Desde Seúl y días antes de su gran debut en la tarima del SXSW, dialogamos con Victim Mentality, una de las bandas que está liderando el renacer del Glam Metal en su país. – From Seoul and days before his awesome debut on SXSW stage, we spoke with Victim Mentality, one of the bands that is leading the rebirth of Glam Metal in his country.

Todo el mundo referencia a Corea del Sur por su gran industria musical del pop. Sin embargo, es muy interesante conocer grupos y artistas que no están en esta corriente musical. Anteriormente ya habíamos realizado una entrevista a una banda catalogada en el Gothic y quien participó en el proyecto musical U.S.B. Compilation Disc Vol. 3 como embajadores de su país: Ishtar. Luego, nos maravillamos mucho más al conocer y entrevistar aquellos músicos que están liderando el movimiento Indie y Electro, algunos de ellos presentándose con rotundo éxito en famosos festivales internacionales: Galaxy Express, Dead Buttons, Asian Chairshot, Love X Stereo… Por esa razón, la sorpresa que nos dio Victim Mentality al aceptar nuestra entrevista y de paso contarnos sus expectativas en su ansiado debut en una tarima internacional tan exigente como en SXSW nos llena de orgullo al conocer que este país asiático también tiene sus espacios musicales para este tipo de música; solamente teníamos que profundizar aún más para oírla.
Dos amigos talentosos y veteranos de la escena metalera surcoreana, Krocodile (voz) y Kyungho Sohn (guitarra), se habían conocido en el 2005 en algún rincón de Seúl. En esa época, Sohn tocaba para dos grupos: The Crescents (Melodic Death Metal) y Dark Mirror ov Tragedy (Symphonic Black Metal). No obstante, ambos tenían ese gran sueño de poder retomar y empoderar uno de los géneros que marcó la historia del metal y del rock en la década de los ochentas: el Glam Metal. Atraído por las influencias musicales, ambos fundan Victim Mentality en el 2009; desde entonces, ellos surcan estas nostálgicas melodías convirtiéndose en la única embajadora de este género en su país.
En el 2013, llamó la atención de este proyecto musical al bajista Scorpion, ingresando oficialmente a la banda. Ese mismo año, su EP “Magic Finger” es lanzado recibiendo elogios ya que, sin un baterista oficial, la banda produjo este EP usando una batería electrónica. Por esta recursiva manera y sin perder la calidad en su concepto sonoro Glam no sólo atrajo nuevos seguidores sino además a su actual baterista, Tarantula (Febrero de 2014), y a la misma industria musical de su país. De hecho, la banda fue invitada para tocar en vivo en dos de los principales festivales: Seoul’s Green Plugged Festival y el Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, consolidándose como un grupo que convoca masivamente a rockear.
Ahora, Victim Mentality está haciendo historia. Primero, su gran y ansiado debut en el extranjero al ser invitados para el SXSW; y segundo, lanzarán finalizando este mes su primer álbum de estudio: “Heavy Metal Is Back”. La emoción, la ansiedad, la gran responsabilidad pero las ganas de rockear en lo que ellos mismos consideran a los Estados Unidos como la “cuna del Glam Metal” marcaron este ameno diálogo con su guitarrista, en el que conocen muy bien las bandas representativas de la escena metalera latinoamericana anhelando rockear y sentir la energía de los fans metaleros latinos en un futuro.
Colectivo Bunka. Muchas gracias por hacer esta entrevista con nosotros para Colombia y Latinoamérica. ¿Cómo se conocieron? ¿Por qué querían hacer Victim Mentality?
Kyungho Sohn. Muchas gracias por tomarse el tiempo para hablar con nosotros. Krocodile y yo crecimos juntos amando el Heavy Metal. Nos hicimos amigos en el 2005 y unos años más tarde queríamos hacer una banda juntos para compartir nuestro amor por el Heavy con otras personas. Cuando empezamos Victim Mentality intentamos sonar como las bandas clásicas, como Judas Priest y Iron Maiden. Pero después, decidimos cambiar nuestro estilo y en lugar de ello nos convertimos en una banda de Glam Metal.
