Colectivo Bunka entrevistó a Stephanie Yanez, quien desde California nos concedió esta entrevista contándonos sus inicios, sus éxitos como cantante y reportera, pero sobre todo, su deseo de propagar su música por todo el mundo, incluso que sea escuchada por sus fans en Latinoamérica. – From California, Colectivo Bunka got this great interview with American J-pop singer, Stephanie Yanez, who she spoke about her inceptions, her achievements like singer and reporter, but also, her dreams & expectations to spread her music around the world, even she could be listened for the Latin American fans.

El amor y la devoción por algo siempre terminan en grandes resultados. Los sueños se hacen realidad junto con el éxito y la satisfacción de cumplir una meta, un anhelo alimentado desde la infancia. Stephanie Yanez ya sabía a los 5 años qué quería ser cuando fuera adulta: cantante. Y fue así como ella se esforzó en no extinguir su sueño. En el 2005 debutó por la puerta grande en la Anime Expo que se realiza anualmente en Los Ángeles, y de ahí, la estrella del éxito de esta solista con nombre latino, raíces estadounidenses y espíritu japonés no se detiene. En estas líneas Stephanie nos desnuda su amor por su trabajo, sus inspiraciones y sus logros obtenidos en estos 7 años de carrera, pero con la misma humildad que la ha caracterizado, sin perder su alegría y su sencillez con sus fans a pesar que los medios y la gente del mundo del espectáculo la conocen como una famosa y talentosa artista norteamericana de J-pop. Una entrevista completa que publicamos en nuestro portal de noticias Wave en el que de paso nos revela que uno de sus tantos deseos es conocer nuestro continente para tocar allí en una futura gira.

Colectivo Bunka. Muchas gracias por concedernos esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica. Brevemente, ¿como empezó su carrera musical?

Stephanie Yanez. Comencé a relacionarme con la música J-pop cuando mis amigos japoneses me mostraron un grupo japonés llamado Dragon Ash, desde ahí comencé a escucharlos junto con otros artistas japoneses y empecé a buscar páginas web japonesas y a cantar de ahí en adelante en dicho lenguaje. Cuando decidí cantar más en japonés vi un concurso de Anime Expo llamado AX Idol y supe que era la oportunidad para ser vista por compañías como Geneon & I’VE, precisamente ellos fueron los que me impulsaron cuando gané el concurso. Geneon y I’VE querían grabar un par de canciones mías en los estudios Paramount en Hollywood, Paramount Studios es un estudio de grabación muy importante, artistas como Jimmy Hendrix han grabado allí, así que era un honor y una gran oportunidad, a estas compañías realmente les gustó mucho el hecho de que yo cantara en japonés y pensaron que tenía muy buen oído para ello así que continué cantándolo y así fue como me convertí hoy día en la artista de J-Pop norteamericana que soy.

C. B.  ¿Cuáles son tus más grandes influencias musicales?

S. Y. Mis más grandes influencias musicales, por el lado ingles son Sting de The Police, Mariah Carey, Björk… Mis influencias musicales japonesas son: Shiina Ringo, Kimura Kaela, Yuki, Tokyo Jihen; también he escuchado una gran variedad de sonidos musicales alrededor del mundo como India y Francia. Escuchar diferentes tipos de música y géneros musicales de todo el mundo realmente te ayuda a crecer como artista.

C. B.  ¿Qué temas te inspiran a la hora de componer?

S. Y. La vida en sí misma me inspira a escribir música; en la vida he experimentado tantas experiencias y aventuras asombrosas que tengo mucho de que escribir en mis canciones, también he vivido muchas cosas tristes tal como le sucede a todos y esto también me inspira al momento de componer mis temas, la vida es una cosa maravillosa y necesito agradecerle a ella todo lo que me ha dado, ya sean los momentos tristes, los tiempos alegres, o los que no lo son tanto, en alguna manera cada experiencia puede ser una inspiración para todos y para mí son esos pequeños momentos, esas pequeñas o grandes cosas las que me inspiran para crear mi música.

