Sorprendentemente, TsuShiMaMiRe regresa a los Estados Unidos para celebrar los 20 años del Japan Nite tanto en el SXSW como en la gira, en la que dialogamos sobre sus expectativas, su secreto para seguir tocando y su primer contacto con el mambo latinoamericano. – Surprisingly, TsuShiMaMiRe returns to celebrate together Japan Nite’s 20th Anniversary playing at SXSW and US Tour as well; we spoke out their expectations, their secret to keep playing songs, and their first encounter with Latin mambo music.

El Japan Nite, como habíamos mencionado antes, cumple dos décadas este año. Y para esta nueva edición, una de las bandas más esperadas por sus fans en los Estados Unidos fue pionera en la primera versión de este evento: TsuShiMaMiRe. Era el SXSW del 2004 y junto a Mari (guitarras y voz), Yayoi (bajo) y la baterista Mizue, estaban Noodles, Petty Booka, Bleach y Kokeshi Doll, quienes recorrieron no sólo las tarimas del festival texano sino gran parte de las ciudades norteamericanas (Chicago, Nueva York, Seattle, Boston, Los Ángeles y San Francisco) acompañadas por The Pillows en el 2005 iniciándose así el Japan Nite US Tour; era la primera gira internacional de este talentoso trío quienes se conocieron cuando eran estudiantes universitarias en Tokio en 1999; TsuShiMaMiRe empezó a emerger como una gran revelación musical que enamoró a sus seguidores con su estridente punk rock con elementos sonoros de avant garde, ska, y surf, los cuales le sirvieron para consolidar aún más su presencia mundial al grabar un EP dedicatorio para la famosa serie de televisión animada Las Chicas Superpoderosas (Cartoon Network) en el 2008.
Curiosamente, el nombre de la banda no es japonés aunque pareciera serlo; es una extraña combinación de abreviaciones de los nombres y apellidos de sus integrantes: Tsushima es el apellido de la bajista, Ma es el nombre abreviado de Mari y la abreviatura Mi de Mizue. Pero la palabra mamire significa ‘mezclado o revuelto” en japonés, por lo que esta divertida jerigonza significa: “Tsushima (Yayoi), Mari y Mizu están juntas y revueltas.”
Hoy, la banda regresa por la puerta grande a los Estados Unidos, y muchas cosas han cambiado desde entonces. Sin embargo, ellas se mantienen unidas tocando, componiendo y deleitando nuestros oídos y nuestros corazones sin importar el idioma; TsuShiMaMiRe cuenta en su haber con 10 álbumes de estudio como Pregnant Fantasy, Sex on the Beach, Noumiso Shortcake, o su más reciente, Mamire (‘Best of’ Compilation Disc), entre otros; su propio sello disquero: Mojor Records, fundado en 2009; 5 Live DVDs; muchos video-clips emitidos en Youtube; 4 demos; y una serie de singles exitosos, los cuales fueron premiadas en el 2007 como el Mejor Grupo Femenino por la revista estadounidense Shojo Beat USA.
A sabiendas de que este nuevo regreso al país de las estrellas y las barras es inminentemente enloquecedor para sus amados fans, la banda tiene una gran expectativa de lo que será este reencuentro sin desconocer el gran peso histórico que lleva a cuestas. Por ello, se han preparado muy bien para este Japan Nite, en el que podrá revisar su itinerario. Desde Japón, conversamos con Mari, quien además nos comentó su primer encuentro con la música latinoamericana durante su infancia y su sueño de conocer nuestra región, considerada la Tierra Prometida para los músicos asiáticos.
Colectivo Bunka. Muchas gracias por aceptarnos esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica. Estamos muy contentos de que ustedes volvieran a tocar en el Japan Nite este año. ¿Cómo ha cambiado la banda desde el 2004 hasta ahora? ¿Qué nueva actitud o estilo musical prometerán para la gran gira del Japan Nite 2015?
Mari. Muchas gracias. La banda siempre se mantiene en constante desarrollo. Durante este Japan Nite Tour, me gustaría mostrar el poder de TsuShiMaMiRe permaneciendo con sus mismos miembros unidos por más de 15 años. Estamos listas para dar un ritmo apretado, una fresca e innovadora música y la cálida energía en vivo que sólo esta banda puede contagiar. TsuShiMaMiRe ha lanzado 10 álbumes hasta la fecha ya que el primero fue lanzado en el 2004. Después de nuestro gran debut en 2007, nos independizamos y empezamos a fundar Mojor Records en el 2009. Como la palabra japonesa Mo viene después de Me [Ma-mi-mu-me-mo], lo nombramos Mojor Records para ir un paso adelante de me-jor (‘mayor’ en japonés). El año pasado lanzamos el mejor álbum: “TsuShiMaMiRe MaMiRe” para celebrar el 15º aniversario de la banda, siendo un capítulo final para nosotras. Ahora nos encontramos en nuestro 16º año y todavía estamos explorando nueva música para componer mucho más. Así que por favor, mantengan sus miradas en nosotras. ¡Y vayamos todos a gozar!
