A exclusive interview with this great Asian music metal band to Colectivo Bunka from Los Angeles! – Entrevista exclusiva con esta grandiosa agrupación asiática desde Los Ángeles para Colectivo Bunka!

Music is an infinitely deep ocean where sound proposals are unique and of excellent quality. One is the work of a group of Indonesian origin, whose they have metal music influences like X-Japan, Guns and Roses, Poison, and many more. So, they decided stay them in the cradle of Glam Metal in the 80’s: Los Angeles. REOG told us about theirs inceptions, the meaning of their name, the power of their lyrics and their projects in this 2011, in a exclusive interview to Colectivo Bunka, the only J-Music specialized mass media in Spanish to Colombia and Latin America.

Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much to attend us in this interview for Colombia and Latin America. I was reading the biography of the band and the meaning of his name, REOG, how did you develop this musical synergy through your songs and to establish the spiritual thought about moral and ethical theory in a world that seems to see things in black and white?

Duan Damais. Each one of us has matured in both individual and musical levels. We realized that human beings often times forget that our lives are not made and dictated only by certain extremes, but what lies in-between. White can be a neutral color, but any painter out there would know that black is the combination of multiple colors, saturated into one. Between black and white lies an area that contains a rich spectrum of colors.  As amateurs in our earlier days, some of us would only listen and play to hard music, and only hard music – or the other way around … endless power ballads or love songs. The power of REOG is in the contrast that we make and offer in our music. We don’t want to be trapped in a certain boundary. We want to be free, and deliver that sense of freedom to our listeners… and free their minds too.

C.B. Why REOG decided to play Heavy Metal music and why to live in Los Angeles?

D.D. REOG was originally a Thrash Metal band. We were heavily influenced by 80’s Thrash like Megadeth, Metallica, and Judas Priest as well as heavy glam rockers like Guns n Roses and Poison. We just happened to meet in LA in 2005. Sammy originally started the band with Raymond and Victor who are no longer with us. Eventually they found me just when I moved to Los Angeles right after finishing school in San Jose, California.

C.B. What has been the response from your fans at these 6 years of musical life with his songs?

D.D. When we were an all out thrash band, things were not too great as in our audience were so limited. Eventually we entered a period of non-productivity in which things seem to be going down. Eventually I took an initiative to get the band back together this time with a new bassist and drummer. Our ex-lead guitarist Raymond quit to pursue a business in Indonesia, so I had to take the lead guitar responsibility on top of singing. The new formation also puts my partner Sammy into a vocalist position as well as handling rhythm guitars.

As soon as we debut our new formation and songs, the responses have been very positive. We somehow got disliked by our old thrash fans, but we are getting a wider spectrum of audience now. Most especially Asian rock fans who also happen to be Japanese rock fans.

So we lost old fans, and gain newer ones. But this time, the responses have been very solid and positive. We like it!

C.B. Briefly, how did the production process in the recent album For the Flowers?

D.D. The production process took 4 months. We entered the studio in December 2009 and had the songs done in March 2010. Shortly after, they hit Amazon and iTunes.

C.B. Briefly, what are their plans in this year?

D.D. We are finishing a new single package which will be called In My Dreams. It will hit the online stores in May 2011. A video for In My Dreams is also in the works. We are so excited to bring it to the market and music video sites like Youtube and such. Before the end of June we will already be hitting the road again beginning from Southern California cities like LA, Anaheim, and San Diego. More info will come soon.

La música es un océano infinitamente profundo donde encontramos propuestas sonoras únicas y de excelente calidad. Una de ellas es el trabajo de una agrupación de origen indonesio, cuyas influencias metaleras como X-Japan, Guns and Roses, Poison, y muchas más, los situaron en la cuna del Glam Metal en los ochentas: Los Ángeles. REOG nos habló de sus orígenes, el significado de su nombre, el poder de sus letras y sus proyectos en este 2011, en esta entrevista exclusiva para el Colectivo Bunka, único medio de comunicación especializado en J-Music de habla hispana para Colombia y Latinoámerica.

