From New York City, Suaka’s musicians talked with us in this interview. They told us a little about their friendship with REOG and their love with Santana’s and Puya’s strings. – Desde Nueva York, los miembros de Suaka nos concedieron esta entrevista contándonos un poco de su amistad con sus compatriotas REOG y su gusto por las guitarras de Santana y Puya.

A few months ago we had our first interview with a glam and heavy metal music named REOG of Indonesian origin, which represent the U.S. Pacific region. But we know that is not the only and therefore Suaka is another Indonesian Ambassador with his thrash metal from the bowels of the Big Apple. They are the ones who command the Asian metal scene in the East Coast. Since its birth in 2001, under the influences of Metallica, System of a Down and melodies typical of his country, Suaka has in its inventory two discs (Episode I in 2007 and Unify in 2010), several shows in the U.S. and Indonesia and an EP, Indonesia (2005). They have also played with Goro, A-metal band legend in North America and this year they returned from a tour across their mother country. They are now focused on doing more music. We spoke with frontman and vocalist, Rully «Roots» Rochmat, who told us about their Latin American musical, tastes such as Puya, Santana and Brujeria, as well as a possible tour in the fall on 2011 maybe again Indonesia or the United States.

Colectivo Bunka.  Thank you very much to attend us in this interview for Colombia and Latin America. Tell us, how did you meet to play together and to raise Suaka?

Rully Rochmat.  I met QQ back in 94. We have been jamming ever since.  There have been many changes as far as band members. On the recent formation, on the tour we played with Cipta Moehammad, on guitar and live we play with Hide Harayama on the lead guitar and John Meredith on the drums.

C. B. What are your biggest music influences to Suaka?

R. R. There’s definitely lots of thrash metal, alternative and world music, specially, Indonesian ethnic melody.

C. B. What inspires Suaka topics to compose?

R. R. Any topics from the issues that go on around the world as far as politics, social issues, and every day things that we face in live. We try to bring out positive message in our lyrics

C. B. I watched out that you and REOG are the Indonesian Metal Music Ambassadors in America. What is your vision about the Indonesian metal music scene around the world in the present day?

R. R. I think it will keep growing , as far as metal music is widely accepted everywhere.

C. B. In the Suaka’s history, what is the most important concert that you never forgive? Why?

R. R. It has to be when we played at CBGB in 2007. The club has a lot of history as far as music that came out on that era.

C. B. Did you know or did you listen any Latin America band or musician? (If your answer is no, what would you like of Latin America about your music?)

R. R. Yes, we have a lot of them. I personally like Santana, Puya, Brujeria, and would love to listen to some of the recent acts.

C. B. Briefly, tell us how was the process to compose, produces and releases Unify? What did you be the fans answers?

R. R. We pretty much jammed it all out and edited some parts after. We arranged them and recorded them over and until we finally found the right parts. A different approached than the 1^st album. It has a live feel; so far the crowd’s enjoying it.

C. B. What plans do you have this year?

R. R. Well, we just got back from tour in Indonesia. We did 6 cities while we were out there. Now we’re just jamming some new riffs, write new songs and hoping we can start recording soon. We’re planning to go on tour in the fall on 2011.

Hace unos meses tuvimos nuestra primera entrevista con una banda de glam y heavy de origen indonesio llamada REOG, quienes representan la región pacífica estadounidense. Pero sabemos que no es la única y por ello, Suaka es el otro embajador indonesio con su thrash metal desde las entrañas de la Gran Manzana. Ellos son los que comandan la escena metalera asiática en la Costa Este. Desde su nacimiento en el 2001, bajo las influencias de Metallica, System of a Down y melodías típicas de su país, Suaka tiene en su inventario dos discos (Episode I en el 2007 y Unify en el 2010), varias presentaciones en Estados Unidos e Indonesia y un EP llamado Indonesia (2005). Además han tocado con Goro, leyenda del metal asiático en Norteamérica y este año regresaron de una gira por todo su país. Ahora están concentrados en seguir haciendo más música. Hablamos con su frontman y vocalista, Rully “Roots” Rochmat, quien nos habló incluso de sus gustos musicales latinoamericanos como Puya, Santana y Brujería, así como una posible gira en otoño del 2011 quizás de nuevo en Indonesia o en Estados Unidos.

Colectivo Bunka. Muchas gracias por atendernos en esta entrevista para Colombia y América Latina. Cuéntanos, ¿cómo se reunieron para tocar juntos y fundar Suaka?

Rully Rochmat. Conocí a QQ en el 94. Habíamos estado haciendo jamming sessions desde entonces. Ha habido muchos cambios en cuanto a los miembros de la banda. En la reciente formación, en la gira que hicimos, tocamos con Cipta Moehammad, en la guitarra y con Hide Harayama en la guitarra en los conciertos, y  además con John Meredith en la batería.

C. B. ¿Cuáles son las mayores influencias musicales de Suaka?

R. R. Definitivamente hay un montón de bandas de thrash metal, rock alternativo y world music, especialmente, las melodías étnicas de Indonesia.

C. B. ¿Qué temas inspiran a Suaka para componer música?

R. R. Cualquier temas de las temáticas que van por todo el mundo en cuanto a la política, las cuestiones sociales, y cada día las cosas que nos enfrentamos en vivo. Tratamos de llevar a cabo un mensaje positivo en nuestras letras

C. B. Vi que ustedes y REOG son los embajadores de metal indonesio en los Estados Unidos. ¿Cuál es su visión sobre la actual escena metalera de Indonesia en todo el mundo?

R. R. Creo que va a seguir creciendo, por lo que el metal es ampliamente aceptado en todas partes.

C. B. En la historia de la Suaka, ¿cuál fue el concierto más importante que nunca olvidan? ¿Por qué?

R. R. Tiene que haber sido cuando tocamos en el CBGB en el 2007. El club tiene mucha historia en cuanto a la música que sonaba en esa época.

C. B. ¿Conocen o han escuchado alguna banda o artista latinoamericano? (Si su respuesta es no, ¿qué te gusta de Latinoamérica en cuanto a su música?)

R. R. Sí, tenemos un montón de ellos. Personalmente, me gusta Santana, Puya, Brujería, y me encantaría escuchar a algunos de los recientes trabajos musicales de otros artistas.

C. B. Cuéntanos brevemente, ¿cómo fue el proceso de componer, producir y lanzar al mercado Unify? ¿Cuáles fueron las respuestas de sus fans?

R. R. Estábamos bastante ocupados en todo el proceso y después editamos algunas partes. Arreglábamos las canciones y luego las grabábamos una y otra vez hasta que finalmente encontramos las piezas adecuadas. Un acercamiento diferente al que hicimos con el primer álbum. Se siente vivo y por esto la gente lo está disfrutando en estos momentos.

C. B. ¿Qué planes tiene ustedes en el 2011?

R. R. Bueno, acabamos de volver de nuestra gira en Indonesia. Hicimos presentaciones en seis ciudades mientras estábamos allá. Ahora sólo estamos improvisando algunos nuevos riffs, estamos escribiendo nuevas canciones con la esperanza de que podamos empezar a grabar pronto. Estamos planeando irnos de gira nuevamente en el otoño de 2011.
