La ciudad de Taipéi, un lugar de diferentes contrastes, con varios museos, parques, templos y sus imponentes rascacielos. Una banda donde nos encontramos con una música relajada, aires de romanticismo y vibraciones nostálgicas. – We have talked with The Chairs from Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan, a contrast place enriched with museums, parks, temples, and their amazing skyscrapers. Thus, the band showed us a sound teaser made with relaxed music, romantic air, and nostalgic vibes.

Por primera vez, las ondas de Bunka Wave llegan hasta la isla de Taiwán; sus diversos paisajes, su riqueza cultural y su creciente escena musical han puesto a este país en el radar de varios mercados especializados; actualmente descubrimos y conocemos a una generación de artistas llenos de talento para nuestra audiencia en América Latina.

Vale resaltar, que a pesar de la pandemia mundial que estamos viviendo, en el marco de la edición virtual del festival SXSW 2021 la organización Taiwan Beats presentó a los artistas Enno Cheng, Fire EX., NekoJam y, por supuesto, a The Chairs, con excelentes impresiones por parte los seguidores de este emblemático evento. Una sesión donde también se destacan como escenario las grandes montañas, una fábrica de manufacturas, una pescadería de camarones y un impresionante templo de colores. The Chairs, formados por Yun Jing (voz & guitarra), Zhong Ying (voz & guitarra) y Benson (bajo) desde el 2015, han sido nominados a múltiples premios en los Golden Indie Music Awards (GIMA). En el 2018, se reunieron con el productor Eazie Huang, conocido por trabajar con artistas de la nueva generación musical taiwanesa. Pronto, congeniaron y juntos crearon el flamante álbum “Lovely Sunday”. Con un álbum un poco romántico, ácido, retro y un poco travieso, The Chairs obtuvo por segunda vez la nominación de GIMA al premio al mejor sencillo folk y recibió el premio al mejor grupo del Golden Melody Award 30th. En 2020 la banda lanzó su tercer álbum «Real Love Is…».

Ahora con miras a seguir conquistando audiencias en Occidente, dialogamos con su frontman Yun Jing en esta primera entrevista para Latinoamérica a manera de un primer coqueteo musical. Los invitamos a que lean nuestra amena conversación.

B.W. ¿Cómo se conocieron para tocar juntos?

Jing (voz & guitarra). Nos conocíamos desde el instituto. Nos unimos al club de guitarra como actividad extraescolar, empezamos a aprender a tocar el instrumento y fuimos invitados a un mundo musical diferente. Mientras otros chicos escuchaban los éxitos del mandopop (variedad de música popular en países como China y Taiwán) y grupos como Girls’ Generation, One OK Rock o Linkin Park, nosotros nos enamoramos de alguna manera de los oldies como The Beatles, Eagles o The Ventures.

Por aquel entonces yo había empezado a escribir un par de canciones, así que nos reunimos y tratamos de arreglarlas. No sabíamos mucho de nada, sólo éramos un grupo de frikis de la guitarra acústica, pero fue muy divertido.

B.W. ¿Qué los inspira para componer y tocar su música?

J. No lo sé, John Mayer, supongo; me parece tan estupendo mientras toca la guitarra y canta piezas suyas. La otra razón es que creo que es genial escribir cosas que suenen diferentes a las del mercado en general. Por supuesto, el mercado se está llenando de color como veo. Pero todo comenzó con este tipo de pensamiento.

B.W. ¿Cuál es su visión de la escena indie taiwanesa en el mundo en la actualidad?

J. Bueno, realmente no sabemos cómo nos vemos ante los ojos de la gente de otras regiones, pero notamos que bandas como Sunset Rollercoaster y Elephant Gym reciben atención en todo el mundo es sin duda emocionante. Fuera de nuestras expectativas, nuestra música se está escuchando también en Japón, Corea del Sur, Vietnam y lugares del otro hemisferio como Francia, ¡increíble! Aunque la mayoría de nuestras canciones están escritas en mandarín, la Internet es un milagro.

Agradecemos de verdad todo el amor que recibimos del mundo. Me gusta la letra que escribió Lorde,»Vivimos en ciudades que nunca verás en pantalla / no son muy bonitas, pero seguro que sabemos cómo dirigir las cosas». Tenemos artistas versátiles en nuestra escena musical, y te aseguro que no te arrepentirás de haberlos descubierto.

B.W. La banda participó en el SXSW online 2021. ¿Cómo fue su experiencia tocando en una pesquería de camarones?

