Una de las bandas que estará en el gran cartel de este famoso evento que se organiza en los albores de la primavera texana, en la ciudad de Austin, sin duda es este talentoso trío rockero de Seúl. Galaxy Express han asumido en serio pero con mucha alegría ser embajadores del rock surcoreano por todo el mundo desde que Lee Ju-Hyun (voz y bajo), Park Jong-Hyun (voz y guitarra) y Kim Hee-Kwon (batería) se presentaran ellos mismos como “una banda de alto octanaje.” Es uno de los grupos más reconocidos no sólo a nivel internacional sino además por la escena de su país. De hecho, desde el 2009 han ganado simultáneamente pero con contundencia los Korean Music Awards como Banda del Año, Álbum de Rock del Año y Canción Rock del Año. Aunque esta será su tercera presentación en Austin, en realidad es la primera vez que realizan una gran gira por los Estados Unidos, donde tocarán en ciudades como San Francisco, Las Vegas, Chicago, entre otras. Colectivo Bunka. Les agradecemos que nos hayan concedido esta entrevista para Colectivo Bunka. En pocas palabras, ¿cómo se formó la banda?
Ju-Hyun. Jong-Hyun y yo habíamos tocado en bandas de punk antes de que empezáramos Galaxy Express. Yo vi a Jong-Hyun en un concierto en Seúl una noche donde tocaron algunos covers de The Ramones y canciones clásicas de rock coreano. Creo que realmente fue genial. La banda a la que pertenecía estaba en ese momento a punto de desintegrarse debido a que algunos de los miembros tuvieron que prestar su servicio militar, algo que es obligatorio para todos los hombres coreanos. Así que llamé a Jong-Hyun y le pregunté si quería formar un grupo nuevo. Dijo que sí, y de ese modo comenzó Galaxy Express. Eso ocurrió en el año 2006.
C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus mayores influencias musicales?
Ju-Hyun. Nos encanta demasiado el Rock ‘n’ Roll Clásico occidental y la música punk. Y nos gusta la música psicodélica coreana de vieja guardia.
C. B. Durante siete años han estado tocando juntos. ¿Cómo ha sido la evolución de la escena coreana de rock durante ese tiempo?
Jong-Hyun. La escena rockera de Corea es pequeña, pero las cosas están mejorando. Ahora hay muchas más bandas surgiendo y tocando, y muchos más estilos de música que se están desarrollando. También, hay más bandas haciendo giras por toda Corea así como en el exterior. Y también ahora, puedes encontrar muchos festivales musicales por todo el país.
C. B. ¿Cómo describirían el sonido de la banda?
Ju-Hyun. Tocamos un rock ‘n’ roll salvaje y ruidoso, mezclado con punk y música psicodélica.
C. B. ¿Pueden hablarnos de su nuevo álbum? ¿Qué canción les gusta más del nuevo álbum?
Jong-Hyun. Nuestro nuevo álbum homónimo fue escrito después de nuestra gira de primavera en los Estados Unidos en el 2012. Empezamos a grabar el álbum en agosto y terminamos a finales de octubre. Con nuestro anterior álbum, “Wild Days” (2010), decidimos que queríamos escribir, grabar y lanzar el álbum en el lapso de un mes. Después de hacer eso, fue genial poder tomarnos nuestro tiempo con el nuevo álbum. Creo que este disco tiene más variedad que los trabajos anteriores porque hemos tenido tiempo de profundizar en todas las diferentes ideas que teníamos en mente.
Ju-Hyun. Mi canción favorita del nuevo álbum es «Horongbul». Empieza bastante simple, pero de repente estalla en una potente canción de rock.
C. B. Este año tocarán en el SXSW. ¿Cómo se están preparando para su show en el festival más importante de los Estados Unidos?
Jong-Hyun. Este será nuestro tercer año consecutivo para tocar en el SXSW. Es nuestro festival favorito en el mundo, y esperamos poder regresar al festival por mucho tiempo. Jong-Hyun. Sólo conocemos a Ricky Martin. No somos fans de su música, ¡pero es un bailarín infernal! Estoy seguro de que hay muchísimas grandes bandas de rock en toda Latinoamérica. Esperamos poder ver algún día tocar algunas de ellas.
C. B. En la historia del Galaxy Express, ¿Cuál ha sido el concierto más importante que nunca olvidarán?
Jong-Hyun. Para mí, fue nuestra presentación oficial en el SXSW 2011. Era nuestra primera vez que tocábamos en los Estados Unidos. Tuvimos un público muy receptivo y el espectáculo fue muy divertido.
Ju-Hyun. Todos ellos.
C. B. ¿Qué bandas coreanas pueden recomendarnos?
Ju-Hyun. Apollo 18, Jambinai, Pavolv y algunas bandas coreanas que están haciendo buena música. Deberías revisarlas cuando puedas.