C. B. ¿Quiénes son sus mayores influencias musicales?
K. S. Como he dicho antes, escuchamos muchas bandas de Heavy Clásico que nos gustan como Iron Maiden y Judas Priest. También nos gustan las bandas de Glam como Mötley Crüe. Personalmente, soy un gran fanático del metal extremo ya que escucho mucho Black Metal como Cradle of Filth y Emperor.
C. B. ¿Qué temas inspiran a la banda para componer y tocar sus canciones?
K. S. Nos inspiramos en situaciones de nuestra vida cotidiana para componer las canciones. Muchas de las cosas que hablamos se centran en el amor y en el sexo que la gente de nuestra edad realmente experimenta. Utilizamos historias reales como inspiración para nuestra música.
C. B. Ya hemos aprendido un poco sobre la escena del metal de Corea del Sur, cuando entrevistamos a Ishtar en el 2012. En tu opinión personal, ¿cómo está actualmente la escena del metal?
K. S. Está muy débil. Si bien el número de bandas en Corea del Sur ha ido aumentando, sólo un puñado de ellos toca Metal. Y de esas bandas que lo tocan, están divididas en diferentes subgéneros como el Thrash, el Death, etc. Esa es la razón por la que Victim Mentality desea mostrar el Heavy Metal a mucha gente. Nuestra música es amena y cargada de mucha energía, por lo que creo que es una buena forma de atraer y presentar a muchas más personas al fantástico mundo del Heavy Metal.
C. B. Este año, ustedes harán su debut internacional en uno de los festivales más famosos del mundo: el SXSW. ¿Cuáles son sus expectativas sobre el público estadounidense y qué nuevas canciones van a estar tocando en el festival?
K. S. Estamos muy ansiosos de tocar en el SXSW y muy felices de que nuestros primeros conciertos en el extranjero tendrán lugar en los EE.UU., ¡porque es allí donde surgió el Glam Metal! En el SXSW, nuestro set-list está conformado por temas de nuestro nuevo álbum “Heavy Metal Is Back.” Tenemos mucha curiosidad por ver cómo la gente reaccionará a nuestra música. Creo que cualquier persona que sea un fan del metal de los 80 le encantará nuestro show sin dudarlo.
C. B. ¿Conoces alguna banda o músico de Latinoamérica? Si no, ¿qué te gustaría aprender sobre la música latina?
K. S. Conozco a Sepultura, Soulfly, Sarcófago, y Massacration. ¡Me encanta Massacration, son del pu***! Y también he oído a Angra y otras bandas. En estos días, he escuchado que hay muchísimas agrupaciones jóvenes de Thrash Metal en América Latina. Si alguna vez tengo la oportunidad de ir allá, me encantaría conocer esas bandas.
C. B. ¿Qué bandas o músicos surcoreanos nos recomiendan para que la gente los conozca?
K. S. Si te gusta la calidad sórdida del Glam como Victim Mentality, échale un vistazo a The Hysterics. Si estás en el Thrash, conoce a Crash y a Method. Los que son fans del MetalCore deberían oir a Remnants of the Fallen.
C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus planes después de SXSW 2015?
K. S. Vamos a estar realizando muchos conciertos promocionando nuestro álbum “Heavy Metal Is Back”, cuyo lanzamiento está previsto a finales de este mes de marzo. Estamos muy emocionados de que la gente lo escuche.
C. B. Una vez más, muchas gracias por esta entrevista. ¿Podrías enviar un saludo a nuestros lectores en Colombia y Latinoamérica, por favor?

Everybody knows Korea for a great pop music industry. In spite of, it is very interesting to learn about bands that are not part of the mainstream. Previously, we did our first interview with a Korean gothic metal band, who participated in our USB Disc Compilation Vol 3rd as an ambassador of the country: Ishtar. Since then, we have met and interviewed musicians who are leading Korean indie and electro music scenes, some of them appearing with great success on famous international stages: Galaxy Express, Dead Buttons, Asian Chairshot, Love X Stereo… For that reason, we were surprised when Victim Mentality agreed to be interviewed and told us their expectations for their long-awaited international debut this month at SXSW; this fills us with pride as we know that this Asian country has many musical highlights to show us. You just have to dive deeper past the K-pop surface to hear them.