J. Fue increíble. Aunque hay muchas pescaderías de gambas en Taiwán, era la primera vez que estábamos en una. Un dato curioso es que el dueño trasladó las gambas a la piscina de la otra sala de la pescadería con antelación, porque nos dijo que se morirían de miedo si oían el ritmo de los tambores. ¡Qué pena que se perdieran la fiesta!

B.W ¿Conocen algún grupo o músico latinoamericano?

J. Joao Gilberto es uno de los mejores y más inspiradores músicos brasileños de todos los tiempos. Lo queremos mucho. También tocamos algunas obras de Santana y canciones como La Bamba cuando aprendíamos a tocar la guitarra. En cuanto a los grupos, sólo conocemos bandas de Estados Unidos que tienen elementos latinos en su música, como The Marías y Divino Niño. La música latina tiene un ritmo fascinante y un ambiente relajado que nos gusta mucho. Nos encantaría aprender más de la hermosa música que hacen.

B.W. ¿Cuál es el concierto más importante que nunca olvidas? ¿Por qué?

J. Si la Audiotree Live Session pudiera contarse como uno, sería éste. Estábamos planeando una gira por ciudades de Estados Unidos durante el SXSW 2020, pero desgraciadamente estalló la pandemia y se cancelaron todos los conciertos. No fue nada fácil, ya que temíamos que el virus afectara a nuestro vuelo de vuelta a casa, y lo que es más grave, no sabíamos si nuestro equipo sobreviviría al año siguiente. Audiotree fue el único milagro alegre que ocurrió. Fue un recuerdo realmente inolvidable tocar sólo una toma, y ¡bang! nuestra música llegó al público de Estados Unidos y del mundo. Fue un debut en muchos sentidos. Utilizar nuestra música para entablar amistad con personas de idiomas, culturas y orígenes diferentes, nos parece un sueño hecho realidad.

B.W. ¿Qué planes tienen para este año?

J. Lanzaremos nuevos singles. El primero saldrá quizá a finales de abril. En otoño saldrá un nuevo álbum. Esperemos que la pandemia termine pronto para poder empezar a hacer giras a más lugares del mundo para compartir nuestra música.

B.W. ¿Qué proyectos musicales taiwaneses nos pueden recomendar?

J. Simple Life Festival, MegaPort Festival y Spring Scream son marcas icónicas de festivales musicales en Taiwán, y en realidad hay varios festivales más pequeños que presentan diferentes dimensiones de la cultura local y que florecen por todas partes en la isla cada año. En cuanto a las salas, Legacy, Zepp y Live Warehouse son grandes lugares donde se celebran muchos conciertos. Uno de mis festivales y foros musicales favoritos es el LUC Fest de Tainan. Se puede explorar la ciudad histórica mientras se experimenta la buena comida y la gente cuando se va de un escenario a otro, de un local a otro y de un bar a otro.

B.W. ¿Podrían dejar un mensaje para nuestra audiencia en América Latina?

J. ¡Hola Bunka Wave! Encantados de conocerlos. Estamos muy contentos y es un privilegio compartir nuestras historias con ustedes. Acabamos de lanzar nuestro último álbum «Real Love Is…», nuestro tercer álbum y es probablemente el más significativo. Es como una poesía; plasmamos fragmentos cotidianos, tratando de descifrar las cosas más importantes en esta etapa de la vida y la gran imagen del universo. Espero que lo disfruten. For the first time, Bunka Wave has reached the island of Taiwan. Its diverse landscapes, its cultural richness, and its growing music scene have put this country in the view of several musical markets. We just discovered and met a generation of talented artists for our audience in Latin America. Despite the global pandemic we are living in, Taiwan Beats introduced several artists such as Enno Cheng, Fire EX., NekoJam, and, of course, The Chairs with a great impression in the framework of the SXSW 2021 festival virtual version, on behalf of the followers of this emblematic event. Moreover, this music online session was great showing up a beautiful Taiwanese background, the great mountains, a manufacturing factory, a shrimp fishmonger, and an impressive colorful temple. The Chairs are Yun Jing (v & g), Zhong Ying (v & g), and Benson (b) since his inceptions in 2015. The band has been nominated for multiple awards at the Golden Indie Music Awards (GIMA). In 2018, they met with Eazie Huang, best known as the producer of the Taiwanese new generation artists. Soon, they worked together to create the awesome new latest album “Lovely Sunday”, a little bit romantic, acid, retro, and mischievous, mixing in each track. For the second time, The Chairs were nominated to the GIMA awards as the Best Folk Single and won as the Best Group in the 30th Golden Melody Awards. In 2020 the band released their third album «Real Love Is …»

As a polite way to conquer Western audiences, we spoke with the frontman, Yun Jing, in his first interview for Latin America as a first attempt to captive us. We encourage you to read our cool conversation.

