Tokio. 1988. Dos chicos se mueven en sus tablas de skates yendo a algún lugar. Era el fin de una década plasmada por la lucha entre el pop y el heavy metal, entre lo underground y lo comercial; una década donde los excesos en la música estaban cobrando su factura formándose una nueva revolución en el ámbito del punk la cual conocimos después como el grunge. Y en la gran capital del Sol Naciente, Comi e Isobe, amantes del punk y del skate, estaban preparando el esqueleto de lo que sería luego de un par de años en esta gran banda que se renueva como un ave fénix ante las circunstancias. Abnormals continúa imparable en esta onda del hardcore y del punk japonés con melodías new wave y riffs agresivos que nos recuerdan que el punk no está muerto, simplemente se mudó por un tiempo a germinar en el archipiélago asiático para dar forma a nuevos grupos que están actualmente tocando en diversas partes del mundo. Comi, la voz hecha grito, e Isobe, su primer guitarrista, estuvieron armando esta estructura con viscerales sonidos a lo darkcorey algo de rockabilly. Ahora, Abnormals está promocionando su quinto álbum en estudio, Holy Blind (2011, PopGroup Recordings), cuyos miembros actuales acompañan a Comi: Hagi (bajista); Yuri y Kiyo, en las guitarras; y en la percusión, Masato. Desde 1999, Abnormals ha tenido la bendición musical de no sólo lanzar en ese año su primer disco homónimo sino de haber sido también los teloneros de los legendarios The Misfists, y de ahí, bandas como Yellow Machine Gun, Zeke, y recientemente, Stupids (Reino Unido), han hecho que ellos se ganen merecidamente un espacio en la escena mundial punk hardcore. Por ello, Comi decidió aceptar nuestra invitación ya que él desea escuchar buen punk latinoamericano algún día así como su inolvidable presentación en el Air Jam con su nueva alineación cuando sus antiguos miembros habían renunciado. ¿Su futuro? Seguir punkeando por un buen rato en cualquier lugar del planeta.

Colectivo Bunka. Muchas gracias por aceptarnos esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica. Es un honor para nosotros. Cuéntanos (brevemente), ¿cómo se reunieron ustedes para tocar juntos?

Comi. ¿Como están ustedes? Gracias. Aquí voy a hablar de cómo acabé formando Abnormals. Cuando tenía 18 años, practicaba el skateboarding. Con un grupo de amigos que conocí a través del skate, decidimos hacer algo interesante que era tocar juntos esta música. Cuando empezamos a tocar, no estábamos haciéndolo muy en serio. Pero a medida que fuimos a ver un montón de conciertos de punk rock nos volvimos más serios para tocar y componer canciones y comenzamos a llevar nuestros demos a diferentes lugares rockeros y las personas que se encontraban en las bandas de punk rock para obtener con nosotros estar en los mismos conciertos. Así es como todo comenzó.

C. B. ¿Cuáles son tus mayores influencias musicales?

C. Nos influenciaban bandas como The Misfits, The Cramps, The Damned y así sucesivamente. Básicamente, me encanta la melodiosa agresividad del rock oscuro y pesado.

C. B. ¿Qué temas te inspiran para componer las canciones?

C. Me inspira todo tipo de cosas, pero la mayoría de veces la inspiración viene de mi interior. Compongo canciones que trascienden mis sentimientos con el fin de enfrentarlos y resolverlos yo mismo.

C. B. Cuando la banda se fundó, ¿cómo estaba la escena en Tokio?

C. Cuando Abnormals se formó, el rock alternativo estaba dominando la escena en Tokio. Pero de alguna manera una gran cantidad de bandas también habían sido influenciadas por la música hardcore japonesa.

C. B. ¿Cuál era la actividad social del punk en los años 70 y 80 en Japón?

C. Los grupos japoneses de punk rock en esa época no estaban allí sólo para tocar música agresiva. Todos ellos tenían sus mensajes únicos con la sociedad.

C. B. ¿Por qué se cambió la alineación de la banda? ¿Es una nueva etapa?

C. Es difícil cuando nuestros antiguos miembros dejaron la banda. Pero lo tomé  como algo positivo. Al tener nueva sangre en la banda, nos convertimos mucho más creativos y activos ahora, como el ideal de banda en que creo.

C. B. ¿Cuál es el concierto más importante que nunca olvidarías? ¿Por qué?

C. Air Jam 2000 es inolvidable. Fue un gran festival de rock en Japón, que fue organizado por un grupo llamado Hi-Standard. Hemos tocado en este estadio de béisbol y nunca había tocado antes en esta clase de lugar así de grande, realmente lo disfruté muchísimo. Y también el evento fue muy significativo musicalmente. Fue uno de esos primeros momentos en que la escena indie rock y la escena mainstream rock llegaron a estar juntos en un solo escenario.

C. B. ¿Cuál es su visión sobre la escena musical punk en todo el mundo en la actualidad?

C. Realmente es una pregunta difícil… Creo que el punk rock debe capturar los problemas de la sociedad y expresarlo musicalmente. En Japón, tras el reciente terremoto y las plantas de energía nuclear se vino abajo, hay más bandas que se volvieron muy politizadas. No se sabe muy bien cuál es el problema que tienen fuera de Japón, pero parece ser como si el punk rock estuviera volviendo a sus raíces.

C. B. ¿Conoces o has escuchado de alguna banda o músico latinoamericano? (Si su respuesta es no, ¿qué te gustaría saber de América Latina acerca de su música?)

C. Honestamente, no conozco alguna banda o músico de América Latina. Pero si hay buenas bandas de punk rock en Latinoamérica, ¡quiero escucharlos! Tengo curiosidad de saber cómo suenan (Risas).