C. B. Brevemente, cuéntanos acerca de tu carrera como reportera para el documental Crazy Sexy Tokyo.

S. Y. Fui reportera para Crazy Sexy Tokyo, un documental filmado en Japón, producido por Anime Selects Comcast On Demand y debo decir que fue muy divertido; me filmaban haciendo un montón de cosas locas: comí helado de serpiente, fui a una casa japonesa y me vistieron como una Geisha, también estuve en clases ninja, hice un sinfín de cosas locas y divertidas, fue una experiencia verdaderamente agradable y para mí fue un gran honor poder ser parte de ello. Realmente agradezco el tiempo que compartí allí con Anime Selects Comcast On Demand, ellos fueron maravillosos y cuidaron muy bien de mí, en verdad les agradezco esa gran experiencia.

C. B. ¿Conoces o has escuchado alguna banda o algún músico latinoamericano? (Si tu respuesta es no, ¿qué te gustaría conocer acerca de la música en Latinoamérica?)

S. Y. He escuchado música de América Latina antes pero en este momento no podría nombrar ninguna banda o músico, aunque realmente me ha gustado y me encantaría conocer más acerca de Latinoamérica y tal vez de algún modo grabar una canción donde pueda mezclar sonidos latinoamericanos más sé que nunca podría hacerlo como lo hacen ustedes.

C. B. Muchas cantantes de J-pop son consideradas divas. ¿Cómo es la vida de una diva como tú en este ambiente?

S. Y. Yo no habría de llamarme a mí misma una diva. Soy una mujer independiente, norteamericana y cantante de J-pop, así que hago gran parte del trabajo y soy muy desenvuelta. Es verdad que cuento con muchas personas que me ayudan, quiero serle útil a todos los que me rodean pero no me gustaría actuar nunca como una diva ya que eso sería como una persona que sólo está sentada en su trono gritándole a la gente y pidiéndoles que hagan sus cosas por ella, yo sólo quiero ser alguien servicial y eso es todo lo que intento ser.

C. B. ¿Cuál crees que es tu ventaja al ser diferente a otros cantantes en el ambiente pop? ¿Qué hace diferente a Stephanie Yanez como cantante pop de las estrellas del montón?

S. Y. Creo que lo que me hace diferente es que soy estadounidense y canto en japonés, y ser una artista norteamericana significa que estoy representándolo en mi estado; también cuento con un productor japonés llamado Polo, él me enseña música J-pop y yo le muestro música muy norteamericana, así que pienso que es algo diferente, algo que no se ha escuchado mucho en este país y pienso que es muy bueno cantar en diferentes lenguas y quizá mostrarle a las personas cómo ser más conscientes hacia otras diferentes culturas y saciar la sed por conocer más acerca de muchos lugares distintos alrededor del mundo porque allá afuera hay muchísimos sitios hermosos, y yo ni siquiera he comenzado a viajar a estas maravillas pero siento que es importante para las personas ver cómo otras viven alrededor del mundo así que simplemente estoy feliz y dispuesta a cantar en japonés y compartir mi música con todos aquí en Estados Unidos así como en todas partes del mundo.

C. B. Brevemente, cuéntanos acerca de tu nueva canción Ultimate Miku World.

S. Y. Mi última canción Ultimate Miku World, fue lanzada en el portal Tinierme.com, un sitio de animé, juegos y avatar, ellos crearon un evento llamado Digital Dream Concert (Concierto Digital de Ensueño), básicamente fue una maravillosa oportunidad que me fue dada y pude trabajar oficialmente con Hatsune Miku, lo cual fue muy grande para mí y sentí un orgullo enorme cuando supe que a Crypton Future Media les había gustado la canción que Polo y yo compusimos para que Hatsune Miku y yo cantáramos a dúo. Me quedé inmóvil, fue simplemente increíble; la canción se llama Ultimate Miku World y habla de Hatsune Miku y yo y de como Hatsune Miku es aquella chica de la realidad virtual (vocaloid), del internet, que no es real y yo soy un ser humano real, una cantante, y ya saben, de alguna manera ella y yo pudimos estar juntas y cantar aun cuando ella no es real y yo sí, quiero decir, si ustedes escuchan nuestra canción verán que suena muy real e incluso podrán sentir la emoción, así que para mí fue un honor poder trabajar con Crypton Future Media y Hatsune Miku, Tinierme produjó para la canción un video musical animado y ahora ese video está en mi canal de YouTube, me encuentro muy feliz por tener este video y poder compartirlo con todo el mundo. Para mí ha sido una gran alegría pues no creo que muchos artistas norteamericanos hayan trabajado con Hatsune Miku, así que muchas personas me han dicho que soy una de las primeras norteamericanas que han trabajado con ella y por supuesto esto es un gran honor para mí.

