Desde Beijing, Re-Tros nos habla sobre sus orígenes y sus deseos de nutrirse con el intercambio cultural para consolidar la escena musical en su país. – From Beijing, Re-Tros spoke about their origins and wishes to nurture cultural exchange to strengthen the music scene in his country.

La milenaria cultura china, la cual dio sus frutos al resto de la humanidad, nos deja entrever que poco a poco este dragón dormido está despertando de su letargo. En ese sentido, la escena musical está tomando fuerza a pesar que aún deben superar ciertos desafíos. Re-Tros (Rebuilding The Rights of Statues) es de esas bandas que quieren que su música contribuya a ese despertar. Este trío de músicos intelectuales fundado en la capital china en 2003 está conformado por Hua Dong, quien estudió música y arte en Alemania, junto con su amiga Liu Min en el aporte creativo y las cuerdas, y Ma Hui en la percusión. Su primer álbum (Watch Out! Climate Has Changed, Fat Mum Rises…, por Sky Modern Records) les ayudó a abrir las puertas a diversos países como Australia y Estados Unidos en estos dos últimos años. Ahora, por primera vez su líder aceptó darnos esta entrevista para un medio hispano en el que, a pesar de desconocer la cultura latina, quedó admirado del trabajo del compositor y guitarrista de The Mars Volta, de origen puertorriqueño, por lo que su sueño es alimentarse de la gran variedad de culturas que conviven en este planeta.

Colectivo Bunka. Muchas gracias por aceptar esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica. Cuéntenos (brevemente), ¿cómo se reunieron ustedes para tocar juntos?

Re-Tros. Bueno, conocí a Liu Min en la ciudad de Nanjing en 2001, mi ciudad natal, cuando ella dejó de tocar con su ex banda. Después de que llegamos a Beijing a mediados de 2002 para formar nuestra propia banda, un amigo mío me presentó a nuestro baterista Ma Hui. Y así fue como formamos Re-Tros en 2003 y comenzamos a escribir nuestra propia música.

C. B. ¿Cómo fue la historia del nombre de la banda? ¿Qué querían reconstruir?

R. Realimente es un juego de palabras, hay dos significados diferentes si usted lee el nombre de nuestra banda en chino: La reconstrucción de los derechos de las estatuas o Los derechos de las estatuas en reconstrucción. Estamos tratando de expresar algunas actitudes fuertes y resistentes a través de un nombre tan largo.

C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus mayores influencias musicales?

R. Algunas bandas de la movida post-punk/new wave de los años 70 como Brian Eno, Joy Division, Gang of Four, Bauhaus, Television, Siouxsie & The Banshees, etc. También algunas bandas indies/experimental nos han inspirado mucho por ejemplo Battles, Blonde Redhead, Animal Collective, PVT…

C. B. ¿Qué temas les inspiran para componer las canciones?

R. Bueno, actualmente éramos como la voz de fondo para algún tipo de historias; es como la expresión de una respuesta objetiva y clara a algunos acontecimientos políticos o sociales y lo que más me llama la atención es la reacción de la gente que se expresa ante esos eventos. Así es como yo escribo las canciones.

C. B. ¿Cuál es su visión sobre la escena musical indie china en todo el mundo en la actualidad?

R. Bueno, el ambiente de la escena musical independiente en China ha estado tomando un espacio significativo durante los últimos años y, en general, está mejorando, pero todavía no tienen un buen antecedente musical como sí sucedió hace muchos años en el extranjero. Como resultado, nuestras bandas chinas necesitan un tiempo para mejorarnos a nosotros mismos; para ser honesto, no hemos logrado una tendencia musical o cultural completa fuerte en el medio en China.

C. B.  ¿Cómo fue su experiencia tocando en los Estados Unidos?

R. ¡Increíble! La audiencia estuvo súper emocionada cuando tocamos en vivo y estaba 100% seguro de que algunos de ellos quedaron bastante sorprendidos por nuestra música. De hecho, nos gustaría tocar en diferentes países, conocer diferentes públicos, sentir las diferentes culturas y ser tocados por diferentes puntos de vista.

C. B. ¿Conoces o ha escuchado alguna banda o músico latinoamericano? (Si su respuesta es no, ¿qué le gustaría saber de América Latina acerca de su música?)

R. Lo siento, pero me temo que no tengo ni idea acerca de las bandas latinas de Estados Unidos hasta el momento, pero me encanta un músico llamado Omar A. Rodríguez López de Puerto Rico. Era muy conocido por ser el guitarrista de The Mars Volta y él es un increíble compositor. Él escribió y cantó canciones en inglés o español, cuando grabó sus discos como solista. ¡Este chico es un genio!

C. B. ¿Cuál es su opinión sobre la evolución del rock en China?

R. Como lo dije antes, el conjunto independiente y la escena de la música rock en China está cada vez mejor. Hay un número creciente de festivales de música que está dando más oportunidades a las bandas jóvenes chinas para mostrar su música y permitir que se dé más audiencia, es una contribución al entorno musical. Mientras tanto, junto con la difusión de información a través de Internet, los jóvenes grupos chinos pueden obtener la información más fresca sobre música en el extranjero; por lo tanto se puede escuchar todo tipo de bandas en China, tocando varios géneros, aunque es posible que no maduren lo suficiente pero todavía puede verse que están mejorando, lo cual es bonito.

