Última parte del Logbook Bunka sobre el SXSW 2013 a cargo de nuestro corresponsal Ric Quintanilla. – Last part of this for amazing Logbook Bunka about SXSW 2013 made by Ric Quintanilla.

Día Tres.

Después de una mañana llena de acontecimientos mientras conducía por Austin, finalmente llegó la hora para ir al Elyseum. Luego de 2 horas de espera en la fila, las puertas se abrieron inmediatamente. A medida que pasaba el tiempo, más y más rostros familiares se reunían en el lugar. Los grupos llegaron y nos dejaron disfrutar del aire fresco de la noche texana llena del bullicio de la emoción de los espectadores.

Poco a poco íbamos ingresando y rápidamente me dirijo a la mesa donde está la mercancía para ver lo que podía haberme perdido el día anterior, entre ellas la camiseta oficial Un rápido «hola» a todos los presentes y luego, a buscar un buen lugar y a organizar mi equipo.

Kao=S retornó al Japan Nite y fue el primer grupo en tocar su mezcla de lo tradicional, con sus instrumentos japoneses y la guitarra acústica. Kaori, Shuji, Jack, y a partir de este año, Daisuke, hicieron otro maravilloso y conmovedor arreglo tanto de la música como de la puesta en escena en el que logró sacudir nuestra euforia. ¡Fue genial ver nuevamente a este grupo!

¡Pirates Canoe pudieron estar en la tarima! Este trío por fin pudo llegar a la ciudad al final del jueves; su alma bluegrass tiene un sonido dulce. Sin flashes, sin explosión, algo sencillo, sincero y suave. Aunque soy un rockero en el fondo, no estuve saltando con ellos cuando escuchaba su repertorio en vivo. Al igual que con Kao=S, Pirates Canoe encontró ese lugar en el fondo de mi ser por lo que decidí relajarme y disfrutar de sus canciones así como de su puesta en escena.

¡JOSY, JOSY, JOSY! En años pasados estas chicas estuvieron en el Japan Nite Tour, pero no en el SXSW. Pero este año lo lograron y nos dieron una dosis de alta energía. ¡Y estamos muy agradecidos por ello! Sépalo o no, el Japan Nite comenzó como una noche de bandas femeninas llamada Japan Girls, y fue dominada por todas las bandas de chicas tocando punk y rock. Así, ellas retornaron ese espíritu de los inicios de este festival y de repente, ¡sacudieron todo el recinto!

Jake Stone Garage también arribaron a tiempo. Ellos vinieron a tocar viajando desde muy lejos. Este trío de hard rock tuvo el poder de detener el tiempo. El público era como masilla en sus manos y luego interpretaron su versión de «Smells Like Teen Spirit», ¡quienes nos clavaron una flecha a todos nosotros! Sus rostros se fundieron en una sola expresión. Y a pesar que hicieron un monumental esfuerzo por el agotamiento del viaje debido a las tormentas de viento en Japón, no lo demostraron en su show. Tal vez se alimentaron de la furia y de la energía de la audiencia por lo que fueron el grupo más poderoso de la noche.

Chihiro Yamazaki + Route 14 Band tenían la tarea de mantener la energía dejada por Jack Stone Garage,  ¡y lo lograron! Con su potente trompetista más su sonido ligero y juguetón fue una perfecta transición que elevó los ánimos. Me encuentro sentado aquí escuchándolos y respondiéndoles con una gran sonrisa en mi cara. Esos sonidos tocan felizmente mis sentimientos fluyendo a través de mí, escuchándolos concentradamente.

Luego vino Charan Po Rantan, este grupo formado por las hermanas y un amigo de la secundaria quien tocaba la batería. No se confunda amigo lector, ya que suena un poco parecido a los últimos años del grupo The Akabane Vulgars on Strong Bypass, ¡pero son muy diferentes! Koharu toca un acordeón y su hermana Momo, quien llevaba un hermoso cerdito de peluche, canta sus canciones compuestas por juegos de palabras. Incluso con la barrera del idioma me di cuenta que esas colas que daban vueltas y vueltas al ritmo de su música, ¡fue un verdadero complot en su show! He visto suficiente espectáculos japoneses de variedades traducidos para entender que los japoneses les fascinan componer y cantar sus juegos de palabras.

Y cerrando la noche, estuvo en la tarima Four Minutes to Midnight. Este grupo es una mezcla entre EE.UU. y Japón, con 2 integrantes oriundos de ambos países. Y tuvieron un gran espectáculo cargado de mucha energía con su mezcla de rock pop. Para mí, su secreto pudo ser que tenían algo de los Red Hot Chili Peppers en lo que pude apreciar, por lo que esta banda tendrá grandes cosas para el 2013.

A medida que los tragos de la noche hacían efecto, me dirijo a la mesa donde estaban exhibidas las mercancías de las bandas para charlar un poco y de paso, felicitar a las bandas. Y de esa forma, el Japan Nite en el SXSW había llegado a su fin. Audrey Kimura, Tokio Boot Up, y todo el mundo involucrado en la organización Japan Nite armaron uno de los mejores carteles este año. Y no fui el único que lo dijo, hubo mucha gente que les he oído decir algo similar. Después de 8 horas de estar en este evento ya estaba agotado y hambriento.

Día Cuatro.

Quería ver una vez más la banda de pop de Taiwán que había estado escuchando el pasado viernes, pero el conjunto WonFu estaba peligrosamente cerca del del show del Japan Nite. Asi que investigué y descubrí que ellos tendrán un show especial con Cosmos People y Peggy Hsu en la Asociación Internacional Estudiantil de Taiwan, en el campus de la UT el sábado.