C. B. Finalmente, ¿Cuál es su mayor sueño?
Ju-Hyun: Seguir haciendo buena música juntos y ser capaces de recorrer el mundo compartiendo con la gente.

One of the bands that will be on the big poster of this famous event that is organized in the beginning of Texan spring, in the city of Austin, it is undoubtedly this talented trio rocker from Seoul. Galaxy Express have taken seriously but with a lot of joy to be worldwide ambassadors of Korean rock since Ju-Hyun Lee (vocals & bass), Park Jong-Hyun (vocals & guitar), and Kim Hee-Kwon (drums) were presented themselves as «a high octane rock band.» It is one of the most recognized not only internationally but also the scene of his country. In fact, since 2009 have won simultaneously but with forcefulness the Korean Music Awards as Band of the Year, Rock Album of the Year and Rock Song of the Year. Although this will be his third appearance in Austin, really it’s the first time that they will do a bigger USA tour, where they will play in cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas, Chicago, among others. A trio that belongs on the major league of international music who humbly accepted our invitation, but also they want to dream to play in the Latin American stages for future.
Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much for granting us this interview for Colectivo Bunka. Briefly, how did the band form?
Ju-Hyun. Jong-Hyun and I both played in punk bands before we started Galaxy Express. I saw Jong-Hyun play at concert in Seoul one night where he played some covers of The Ramones’s songs and old Korean rock songs. I thought it was really cool. The band I was in at the time was about to break up because some of the members had to do their Korean military service, something that is mandatory for all Korean males. So I called up Jong-Hyun and asked him if he wanted to make a new group together. He said “yes,” and that was the start of Galaxy Express. That happened in 2006.
C. B. What are your biggest musical influences?
Ju-Hyun. We like a lot of old Western rock ‘n’ roll and punk music. And we like old Korean psychedelic music too.
C. B. You’ve played together for seven years now. How has Korea’s rock scene evolved during that time?
Jong-Hyun. Korea’s rock scene is small, but things are getting better. There are a lot more bands now, and a lot more styles of music being played. There are a lot more bands touring throughout Korea and overseas as well. There are lots of festivals now too.
C. B. How would you describe your band’s sound?
Ju-Hyun. We play wild and loud rock ‘n’ roll mixed with punk and psychedelic music.
C. B. Can you tell us about your new album? Which song do you like best from the new album?
Jong-Hyun. Our new self-titled album was written after our spring 2012 USA tour. We started recording the album in August and finished it at the end of October. With our previous album, 2010’s «Wild Days, we decided we wanted to write, record, and release the album all in the span of one month. After doing that, it was great to be able to take our time with the new album. I think this album has more variety on it than our previous releases because we had time to flesh out all the different ideas we had.
Ju-Hyun. My favorite song on our new album is «Horongbul.» It starts off pretty simple, but then explodes into a powerful rock song.
C. B. This year you will play at SXSW. How are you preparing to play at the most important festival in America?
Jong-Hyun: This will be our third straight year to play at SXSW. It’s our favorite festival in the world, and we hope we can keep returning to the festival for a long time. Our first time at SXSW was amazing, and last year was even better. We’re certain this year is going to be a blast as well.
C. B. What is your live show like? What songs will you play in Austin at SXSW 2013?
Ju-Hyun. Our live show is like a volcano. It’s hot and explosive with lots of rock being shot up into the air!
Jong-Hyun. We’ll be playing a lot of songs off our new album at SXSW. We’ll be playing some of our older songs too like «Jungle the Black», it’s one of our most popular tracks in Korea, and people in the U.S. really enjoyed it on our previous tours too.
C. B. What are your expectations for your upcoming tour in the U.S.?
Jong-Hyun. We’re expecting to have a lot of fun! This will be the biggest tour we’ve ever done. We’ll be playing 28 shows between March 7 and April 6. We’re excited to play with new bands and to meet lots of new people.
C. B. Do you know about any Latin American bands or musicians?
Jong-Hyun. We only know about Ricky Martin. We’re not fans of his music, but he’s a hell of a dancer! I’m sure there are lots of great rock bands throughout Latin America. I hope we can see some of them play one day.
C. B. In the history of Galaxy Express, what has been the most important concert that you will never forget?
Jong-Hyun. For me, it was our official showcase at SXSW in 2011. It was our first time to play in the United States. We had a really receptive audience and the show was really fun.
Ju-Hyun. All of them.
C. B. What Korean bands can you recommend to us?
Ju-Hyun. Apollo 18, Jambinai, and Pavolv are some Korean bands that are making cool music. You should check them out if you can.
C. B. What is your biggest dream?
Ju-Hyun. To keep on making good music together and to be able to tour around the world sharing it with people.
