Thai singer-songwriter Cupnoodle has announced that she is working on a new EP titled YUM ยำ, and has shown a glimpse of what’s to come with the first single ‘Piece of Mind’. The first single of the upcoming EP, ‘Piece of Mind’, is a bedroom pop, early 2000s R&B track with a slice of drum and bass influence. The song explores emotional and mental well-being, and highlights the importance of mental peace over perfection through candid lyrics and witty melodies.
After ‘Piece of Mind’, Cupnoodle plans to release the next single in 6 weeks time, building up further hype for the EP. Titled YUM ยำ, the EP name is a reference to the Cupnoodle’s own food-related artist name, and also represents the Thai word for “mix”, reflecting the blended pop sounds that listeners can expect to catch in the EP.
“This single sets the tone for how blended and innovative the sound of pop of this EP will be, a mixture of R&B, Pop, Electronic and throwbacks to vintage sounds, but with each song serving a very different flavor,” said Cupnoodle.
“With this EP, YUM ยำ represents the musical influences and flavors of Cupnoodle without any fuss.” In the first verse of ‘Piece of Mind’, Cupnoodle is seeking a partner who offers stability and genuine support, leading into the pre-chorus, which reflects on past struggles with societal expectations, describing the experience as “boxes that turn me into its hostage”.
Transitioning into the chorus, which is the song’s anthem, there is an emphasis on the essential need for a peace of mind with lines like “I don’t want nobody living rent free in my mind” and “I don’t have that kind of money to be wasting time”. This illustrates a conscious decision to prioritize mental health and personal well-being over external validation and unnecessary drama.
Moving into the second verse, Cupnoodle embraces imperfections and self-acceptance, and begins to seek authentic connections. The lyrics “Trust me I know I’m no angel” and “Not asking for perfect people”, reinforcing the theme of embracing one’s true self and seeking authentic connections. ‘Piece of Mind’ is a testament to Cupnoodle’s lyrical wittiness and ability to connect with audiences on a profound levels through a relatable topic, and a reminder that amidst the chaos of modern life, achieving a peace of mind is priceless and inevitable pursuit.
