Otra de las sorpresas surcoreanas en el SXSW 2015 proviene de este talentoso matrimonio, quienes están listos para descargar su música nuevamente en los Estados Unidos, luego de su asombroso debut en el Coachella 2011. – Another Korean surprises at SXSW 2015 comes from this talented marriage, who are ready to bust his music to the United States again, after his amazing debut at Coachella 2011.

Considerados como uno de los dúos más eclécticos y populares en la escena electro surcoreana, el SXSW no vaciló en invitar a EE como parte de su cartel oficial este año. Y no es para menos, ya que sería la segunda vez que este matrimonio conformado por la talentosa lil E (Yunjoung Lee) y su esposo, Big E (Hyunjoon Lee), unidos por su propio amor, el espíritu de innovar, el arte, la música y el universo fashion desde la primavera del 2008. En el otoño, EE lideró una gran exposición artística que duró 3 días, allí mismo lanzaron su primer single “Curiosity Kills.”
Desde entonces, la talentosa pareja ha tenido un camino ascendente en el que se convirtieron en uno de los dúos más importantes en la escena electro tanto en Seúl como en el resto del mundo. No en vano, EE participó en el World DJ Festival en mayo de 2009, y meses después lanzaron su álbum debut “Imperfect, I’mperfect”, en el que con una excelente producción que combina el nostálgico sonido Electro y Dance de los 80s con su propia visión como artistas surcoreanos empezaron a llamar la atención de la crítica especializada. Con esas credenciales, EE debutó en abril de 2011 por primera vez en los Estados Unidos, en uno de los festivales más importantes del circuito mundial: el Coachella, en California. Cabe resaltar que ellos fueron los únicos embajadores asiáticos y coreanos en dicho certamen, despertando elogios y fans. Al año siguiente, realizaron una espectacular gira por el Reino Unido.
En abril de 2013, EE lanzó su segundo EP: “Unprdctvprdct”; y en agosto de 2014, su tercer EP: “Weird People We R Da People”. En cada producción, EE nos abofetea con su genialidad y su constante búsqueda por ser un dueto que marque la diferencia y lleve nuestros sentidos al máximo nivel, dándonos esa bala mágica de oxígeno sonoro para romper paradigmas.
Con todos estos antecedentes, ya sabemos por qué EE entrará por la puerta grande al gran festival de Austin. Todo esto para presentarles esta entrevista que nos concedió lil E días antes de su viaje a Texas para que conozcan más acerca de este gran dueto.
Colectivo Bunka. Muchas gracias por hacer esta entrevista con nosotros para Colombia y Latinoamérica. ¿Cómo se conocieron? ¿Por qué quisieron hacer juntos EE?
lil E. Durante una actuación vi a un extraño hombre con el pelo largo contemplándome. Tenía una cierta aura. Esa fue mi primera impresión de Big E. Él era un artista y yo era una estilista y vocalista. Cada uno conversamos sobre las cosas que queríamos hacer y eso conllevó al origen de EE.
C. B. ¿Qué temas inspiran a EE para componer e interpretar sus canciones?
lil E. Nosotros siempre tratamos de hablar sobre temas de actualidad y cosas de nuestra vida diaria. En definitiva, nos inspiran las noticias y nuestras conversaciones.
C. B. ¿Por qué decidieron combinar el arte, la moda y la cultura con la música?
lil E. Porque esas son las cosas que nos interesan, así que nos parecía muy natural poder incorporarlas en nuestro arte y nuestro espectáculo.
C. B. ¿Cuál es tu opinión acerca de la música electrónica surcoreana? ¿Cómo te gustaría ver que la escena crezca mucho más?
lil E. Corea del Sur ha tenido una escena electrónica desde hace mucho tiempo. A pesar que no recibe mucha atención, hay grandes músicos. Creo que si la escena continúa mejorando en su propio marketing, se descubrirá una amplia y más diversa gama de oyentes.
C. B. ¿Cuáles son algunos de tus mejores recuerdos al presentarte en Coachella 2011?
lil E. Cuando empezamos a tocar, la gente estaba corriendo apresuradamente al escenario para vernos. A pesar de que no sabían quiénes éramos, los vi correr y, ¡eso fue increíble!
C. B. Ustedes están volviendo a los EE.UU. para tocar en el SXSW. ¿Cuáles son sus expectativas de este festival? ¿Van a estar tocando nuevos temas durante el SXSW?
lil E. Siempre hacemos un show diferente cada vez que tocamos. En estas últimas semanas, hemos estado preparando todo nuestro material para que esté listo a ser exhibido en nuestras vitrinas y estamos muy emocionados de mostrárselos a las personas. Nuestras actuaciones van a ser extrañas pero muy divertidas. En el festival, estamos muy contentos de conocer muchísimos fans así como las demás presentaciones de todo el mundo. Estamos interesados en explorar Austin y vivir la experiencia cultural del SXSW.