C. B.Sus fans las catalogan como una “banda de punk de chicas japonesas”. ¿Estás de acuerdo con eso?
M. Creo que en parte coinciden. A veces, he tenido esa creencia cuando veo los videos de nuestros shows en vivo: “¿Somos punk?” Es como si estuviéramos locos haciendo fuertes sonidos, gritos y rugidos salvajes. Pero por otro lado, hemos querido mostrar el lado más profundo de nuestra música. Recientemente, algunas personas nos han etiquetado como “punk neoyorquino” o “banda de new wave”, pero cuando nos nombran como “alternativos” me siento mucho mejor. Personalmente, añoro un tipo de sonido loco pero sensible similar a lo que hacía Television y Velvet Underground. Así que, ¡llámennos como quieran! Estoy ansiosa por saber cómo seremos etiquetadas en esta gira por parte de la gente y la prensa.
C. B. ¿Cuál es su secreto para seguir juntas tocando en vivo y componiendo nuevas canciones por más de 15 años?
M. Quizás sigo componiendo canciones porque nunca puedo pensar que ya hemos alcanzado nuestra meta por completo. Quiero ser mucho más chévere y cantar mucho más desde mi corazón. Todavía sigo siendo muy inmadura, por lo que no puedo retirarme. Además, la energía y la alegría que siento cuando tres de nosotras crea música siempre me hacen sentir que “soy muy feliz de estar viva y ser parte de una banda.” Esta alegría es incomparable, no la sentirás en ningún otro lugar. Y tal vez continúo haciendo conciertos en vivo porque quiero seguir compartiendo esta gran alegría con todo el mundo.
C. B. ¿Alguna vez has escuchado algún ritmo latinoamericano? Por favor, cuéntanos qué artistas conoces o qué deseas aprender sobre la música latina.
M. Cuando era niña, mis padres siempre escuchaba Mambo No. 5 en acetato o LP [N. del T.: se refiere a la música original producida y compuesta por Dámaso Pérez Prado en 1950.] Muchas veces gritaba cuando oía esa voz diciendo “¡Uh Ja!” (Risas). Me encanta ese disco de vinilo y aún lo conservo como un tesoro. También me gusta la Bossa Nova; la música latina logra que mi cuerpo se mueva y sin importar qué, me dan ganas de bailar, ¡eso me alegra mucho! ¡Quiero aprender este poder que hace feliz a la gente!
C. B. ¿Qué esperas de tus fans en el SXSW este año?
M. Si logramos impresionar tanto a los nuevos como a los viejos fans de la banda, estaría muy contenta. Queremos ofrecerles la mejor música y el mejor baile y gritar juntos ¡Kanpai! ¡TsuShiMaMiRe adora el público estadounidense, las salas de conciertos y un par de buenas bebidas!
C. B. Después de esta gira por los EE.UU., ¿qué planes tienen para este año?
M. Para este año, vamos a lanzar un nuevo álbum e irnos de gira por Japón. Estaría encantada de volver nuevamente a los Estados Unidos y me gustaría visitar otros países. ¡Especialmente Latinoamérica! Si hay una oportunidad, ¡sin duda volveremos!

For this year, Japan Nite (as we have posted before) got two decades. For this new musical event, one of the most anticipated bands for their American fans was pioneer for the first Japan Nite version: TsuShiMaMiRe. SXSW 2004. Mari (guitars & vocals), Yayoi (bass) and drummer Mizue, along Noodles, Petty Booka, Bleach, and Kokeshi Doll, played together for this Texan festival; next year, these bands and The Pillows as well have toured some American cities (Chicago, New York, Seattle, Boston, Los Angeles, & San Francisco). Japan Nite US Tour was born! Thus, it was their first international tour for this talented trio who met when were college students in Tokyo in 1999; TsuShiMaMiRe began to disclose as a great musical revelation that captivated a lot of fans with her strident punk rock along a pinch of avant garde, ska and surf sounds. In 2008, the band got consolidate their worldwide presence when released Six Mix Girls, a tribute EP for the popular cartoon television series The Powerpuff Girls (Cartoon Network).