C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus planes para este año?

C. Este año está casi a medio terminar y hemos estado muy ocupados tocando en diversos shows. Pero queremos lanzar un nuevo álbum pronto.

C. B. El director de cine Sogo Ishii es un escritor punk de cine japonés. ¿Cuál es la opinión que usted tiene de él?

C. Creo que es uno de los pocos directores de cine que tendría películas punk. Yo lo respeto mucho.

C. B. Nuevamente, muchas gracias por esta entrevista y me gustaría que enviaras un saludo a nuestros oyentes en Colombia y América Latina.

C. No hay de qué. Yo nunca he estado en América Latina y honestamente no sé mucho sobre la escena musical allí. Pero estoy muy feliz de tener este tipo de oportunidad de estar en el programa de radio en Colombia. Sería interesante si pudiéramos ir allá algún día para tocar delante de ustedes. ¡Gracias por confiar en nosotros! ¡Gracias!

Tokyo. 1988. Two guys move in their skates tables going somewhere. It was the end of a decade shaped by the fight between pop vs. heavy metal music, between the underground (indie) vs. commercial (mainstream) bands, a decade where music excesses were charging your bill forming a new revolution in the field of punk which met after as grunge. And in the great capital of the Rising Sun Nation, Comi and Isobe, punk fans and skaters, were preparing the skeleton of what would be after a couple of years in this great band that will thrive like a phoenix to circumstances. Abnormals continues unabated in this wave of Japanese hardcore punk and new wave melodies and aggressive riffs that remind us that punk is not dead it just moved a while to germinate in the Asian archipelago to shape new groups that are currently playing around the world. Comi, vocal made cry, and Isobe, the first guitarist, were putting together this structure with visceral sounds to darkcore and some rockabilly. Now, Abnormals is promoting his 5^th studio album, Holy Blind (2011, PopGroup Recordings), whose current members accompanying Commission: Hagi (bassist) Yuri and Kiyo, guitarrists, and the drums by Masato. Since 1999, Abnormals has been blessed not only musical of that year launched its first self-titled album but also being the opening act of the legendary The Misfists, and then, other bands like Yellow Machine Gun, Zeke, and recently, Stupids (UK) have made them deservedly earn a place on the world stage hardcore punk. Therefore, Comi decided to accept our invitation and he wants to hear good Latin American punk and someday his unforgettable performance at the Air Jam with their new lineup when its former members had resigned. Does his future? Keep punking and rocking in anywhere on the planet.

Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much to attend us in this interview for Colombia and Latin America. Tell us (briefly), how did you met to play together?

Comi. Hey, how are you doing? Thank you. Here I’m going to talk about how I ended up forming Abnormals. When I was 18 years old, I was into skateboarding. With friends whom I met through skateboarding, we decided to do something interesting which was to play music together. When we started playing music, we weren’t that serious about it. But as we went to see a lot of punk rock shows and we became more serious about playing and composing songs and started bringing our demo tapes to different rock venues and to people who were in those punk rock bands in order to get ourselves gigs. That’s how it all started off.

C. B.What are your biggest music influences?

C. We got influenced by The Misfits, The Damned, The Cramps, and so on. Basically, I love melodious, aggressive, dark and heavy rock music.

C. B. What topics inspire to compose the songs?

C. I get inspired by all sorts of things, but most of times the inspiration comes from inside of me. I create song to transcend my feelings in order to face and deal with myself.

C. B. When the band was founded, as was the music scene in Tokyo?

C. When Abnormals was formed the alternative rock music was dominating the scene in Tokyo. But somehow a lot of bands also had been influenced by Japanese hard-core music.

C. B. What was the social activity of punk in the 70’s and 80’s in Japan?

C. The Japanese punk rock bands around that time were not only there to play aggressive music. They all had their unique messages towards society.

C. B. Why the formation changed in the band? Is a new stage?

C. It was difficult when our old members left the band. But I took to in a positive way. By having new blood in the band, we became creative and active now as a band I believe.

C. B. What is the most important concert that you never forgive? Why?

C. Air Jam 2000 is unforgettable. It was a big rock festival in Japan which was hosted by a band called Hi-Standard. We played at this baseball stadium and had never played at this kind of big venue before so we really enjoyed it. And also the event was really meaningful musically. It was one of the first moment that indie rock scene and mainstream rock scene came cross over.

C. B. What is your vision about the punk music scene around the world in the present day?

C. It’s really a difficult question… I think puck rock should capture the problems of the society and express it musically. In Japan, after the recent earthquake and nuclear energy plants broke down, there are more bands became political. I don’t really know what problem they all have outside of Japan; it seems to be like punk rock is getting back to its roots.

C. B. Did you know or did you hear any Latin America band or musician? (If your answer is no, what would you like to know of Latin America about your music?)

C. Honestly, I don’t really know bands or musicians in Latin America. But if there are good punk rock bands in Latin America, I want to listen to them!!! I’m curious how it sounds like (Lol).

C. B. What are your plans for this year?

C. This year is almost half done and we’ve been busy playing different live show. But we want to release a new album!

C. B. Film director Sogo Ishii is a Japanese punk film writer, which is the opinion you have on?

C. I think he is one of the few movie directors that would take punkie movies. I respect him a lot.

C. B. Again, thank you very much for this interview and I would like you send a greeting to our listeners in Colombia and Latin America.

C. You’re very welcome. I’ve never been to Latin America and honestly don’t know too much about music scene there. But I’m quite happy to get this kind of opportunity to be on the radio program in Colombia!!! It would be exciting if we could come there one day to play in front of you guys! Thanks for having us!!!