B.W. How did you meet to play together?

Jing (Vocal/Guitarist): We knew each other since high school. We joined the guitar club as an extracurricular activity, started learning how to play the instrument, and were invited to a different world of music. While other kids were listening to mandopop hits, and groups like Girls’ Generation, One OK Rock, or Linkin Park, we somehow fell in love with oldies like The Beatles, Eagles, The Ventures, Jim Corce, all that jazz. At the time I had started writing a couple of songs, so we got together and tried to arrange them. We didn’t know much about anything you know, just a group of acoustic guitar geeks, but it was a lot of fun.

B.W. What inspires you to compose and play music?

J. I don’t know, John Mayer, I guess. He just looks so cool while he’s playing the guitar and sings pieces of his own. The other reason is that I think it’s kind of cool writing things that sounds different from those in the mainstream market. Of course, the market is getting colorful as I see. But it all started with this kind of thought (or bias).

B.W What is your vision about the Taiwanese Indie music scene around the world in the present day?

J. Well, we really don’t know how we look like in the eyes of people from other regions in the world, but noticing that bands like Sunset Rollercoaster and Elephant Gym getting attention worldwide is surely an excitement. Out of our expectations, our music is also being heard in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and places from the other hemisphere (like France!) even though most of our songs are written in Mandarin! The Internet is a miracle. We truly appreciate all the love we receive from the world. I like the lyrics Lorde wrote: “We live in cities you’ll never see on-screen / Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things.” We have versatile artists in our music scene, and you wouldn’t regret digging it.

B.W The band participated in SXSW online 2021. What was your experience playing in a shrimp fishery?

J. It was amazing! Though there are many shrimp fisheries in Taiwan, it was our first time to be in one. A fun fact is that the owner transfers the shrimps to the pool in the other room of the fishery in advance because he said they’d be scared to death if they hear the beat of the drums! So sad they missed the party.

B.W. Do you know any Latin American bands or musicians? If not, what would you like to learn about music in Latin America?

J. Joao Gilberto is one of the greatest and most inspiring Brazilian musicians of all time. We love him very much. We also played some works from Santana and songs like La Bamba when we were learning the guitar. As for bands, we’re only familiar with bands from the US that have Latino elements in their music, like The Marías and Divino Niño. Latino music got that fascinating rhythmic groove and laid-back vibe that we really like. We’d love to learn more from the beautiful music you make.

B.W. What is the most important concert that you never forget? Why?

J. If Audiotree Live Session could be counted as one then this would be it. We were planning on a tour over cities in the US during SXSW 2020, but unfortunately, the pandemic broke out and all shows were canceled. It was really not easy since we feared the virus would affect our flight back home, and what’s more serious is that we didn’t know if our team would survive the following year. Audiotree was the only cheerful miracle that happened. It was a really unforgettable memory to play just one take, and bang! Our music delivered to the audience in America and the world. It was a debut in many ways. Using our music to make friends with people with different languages, cultures, and backgrounds, sounds like dream come true to us.

B.W. What are your plans for this year?

J. We will release new singles, the first one will release perhaps by the end of April. By Fall there will be a new album coming out. Hopefully, the pandemic would end soon, so we could start to go on tour to more places around the world to share our music.

B.W. What Taiwanese musical projects do you recommend?

J: Simple Life Festival, MegaPort Festival, and Spring Scream are iconic music festival brands in Taiwan, and actually there are hundreds more other smaller festivals featuring different dimensions of local culture blooming everywhere in the island annually. As for venues, Legacy, Zepp, and Live Warehouse are great places where many concerts take place. One of my favorite music festivals and forum is LUC Fest in Tainan. You can explore the historic town while experiencing the great food and people when shuttling between stages, venues, and bars.

B.W. Could you please leave a message for all our audience?

J. Hello Bunka Wave! Nice to meet you. We’re really glad and it’s such a privilege to share our stories with you. We just released our latest album “Real Love Is…”, our third album and is probably the most significant one. It’s like poetry, we captured daily fragments, trying to figure out the most important things in this stage of life and the great picture of the universe. Hope you enjoy it.