C.B. Muchas gracias por atendernos en esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica. Leyendo la biografía de la banda y el significado de su nombre, ¿Cómo logran por medio de la música desarrollar esa sinergia y ese pensamiento espiritual sobre la moral y la ética en un mundo que pareciera ver las cosas en blanco y negro?

D.D. Cada uno de nosotros ha madurado a nivel individual y musical. Nos dimos cuenta que los seres humanos muchas veces olvidamos que nuestras vidas no se hacen ni se dictan sólo por determinados extremos; pero, ¿qué hay del equilibrio? El blanco puede ser un color neutro, pero cualquier pintor conoce que el negro es la combinación de varios colores en uno solo. Entre el blanco y el negro se encuentra un área que contiene una rica gama de colores. Como aficionados que fuimos anteriormente, algunos de nosotros solíamos escuchar y tocar Hard Rock, y sólo tocábamos ese tipo de música – o al revés, tocábamos las poderosas baladas y alrededor de un sin fin de canciones de amor. El poder de REOG proviene del contraste que hacemos y ofrecemos en nuestra música. No queremos estar atrapados en un cierto límite. Queremos ser libre, y ofrecer esa sensación de libertad a nuestros oyentes… y de paso, liberarles sus mentes también.

C.B. ¿Por qué REOG decidio enfocarse en el Heavy Metal y por qué establecerse en LA?

D.D. REOG fue originalmente una banda de Thrash Metal. Estábamos muy influenciados por diferentes grupos de Thrash de la década de los 80 como Megadeth, Metallica y Judas Priest, así como el Glam Rock pesado como Guns and Roses y Poison. Acabábamos de conocernos en Los Angeles en el 2005. Sammy fundó originalmente a la banda junto con Raymond y Víctor, que ya no están con nosotros. Finalmente me encontraron justamente cuando me mudé a Los Ángeles después de culminar mis estudios escolares en San José, California.

C.B. ¿Cuál ha sido la respuesta de sus fanáticos en estos 6 años de vida musical con sus canciones?

D.D. Cuando estábamos juntos como banda de Thrash, las cosas no eran demasiado grandes y nuestros seguidores fueron pocos. Luego, entramos en un período improductivo en el que las cosas parecieron ir en caída. Entonces, tomé el liderazgo para que la banda surgiera de nuevo pero más unidos, esta vez con un nuevo bajista y baterista. Nuestro ex-guitarrista Raymond se fue a desarrollar negocios en Indonesia, por lo que tuve que asumir además la responsabilidad de la guitarra líder encima de ser vocalista. La nueva formación también puso a mi compañero Sammy como segundo vocalista, así como el manejo de las guitarras rítmicas.

Tan pronto como debutamos con nuestra nueva formación y nuevas canciones, las respuestas han sido muy positivas, de apoyo constante. De alguna manera, nuestros antiguos fanáticos rechazan nuestra actual propuesta, pero hoy día estamos consiguiendo un amplio espectro de nuevos seguidores. Precisamente, están en la mayor parte de Asia, especialmente rockeros, quienes también son fans del J-Rock. Así que hemos perdido los viejos fans, pero hemos ganado otros nuevos. Y esta vez, sus respuestas han sido muy sólidas y positiva. ¡Nos gusta!

C.B. Brevemente, ¿Cómo fue el proceso de producción de For The Flowers?

D.D. El proceso de producción tomó 4 meses. Entramos en el estudio en diciembre de 2009 y tenía las canciones listas en marzo de 2010. Poco después, se lanzó con éxito nuestro disco en Amazon e iTunes, online.

C.B. Brevemente, ¿Cuáles son los planes que tienen ustedes en este año?

D.D. Estamos terminando un nuevo single que se llamará In My Dreams. Llegará a las tiendas en línea en mayo de 2011. También se está produciendo un video de In My Dreams. Estamos muy entusiasmados de llevar nuestro trabajo al mercado musical en sitios web de videos musicales como Youtube y similares. Antes de finales de junio estaremos viajando de nuevo, partiendo a ciudades en el sur de California como Los Angeles, Anaheim y San Diego. Más información estará pronto disponible.