C. B. ¿Qué planes tienes para este año?

S. Y. Tengo muchísimos planes para este año y para el próximo. Mi segundo nuevo álbum Rising y el nuevo sencillo homónimo serán lanzados pronto al mercado; acabo de grabar el nuevo video musical el cual estoy cantando junto con dos raperos japoneses llamados Mura y Kenshiro y como está por salir el nuevo video ya pronto estará en mi canal de YouTube, así que por favor estén atentos de lo que está por venir. Por supuesto el álbum estará en iTunes y pueden encontrar toda esta información en mi sitio web, igualmente pueden encontrarme en Twitter, así que estén pendientes a mi nuevo álbum, pues va a estar muy emocionante.

Love and devotion to something always end in awesome results. Dreams come true with the success and satisfaction of meeting a goal, a desire nurtured since childhood. Stephanie Yanez knew at early age 5 what she wanted to be when adult: singer. And so she tried not to extinguish her dream. In 2005 she debuted at Anime Expo, which held annually in Los Angeles, and then, the success of this star soloist with her Latin name, American roots & Japanese spirit does not stop. In these lines Stephanie undresses her love for her work, her inspirations and her achievements in the 7-year musical career, but with the same humility that has characterized it, without losing her joy and simplicity with their fans despite the media and show business people know her as a famous artist and talented American J-pop. A full interview we publish on our news portal Wave which incidentally she reveals that one of her many desires is to know our continent to play there in a future tour.

Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much to attend us in this interview for Colombia and Latin America. How was born your taste for J-pop music to become a singer of it?

Stephanie Yanez. I started to get into J-pop music when my Japanese friends introduce me to a Japanese group called Dragon Ash, ever since I listened to Dragon Ash and other Japanese artist and started looking up Japanese webs online and singing along with Japanese music. When I decided to sing more in Japanese I saw a contest of an Anime Expo’s called AX Idol and I knew it was a chance for me to be seen by companies such as Geneon and I’VE, and they were the ones that push me when I won the contest. Geneon and I’VE wanted to record a couple songs of me on Paramount Studios in Hollywood, Paramount Studios is a very famous recording studios and artist like Jimmy Hendrix recorded there, so was a very big opportunity and honor, the Japanese companies Geneon and I’VE really liked that I sing in Japanese and the tough I had a really good ear for Japanese so I continued to sing in Japanese and that’s how I became the American J-pop artist that I am today.

C. B. What are your biggest musical influences?

S. Y. My biggest musical influences as I’m American: I listened to Sting-The Police, Mariah Carey, Björk… My Japanese musical influences are; Shiina Ringo, Kimura Kaela, Yuki, Tokyo Jihen, also I’ve listened a lot of different music from all over the world like India and France; it really helps you grow if you listen to all different kind of music from all over and all different kinds of genres of music as well.

C. B. What are the topics that inspires you to compose your songs?

S. Y. Life inspires me to write music, I have experienced so many amazing opportunities and adventures in my life that I have a lot to write about in my songs, I also have experience very sad things as well in my life just as everyone else has and that also inspires me to write songs, life is an amazing thing and I need to cherish everything from it, be it the sad times or the happy times, or the so-so times, every experience can be an inspiration to everyone in some way, and to me those little moments, those little things or big things is what inspires me to write music.

