanted everyone to hear it, too.
F. The start was when I was invited to sing with my friend’s band and I sang this song as a guest vocalist. Since then, I have sung it at friends’ weddings, and started to cover it at Popsi live shows. Everyone likes this song, so it didn’t feel awkward or anything.
S. All the members like this song.
C. B. Performing in some AniCons, what kind of special connections do you find out with your fans when you used to play on stage in America?
H. Japanese fans are shy, but overseas fans give an honest reaction right away to the sound they’re hearing. The positive attitude of overseas fans always gives us power and we appreciate it.
F. Overseas fans are used to expressing their passion honestly. They enjoy the moment 100%, much differently than Japanese people, so it gets exciting and it’s easy for us to blend in! Also, everyone was very friendly to talk to us after the show, and gave us their honest feedback. There are fans who tell us that they want us to come back and that they’re waiting for us. I’m very happy and grateful for them!
S. We’ve had live shows in America and Mexico. I was so happy because the audience welcomed us very passionately. If there’s an opportunity, I’d like to go have a live show again.
C. B. Did you know or did you hear any Latin America band or musician? (If your answer is no, what would you like to know of Latin America about your music?)
H. Los Lobos’s album “Colossal Head” is awesome! In the past, we’ve re-mixed the Swinging Popsicle’s song “Ruby” into a samba style.
F. Los Lobos, Caetano Veloso, Moreno, etc. I think Popsi can do Bossa Nova style.
S. Antonio Carlos Jobim and Los Lobos. I agree with Mineko, Popsi can pull off a cool Bossa Nova.
C. B. In the history of the band, what has been the most important concert that you will never forget? Why?
H. It was an acoustic live show on an outdoor stage. It felt like our performance and voice were melting into the sky. That feeling was magical and unforgettable.
F. There are so many that I can’t choose one! But I remember all of the overseas live shows especially well! For the MV of “Flow,” we mainly use videos from our overseas experiences. We have so many memories there.
S. A live show from a long time ago, the one-man show at Shibuya Quatro. I remember really well the moment when Mineko was on someone’s shoulders. The live in Mexico was really memorable, too. The audience was passionate, and all the fans were friendly and warm. Unforgettable!
C. B. What plans do you have this year?
H. We’ve just released our mini album “Flow”, and we hope to make another mini album within the year.
C. B. Again, thank you very much for this interview and I would like you send a greeting to our audience in Colombia and Latin America.
H. I’m so happy to know that people listen to our music in countries we’ve never visited. I would love to have a live show and meet you all.
F. We’ve visited Mexico, but never been to Colombia and other Latin American countries. I would be happy if we were given an opportunity to have a live show there! Please listen to “Flow”
