Aiha Higurashi es de esas chicas que cree en la compatibilidad química a primera vista. En eso tiene razón y los resultados son claros. The Girl es de esas bandas que surgió espontáneamente de las afinidades y similitudes de tres talentosas mujeres en el que la simplicidad de este trío japonés radica en que pueden ensamblar melodías alternativas y canciones muy sólidas con su profesionalismo y su amor desenfrenado por la música, a pesar que la banda tiene una corta edad. Junto a ella, Tabasa Hayashi comanda el bajo y en la percusión está Naoko Okamoto. Ahora, The Girl aterrizará este fin de semana (del 1 al 3 de junio) a Nueva York junto con los emblemáticos Uhnellys para promover su disco debut llamado Lost in Wonder (6 Tunes TV Records), cuya característica es que fue hecho en vinilo, por lo que mantienen cierta conexión nostálgica pero agradable con el sonido del scratch cuando la aguja recorre los surcos para destapar una caja de pandora musical. Con ella hablamos días antes de partir de Tokio, en el que será su segunda vez que vuelve a pisar suelo estadounidense.
Colectivo Bunka. Muchas gracias por atendernos en esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica. Brevemente, ¿cómo se reunieron para tocar juntas?
Aiha Higurashi. Conocí a Tabasa cuando la bajista de mi ex-banda llamada Loves tenía gripe, ella había preguntado por nuestro baterista para tocar en lugar de él. Entonces la conocí. ¡Es una gran fan mía! Así que en 48 horas copió las partituras del bajo de Loves e hicimos juntas un show único de la banda. Cuando la conocí, me enamoré de su trabajo como bajista. Y decidimos juntas fundar una banda de chicas. Entonces le pregunté a mi amiga que estaba buscando una baterista joven que se vea linda, no sólo que supiera tocar batería sino que fuera atractiva. Entonces llegó Naoko a una sesión en el estudio y nos encantó, no sólo se ve linda sino también su toque único con la batería. ¡Así fue como nos conocimos!
C. B. ¿Qué temas inspira a The Girl para componer?
A. H.Yo solía estar en otra banda llamada Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her. Era un grupo rockero de tres piezas. Después de eso, me convertí en una artista en solitario y luego formé una banda llamada Loves. Pero echaba de menos tocar en un trío. Entonces conocí a Tabasa y nos encontramos con Naoko. Les sugerí hacer una sesión de estudio. En la primera sesión, ¡ya habíamos decidido ser una banda! ¡Era como si nos enamoramos a primera vista!
C. B. ¿Cuáles son tus mayores influencias musicales?
A. H. No New York, No Wave, Sonic Youth, Yoko Ono, PJ Harvey, Elliot Smith, etc… Yo soy tan melómana que escucho cualquier tipo de música: Rock, Noise, Hip Hop, Jazz, Folk, Country, Electro… Realmente me es imposible elegir una banda o un artista.
C. B. En la historia tanto de The Girl como la tuya, ¿cuál es la sesión más importante que nunca olvidarías? ¿Por qué?
A. H. Una vez que me había molestado con algunas personas del sello disquero y no hice una buena pista. Me odie a mi misma y todavía me arrepiento porque la gente que compró y escuchó mis canciones no sabía lo que estaba sucediendo detrás de todo esto. Fue totalmente el error más grande que nunca he olvidado y aprendí mucho de ello. Y nunca voy a expresar mi negatividad directamente a las canciones. Pero también sé que a veces la ira puede ser una buena motivación.
C. B. Brevemente, háblanos del nuevo LP en Vinilo Lost In Wonder. ¿Cómo fue el trabajo de la banda para este álbum y cuáles son sus expectativas?
A. H. Sólo quería escribir canciones tan simples como sea posible. Tabasa y yo tenemos mucho en común en cuanto a los gustos musicales. Naoko tiene un sabor diferente. Creo que es el mejor equilibrio. Sólo queríamos expresar ese sonido simple pero sólido como tres niñas pueden tocarlo. Pero de todos modos llegó a ser no sólo simple sino también encontrarás un montón de variedades. He estado escribiendo canciones como un zumbido, como de afán. Por eso, somos cuidadosas en concentrarnos para la primera impresión. También disponemos de un diseñador que hace cada cosa de The Girl, incluyendo los trajes para tocar en escena, las chaquetas del álbum, las mercancías… Él es como un Malcom McLaren para The Girl. Me gusta la idea de que la música y diseño estén juntos.
C. B. ¿Cuál es tu opinión acerca de la actual escena indie japonesa en todo el mundo?
A. H. Creo que es mucho mejor que a principios de 2000. Hay buenas bandas que me gustan mucho, asi como muchos pequeños festivales. Muchos de estos grupos son creadas por las generaciones jóvenes, lo cual me parece bastante impresionante. Algunas de las bandas son aburridas, ¡pero un montón de bandas que nos rodean son interesantes!
C. B. En este mes (Tour de lanzamiento en NY con Uhnellys), ¿Cuáles son sus expectativas de volver a tocar en los Estados Unidos?
A. H. Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que visité los EE. UU. ¡Estoy muy emocionada! Y Uhnellys es mi banda favorita, ¡lo cual nos hace aún más felices!