C. B. Briefly, tell us about your career as a reporter for the documentary Crazy Sexy Tokyo.

S. Y. I was a reporter for Crazy Sexy Tokyo. Crazy Sexy Tokyo was a documentary film down in Japan, it was Anime Select’s Comcast On Demand, and this documentary was a lot of fun, the filmed me doing a lot of crazy things out there in Japan, they had me eat snake ice cream, I went to a Japanese house and they dress me up like a Geisha and I did ninja class, and there were so many others crazy fun things that I did out there and that was a really nice experience and was such an honor to be a part of that and I really cherish the time that I had out there with the Anime Select’s Comcast On Demand and staff, they were amazing and took very good care of me and I really cherish that good experience.

C. B. Did you hear any Latin American band or musician? (If your answer is no, what would you like to know ofLatin America about your music?)

S. Y. I have listened to Latin America music before, but I can’t name any band or musician at the top of my head, but I really like the music and would love to know even more about Latin America and maybe even somehow have a song where I can feature a Latin America kind of twisted sound but I know I could never do it like you guys do it in Latin America

C. B. Many J-pop singers are considered divas. How is the life of a diva like you in this environment?

S. Y.  I would not necessary call myself a diva. I’m an independent American J-pop singer so I do a lot of the work and I’m very involved, and I do have a lot of people helping me, is true, but I’ll never want to act like a diva, I want to be helpful to other people and all the people that are around me and I hope that I would never act like a diva because  that’s just like somebody who is just sitting in their throne yelling at people and asking them for favors and I just want to be someone that’s very helpful and that’s what I just trying to be

C. B. What is your bonus for being different from other singers in the pop scene? What makes it different to Stephanie Yanez pop singer as the highlights of the bunch?

S. Y. I think what makes me different is I’m American and I’m singing in Japanese and being an American artist that mean that I’m performing up in the states, and I do have a Japanese producer named Polo, and he brings a very J-Pop feels the music and I bring him a very American feels the music, so I think it’s something different, something that haven’t been heard in America as much and I think is good to sing in different languages I want to continue to sing in Japanese because I want to bring an awareness to people to have people more open minded and celebrate when people are singing in different languages, and maybe even show people how to be more aware at different cultures and to have a thirst to learn more about all different places all over the world, because there’s a lot of amazing places out there, and I haven’t even began to travel to all this different amazing places but I feel that is very important for  people to see how all different people live all around the world, and I’m just really happy that I’m able to sing in Japanese and share this music with everyone here in America as well as all over the world.

C. B. Briefly, tell us about the latest song Ultimate Miku World.

S. Y. My latest song was Ultimate Miku World, Ultimate Miku World was featured on Tinierme.com; Tinierme.com is a specialized homepage about Japanese anime, avatar, gaming site, and I’m its sponsor which basically means that my avatar is featured in a lot of different games on the site, and an event they have over there was called Digital Dream Concert, basically this was an amazing opportunity that was given to me and I was able to officially work with Hatsune Miku, this is a very big deal and when I found out that Crypton Future Media liked the song that polo and I created for Hatsune Miku and for me to sing together as a duo, that was a proud, I was static, it was just amazing, the song is called Ultimate Miku World and it is just all about Hatsune Miku and about me and how Hatsune Miku is this girl from virtual reality (vocaloid), from the internet, she is not real, and I am a very real human singer, but you know, somehow Hatsune Miku and myself can join  together and sing together even  though one is not real and one is, and then also make Hatsune Miku like a real person, I mean you listen to our song it sounds real and you can feel the emotion, so I was just so honored to be able to work with Crypton Future Media and Hatsune Miku, and Tinierme created a very special music video and now that video is on my YouTube and I’m so happy that I have this music video and that I can share it with everyone, is all animated by Tinierme, and yes it’s just a very awesome opportunity, and I don’t think too many American artist that are working in America have worked with Hatsune Miku,  and people have told me that I’m one of the first Americans to have ever worked with her so that was quite the honor.

C. B. What plans do you have this year?

S. Y. I have a lot of plans for this year and next year, my new second album Rising, and new single Rising is coming up soon, I just recorded my new music video for the single Rising which speech of two Japanese rappers called Mura & Kenshiro, with the new single coming up, the new music video will be out on my YouTube so please keep updated of what I am doing and my new album of course will be on iTunes, you can find out all my information on my official homepage of course I’m on Twitter, so be on the look at for my new album is a very exciting thing, I also have concerts coming up as well so you could find all that information there in my HP.