As a curious trivia, the name of the band is not Japanese but it seems to be; it is a rarely combination of names and last names abbreviated from their members: Tsushima is the bassist’s last name, Ma is Mari’s short name, and Mi is Mizue’s name abbreviated. The Japanese word mamire means ‘mixed up’, so this funny gibberish means “Tsushima (Yayoi), Mari and Mizue all mixed together.”
Today, the band returns to the US through the main gate, many things have changed since their last show. However, they are keeping united playing, composing, and delighting our ears and our hearts regardless language; TsuShiMaMiRe has produced 10 studio albums (Pregnant Fantasy, Sex on the Beach, Noumiso Shortcake, or her newest, Mamire (‘Best of’ Compilation Disc), among others); her own record label: Mojor Records, established in 2009; 5 Live DVDs; several MV on Youtube ; 4 demos; and many successful singles. The band was awarded in 2007 as Best All-Girl Group by Shojo Beat magazine USA.
Knowing that this new return to the Land of Stars and Stripes will become an awesome madness from her beloved fans, the girls keep a great expectation about this reunion without ignoring the great historical weight piggybacking. Therefore, they are very well ready touring this Japan Nite, where you can review her live schedule. From Japan, we spoke with Mari, who also told us about her first encounter with Latin American music during her childhood and her dream to tour our region, considered as the Promised Land for many Asian artists.
Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much for doing this interview for Colombia and Latin America. We’re happy that you will play in Japan Nite again. How has your band changed since 2004 to now? What new style or attitude do you have for the 2015 Japan Nite tour?
Mari. The band keeps developing. During this year’s Japan Nite Tour, I would like to show the power of TsuShiMaMiRe staying together over 15 years with the same members. We’re ready to deliver the tight groove, creative & cool music, and hot energy that only this band can create. TsuShiMaMiRe has released 10 albums so far since the 1st album in 2004 was released. After major-debuting in 2007, we became independent and started “Mojor Records” in 2009. As Mo comes after Me in Japanese (Ma-mi-mu-me-mo) we named it “Mojor Records” so we can go a step ahead of “me-jor” (major). Last year, we released the best album “TsuShiMaMiRe MaMiRe” to celebrate the band’s 15 year anniversary, and it was an end of a chapter. The band is in our 16th year, and we’re still searching for new music to develop even more. Please keep your eyes on us. Let’s dance together!
C. B. Fans call you a «Japanese Girl Punk Band.» Do you agree with that title?
M. I think it fits in a certain part. I’ve had the thought sometimes, «Are we punk?» when I see our live show videos. It’s like that when we’re going crazy and making roaring sounds, shouting, and going wild. On the other hand, I’ve wanted to show the deeper side of our music. Recently some people call us “New York Punk” or “new wave”, but I always feel right when they call us Alternative. Personally, now I yearn for a sensitive type of crazy like I’ve seen in Television and Velvet Underground. Please call us whatever you like! I’m curious what we’ll be called on the next tour!
C. B. What is your secret to keep playing live and composing new songs together for over 15 years?
M. Maybe I keep composing songs because I can never think we’ve achieved our complete shape. I want to become cooler and I want to sing more from my heart. I’m still very immature, so I can’t stop. Also, the energy and joy that I feel when three of us create music always make me feel «I’m happy to be alive and to be in a band!» This joy can never be felt anywhere else. And maybe I keep having live shows because I want to share this joy with the world.
C. B. Have you ever heard any Latin American music? Please tell us what musicians you know or what you want to learn about Latin music?
M. When I was a child, my parents always listened to Mambo No. 5 on vinyl record. I often cried when I heard the voice: “Ha-! Ooh!” (LOL). But I love that vinyl record and I still cherish it. I like Bossa-Nova, too. Latin music makes my body move and makes me want to dance no matter what, and it makes me happy! I want to learn this power that makes people happy!
C. B. What behavior do you expect from your American fans at SXSW this year?
M. I’d be happy if both old fans and new people would be impressed. I want to deliver the best music, and dance and make Kanpai together! TsuShiMaMiRe loves American audiences, live houses, and good booze!
C. B. After this US Tour, what plans do you have this year?
M. We will release an album and tour Japan this year. I’d be glad to go to America again, and I’d like to tour other countries. Especially, I want to go to Latin America!!! If there’s a chance, I will definitely go!