C. B. ¿Conoces algún músico o alguna banda latinoamericana? Si no, ¿qué te gustaría aprender sobre la música de América Latina?
lil E. No sé mucho al respecto, pero me gusta la música latinoamericana. Me hace sentir emocionada. Por favor, recomiéndenos algunos buenos y únicos shows latinoamericanos para nosotros. ¡Nos aseguraremos de comprobarlo!
C. B. ¿Qué bandas o músicos surcoreanos nos recomiendan para que la gente los conozca?
C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus planes después del SXSW 2015?
lil E. Lanzamos un nuevo EP digital el pasado 13 de marzo llamado “Dear Door”, y estaremos presentándonos en vivo para promocionarlo. Big E está haciendo un poco de arte para la Bienal de Venecia. Y yo ando trabajando nuevamente con mi primera banda, Pippi Band.

Considered as one of the most eclectic and popular acts in the Korean electro music scene, SXSW did not hesitate to invite EE to perform at this year’s festival. The married couple of lil E (Yunjoung Lee), and her husband Big E (Hyunjoon Lee), originally formed in the spring of 2008 through a shared love of innovation, art, music and fashion. That fall, EE led a three-day art exhibition to mark the release of their first single “Curiosity Kills.”
Since then, this talented couple has been on an upward path becoming one of the most important duos in the Korean electronic music scene both in Seoul and overseas. EE performed at the World DJ Festival in May 2009, and months later they released their debut full-length album “Imperfect, I’mperfect”, which attracted attention for its excellent production and nostalgic nods to ’80s dance and electronic music. Then in April 2011, EE made their live debut in the United States at one of the most important festivals worldwide: Coachella. They are the only Korean act at this event, and received praise and new American fans from their performance. The following year, they played in the UK.
In April 2013, EE released their “Unprdctvprdct” EP, and then they put out an EP called “Weird People We R Da People” in August 2014. With each release, EE floor listeners with their genius and their great quest to be a duo that leaves an indelible musical mark while raising people’s sense to the highest levels.
With all of this mind, we are confident that EE will do amazing things at the great SXSW festival in Austin. We spoke with lil E days before her trip to Texas to find out more about EE.
Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much for doing this interview with us for Colombia and Latin America. How did you meet each other? Why did you want to make EE together?
lil E. During a performance, I saw a strange man with long hair staring at me. He had a certain aura. That was my first impression of Big E. He was an artist and I was a stylist and vocalist. We talked with each other about things we wanted to do and that led to the start of EE.
C. B. What topics inspire EE to compose and perform your songs?
lil E. We always try to talk about contemporary issues and things from our daily life. News and conversation inspire us.
C. B. Why did you decide to combine art, fashion, and culture with music?
lil E. Those are all the things we’re interested in, so it only seemed natural to include all of them in our art and performances.
C. B. What is your opinion about Korea’s electronic music scene? How would you like to see the scene continue to grow?
lil E. Korea has had an electronic music scene for a long time now. It doesn’t receive much attention, but there are great musicians in the scene. I think if the scene continues to improve at marketing itself, it will discover a more diverse range of listeners.
C. B. What are some of your best memories from playing at Coachella 2011?
lil E. When we started to play, people were running to the stage to see us. Even though they didn’t know who we were, I saw them running and, it was awesome!
C. B. You’re coming back to the US to play at SXSW. What are your expectations for the festival? Will you be playing any new music during SXSW?
lil E. We do a different performance every time we play. We’ve been getting everything ready for our showcases for the past several weeks and are excited to show them to people. Our performances are going to be strange but funny. At the festival, we’re excited to meet lots of music fans and other acts from around the world. We’re interested in exploring Austin and experiencing SXSW’s culture.
C. B. Do you know any Latin American bands or musicians? If not, what would you like to learn about music in Latin America?
lil E. I don’t know a lot about it, but I like Latin American music. It makes me feel excited. Please recommend some unique Latin American acts to us. We’ll be sure to check them out!
C. B. What Korean bands or musicians do you recommend that people check out?
lil E. We released a brand new digital EP on March 13th called “Dear Door”, and we’ll be doing some performances for it. Big E is making some art for the Venice Biennale. And I’m working together with my first band, Pippi Band, again.