C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus planes para este y el próximo año?

R.   Bueno, estamos trabajando ahora mismo en ensayar nuevas cosas para nuestro siguiente álbum y grabarlo en Nueva York alrededor de 2 o 3 meses. Y estaríamos participando en un festival musical en Kabul el próximo mes, estamos muy emocionados por este loco y apasionante viaje.

C. B. Finalmente, ¿cuál es su mensaje que le quieren dejar a sus fans?

R. Queremos que escuchen cuidadosamente nuestro disco y vayan a conocernos, por supuesto (Risas). Estamos seguros que encontrarán una especial y particular manera de cómo nos presentamos en nuestros shows en vivo, y si están interesados en nuestras letras, encontrarán oculta una historia. The ancient Chinese culture, which paid off the rest of humanity, we hinted that gradually this sleeping dragon is awakening from its slumber. By the way, the music scene is taking strong despite still must overcome certain challenges. Re-Tros (Rebuilding The Rights of Statues) is one of those bands who want their music contributes to that awakening. This trio of musicians intellectuals founded in Beijing in 2003 is headed by Hua Dong, who studied music and art in Germany, along with her friend Liu Min in the creative arrangement and strings, and Ma Hui as drummer. Their first album (Watch Out! Climate Has Changed, Fat Mum Rises… by Modern Sky Records) helped them open the door to various countries like Australia and the United States in the last two years. Now, for the first time their leader agreed to give us this interview for a Hispanic media in which, despite he doesn’t know the Latino culture, he was became a fan about the work of Puerto Rican composer and guitarist of The Mars Volta, so his dream is to feed of the wide variety of cultures living on this planet.

Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much to attend us in this interview for Colombia and Latin America. Tell us (briefly), how did you met to play together?

Re-Tros. Well, I met Liu Min in my hometown Nanjing in 2001 when she came to perform with her ex-band. After that we came to Beijing around 2002 to form our own band, and a friend of mine introduced drummer Ma Hui to me. And then we formed Re-Tros in 2003 and started to write our own music.

C. B. What is the history of the name of the band, who wants to rebuild?

R. Actually it’s like a word game; there are two different meanings if you read our band’s name in Chinese: Rebuilding the rights of statues or The rights of rebuilding statues. We are trying to express some strong and tough attitudes through such a long name.

C. B. What are your biggest music influences?

R. Some post-punk/new wave bands from 70’s, such as Brian Eno, Joy Division, Gang of Four, Bauhaus, Television, Siouxsie & The Banshees, etc, Also some Indie/Experimental band inspired us very much as well, such as Battles, Blonde Redhead, Animal Collective, PVT…

C. B. What topics inspire to Re-Tros to compose the songs and the lyrics?

R. Actually we were like the background voice for some kind of stories, because for me, it’s like the expression of a clear and objective answer to some political or social events and what’s attractive to me more is the reaction of people who expresses themselves to those events. That’s how I write songs.

C. B. What is your vision about the Chinese Indie music scene around the world?

R. Well, the environment of independent music scene in China has taken place during the last few years, and generally speaking, it’s getting better, but we still don’t have such a good music background as what happened overseas many years ago, as a result, we Chinese bands need some time to improve ourselves, to be honest, we haven’t got complete music trend or cultural atmosphere in China.

C. B. How was your experience playing in the United States?

R. Was awesome! The audience was super exciting when we performed and I was 100% sure that some of them were pretty surprised at our music. Actually we’d love to perform in different countries, meet different audiences, feel different cultures and be touched by different views.

C. B. Did you know or did you hear any Latin America band or musician? (If your answer is no, what would you like to know of Latin America about your music?)

R. Sorry, but I’m afraid that I have no idea about any Latin America bands so far, but I really love a musician called Omar A. Rodriguez Lopez from Puerto Rico. He was well known as the guitarist of The Mars Volta and he is an amazing composer as well. He wrote and sang songs in English or Spanish when he recorded his solo albums. This guy is a genius!

C. B. What is your opinion about the evolution of rock in China?

R. Just like I said, the whole independent and rock music scene in China is getting better, the growing number of music festivals gives more opportunities to those young Chinese bands to show their music and let more audience know them, it’s a contribution to the whole music environment. Meanwhile, along with the spreading of information through internet, young Chinese bands can get the freshest music information from overseas, thus, you can hear all kinds of bands in China, they play lot types of music, although they might not mature enough, we still can see they are improving which is nice.

C. B. What are your plans this year?

R. Well, now we are working on rehear some new stuff for our next album and will record it in NYC in 2 or 3 months’ time. And we may join a music festival in Kabul next month; we are very exciting of this crazy trip.

C. B. What is the message we want to give their followers?

R. We want them to listen to our album carefully and come to see our lives of course, (Lol), we’re sure that they will find a special kind of performance in our live shows, and if they are interested in our lyrics, they will «see» a drama from that.