Two talented friends and Korean metal scene veterans, Krocodile (v) and Kyungho Sohn (g), first met in 2005 somewhere in Seoul. Sohn used to play in the The Crescents (melodic death metal), and since 2007 has played in Dark Mirror ov Tragedy (symphonic black metal). However, he and Krocodile had a dream to bring back and empower one of the genres that marked the history of ‘80s metal and rock: glam metal. Using these musical influences, Victim Mentality (VM) was founded in 2009. Since then, they have created nostalgic tunes becoming the only ambassador of the genre in the country.
In 2013, bassist Scorpion joined the band officially. That same year, the band’s «Magic Finger» EP was released and received praise; the band produced this EP using a drum machine, because they didn’t have an official drummer yet. Being able to do this without affecting the quality of their glam metal sound showed the band’s strength and captured the attention of fans and the music industry in their country as well. They found their current drummer, Tarantula, in February 2014. Last year, VM was also invited to perform live for two major festivals: Seoul’s Green Plugged festival and the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival.
Now, VM is making history! First, is their great and long-awaited debut abroad to perform at SXSW; and second, they will release their full-length album studio “Heavy Metal Is Back” at the end of March. We spoke with the band’s guitarist about these things. And he also told us about the well-known Latin metal bands he has listened to and how he wishes to experience the energy of the Latin metal scene and its fans in the future.
Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much for doing this interview with us for Colombia and Latin America. How did you meet each other? Why did you want to make Victim Mentality?
Kyungho Sohn. Thank you very much for taking the time to speak with us! Krocodile and I both grew up loving heavy metal. We became friends in 2005 and a few years later wanted to make a band together to share our love of heavy metal with other people. When we first started Victim Mentality we were trying to sound like classic heavy metal bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. But then we changed our style and decided to become a glam metal band instead!
C. B. Who are your biggest musical influences?
K. S. As I said before, we listen to a lot of classic heavy metal and all like bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. And we like glam metal bands like Motley Crue too. Personally, I also am a big fan of extreme metal as well so I listen to a lot of black metal like Cradle of Filth and Emperor.
C. B. What topics inspire the band to compose and play your songs?
K. S. We draw inspiration for our songs from our daily lives. A lot of the things we talk about are focused on love and sex that people around our age actually experience. We use real stories as the inspiration for our music.
C. B. We already learned a little bit about the Korean metal scene when I interviewed Ishtar in 2012. In your personal opinion, how is the state of the metal scene in Korea today?
K. S. It’s on the decline. The number of bands in Korea is increasing but only a small number of them play heavy metal. And those bands that do play heavy metal are all split into different subgenres such as thrash metal, death metal, etc. This is why Victim Mentality wants to show heavy metal music to many people. Our music if fun and energetic so I think it’s a good way to introduce more people to the fantastic world of heavy metal!
C. B. This year, Victim Mentality will make your international debut at one of the most famous festivals in the world: SXSW. What are your expectations about American crowds and what new songs will you be playing at the festival?
K. S. We’re really looking forward to playing at SXSW and are excited that our first overseas shows will take place in the US because it’s where glam metal originated! At SXSW, our set lists will be made up of songs from our new full-length album, “Heavy Metal Is Back.” We’re curious to see how people react to our music. I think that anyone who is a fan of 80’s heavy metal will definitely love us!
C. B. Do you know any Latin American bands or musicians? If not, what would you like to learn about music in Latin America?
K. S. I know Sepultura, Soulfly, Sarcofago, and Massacration. I really f*** love Massacration. And I know Angra and other bands too. I’ve heard that nowadays in Latin America there are many young trash metal bands. If I ever have the chance to go to Latin America, I’d like to meet those bands.
C. B. What Korean bands or musicians do you recommend that people check out?
K. S. If you glam and sleazy metal like Victim Mentality, check out The Hysterics. If you’re into trash metal, check out Crash and Method. Fans of metalcore should give Remnants of the Fallen a listen.
C. B. What are you plans after SXSW 2015?
K. S. We’re going to do lots of shows in support of “Heavy Metal Is Back.” It’s coming out at the end of March and we’re really excited for people to hear it.