C. B. ¿Conoces o has oído alguna banda o músico latinoamericano? (Si tu respuesta es no, ¿qué te gustaría saber de América Latina acerca de su música?)
A. H. Lo siento, realmente no conozco nada… Quiero que todos en este mundo den a conocer nuestra música y deseo una gira por todo el mundo.
C. B. ¿Qué planes tienen este año?
A. H. Este verano vamos a grabar nuevo álbum; por el momento estamos escribiendo canciones activamente.
C. B. Muchas gracias por responder nuestra entrevista y nos gustaría que enviaras un saludo para nuestra audiencia en Colombia, Latinoamérica y del Colectivo Bunka.

Aiha Higurashi is the kind of girl who believes in the chemical compatibility at first sight. That is right, and the results are clear. The Girl is one of those bands that emerged spontaneously from the affinities and similarities of three talented women in the simplicity of this trio is that Japanese can join Alternative melodies and songs very solid with her professionalism and her boundless love for music, although the band has a young age. Beside her, Hayashi Tabasa commands bass and Naoko Okamoto is the drummer. Now, The Girl will land this weekend (from 6/1 to 6/3) to New York along with the iconic Uhnellys to promote her album debut called Lost in Wonder (6 TV Tunes Records), whose characteristic is that it was done in vinyl thereby maintaining some connection with the nostalgic but pleasant scratch sound when the needle goes grooves to open a Pandora’s box musical. With days before she spoke from Tokyo, which again she will in the U.S. for second time.
Colectivo Bunka: Thank you very much to attend us in this interview for Colombia and Latin America. Briefly, How did you met to play together?
Aiha Higurashi. I met Tabasa when my ex-band Loves’ bass player was flu, she was asked by our drummer to play instead of him. Then I met Tabasa. She was a big fan of me! So in 48 hours she copied the bass line of Loves, and did a Loves’ show together. When I met her, I just fell in love with her bass play. And we decided to do a girls band together. So we asked my friend that I was looking for a girl drummer who looks cute, meant not about drum play but her looks was cute. Then Naoko came to the studio session and we fell in love with not only her looks but also her play. That’s how we met!
C. B. What topics inspires for The Girl to compose?
A. H. I used to be in a band called Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her. It was 3-piece rock band. After that, I became solo artists and then I formed a band called Loves. But I miss so much about doing 3-piece band. Then I met Tabasa and we found Naoko. I suggested doing studio session. At 1st session, we had already decided to be a band! It was like we loved each other at first sight!
C. B. What are your biggest music influences?
A. H. No New York, No Wave, Sonic Youth, Yoko Ono, Pj Harvey, Elliott Smith, etc… I am so greedy about listening to any kinds of music: Rock, Noise, Hip Hop, Jazz, Folk, Country, Electro… So actually it is impossible to choose one band or artist!
C. B. In the Aiha Higurashi’s history, what is the most important session that you never forgive? Why?
A. H. Once I had hassled with some record label’s persons and I made no-good track. I hated myself and I still regret it because people who bought and listened to my songs didn’t know what was happening in the back ground .It was totally my biggest mistake ever and I learned a lot from it. And I will never express negative power directly to songs. But I also know sometimes anger can be a good motivation.

C. B. Briefly, tell us about the new LP Vinyl: Lost In Wonder. How was the work of the band for this album and what are your expectations?
A. H. I just wanted to write songs as simply as possible. Me and Tabasa have a lot in common in music taste. Naoko has different taste. I think it is best balance. We just wanted to express simple and solid sound as 3 girls can play. But anyhow it came out to be not only just simple but also having bunch of varieties. I have been writing songs by the hum. So we carefully focus on the first impression. Also we have designer who does every The Girl‘s things including stage costume, album jackets, merchandise… He is like Malcom McLaren of The Girl. I like the idea that music and design come together.
C. B. What’s your opinion about Japanese Indie music scene around the world in the present day?
A. H. I think it is much better than early 2000. There are good bands I like a lot. And So many small festivals are created by young generations which are pretty impressive! Some of the bands are boring but lots of bands around us are interesting!
C. B. In June, (Release NY Tour with Uhnellys), What are your expectations playing again in the United States?
A. H. It’s been a while since I toured US. I’m so excited! And Uhnellys is my favorite band that makes us even happier!
C. B. Did you know or did you hear any Latin America band or musician? (If your answer is no, what would you like to know of Latin America about your music?)
A. H. Sorry I don’t really know… I want everybody in this world to know our music and I want to tour all over the world!