Esta vez Cosmos People fueron capaces de poder tocar su show completo y compartir antídotos musicales con canciones mezcladas en mandarín e inglés. Después de un corto descanso y una breve premiación, Peggy Hsu y su banda subieron al escenario y le añadieron a su conmovedora voz a la mezcla en el Instituto Estudiantil. Otra corta pausa y cambio de tarima para el grupo final de la tarde.

El salón de baile estuvo a ras de la capacidad permitida. Ya era la hora del show de WonFu y su Funky Pop. Jóvenes y viejos moviéndose y cantando sus canciones por igual. Entonces, a mitad de camino rumbo al set, uno de los trabajadores del recinto se unió con WonFu en el escenario y le dedicó una serenata a su novia mientras la multitud lo vitoreaba. Al final de la canción, le pide matrimonio a su pareja en el escenario, declarando sus sentimientos hacia ella hincándose en rodillas, ¡la sala se enloquece! ¡Ninguna traducción era necesaria para este mágico momento! WonFu finalizó su show, y acompañado por Peggy y los chicos de Cosmos People Cosmos cerraron su grandiosa presentación con una canción en conjunto.

Y de esa forma, mi experiencia en el SXSW 2013 había llegado a un final feliz. Después de 3 noches en Austin, innumerables botellas de agua y recorriendo millas hacia el centro de la ciudad en bicicleta, ya estaba listo para regresar a casa y disfrutar dormir en mi propia cama.

Gracias a Pedro, Duvan y al Colectivo Bunka por permitirme cubrir estas bandas para su sitio web y espero poder cubrir oficialmente la K-pop Nite para la próxima vez. Nunca hay suficiente tiempo para ver todo y cada uno de los shows que quisiera ver, ¡pero siempre hay y habrá SXSW para los próximos años!

Day 3.

After an eventful morning driving around Austin, it was finally time to go to Elysium and wait in line 2 hours before the show and basically the doors open the same time. As time went on, more and more familiar faces gathered. The music groups arrived and left enjoying the cool Texan evening air filled with buzz of excitement.

Doors open and we are slowly filed in. I quickly make my way to the merchandise table to see what I might have missed the day before, like as the annual event t-shirt! A quick “Hi” to everyone there, and then, to the stage to camp out on my spot.

Returning Kao=s was the first J-band with their mixture of traditional Japanese instruments and acoustic guitar. Kaori, Shuji, Jack, and joining this year, Daisuke, put on another wonderful and moving arrangement of music and theater that could stir the emotions in anyone! It was great to see this group again!

Pirates Canoe made it! This trio got in late Thurs, but their soulful bluegrass has a sweet sound. No flash, no bang, just heartfelt, easy, and smooth.  While I am a rock guy at heart, I don’t see me skipping with them when they come through my play list. Just like with Kao=S, Pirates Canoe has found that spot deep down and just makes me want to slow down and enjoy whatever I am doing.

JOSY, JOSY, JOSY!!  Last years these girls did the Japan Nite tour, but not SXSW. But this year they made it and gave us a high energy treat! And we are thankful! As you may or may not know, Japan Nite started as Japan Girls Nite and was ruled by the all-girl punk and rock bands. And they brought the spirit back and rocked the house!

Jake Stone Garage also makes it in time. They came to play and they blew everyone away!  This hard rock trio was nonstop power the whole time. The audience was like putty in their hands and then played their version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and stick a fork in us, we were done! They melted everyone’s faces off.  For also being forced late from the wind storms in Japan, they didn’t show it. And maybe they fed on that anger because this was the most powerful set of the night.

The Chihiro Yamazaki + Route 14 Band had the task of fallowing JSG and did a great job. Their trumpet lead, light and playful sound was an awesome change up!  I find myself sitting here listen to them and grooving to them with a big smile on my face. This happy toe tapping feelings just come flowing over me as I listen to them.

Then, Charan Po Rantan came. Their line-up was the sisters and a high school friend playing the drums.  Don’t get confused, these sounds just like past years of The Akabane Vulgars on Strong Bypass, but they are very different! Koharu plays an accordion as her sister Momo carries a stuffed pig and sings their songs filled with wordplay. Even with a language barrier I could tell these tails they were spinning with music where a riot! I’ve watched enough translated variety shows to know the Japanese love their word play.

And closing out the night was Four Minutes to Midnight. This group is a US and Japan joint with 2 members from both countries.  And they had an energetic stage show with their mix of pop rock. To me, their secret could be that they had a very Red Hot Chili Peppers feel to me and they have big things in the works for 2013.

As the night wines down, I make my way over to the merchandise table to chat and congratulate the bands. And just like that, SXSW’s Japan Nite was over. Audrey Kimura, Tokyo Boot Up, and everyone involved in the Japan Nite organization put together one of the best line ups!  And I wasn’t the only one that said that, there were quite a few people that I overheard say something similar. After the 8 hours of this event I was exhausted and hungry!

Day 4.

I wanted to see one more pop band out of Taiwan I had been hearing a lot things about on Friday, but the WonFu’s set was dangerously close to over lapping with JapanNite and I found they were having a special show along with Cosmos People and Peggy Hsu on the UT campus from the Taiwanese International Student Association.

This time Cosmos People where able to play their full set and shared antidotes from the songs in mix of Mandarin and English. After a short break and door prizes Peggy Hsu and her band took the stage and added her soulful voice to the mix at the student center. Another short break and stage change for the final group of the afternoon.

With the Ballroom filled to capacity, it was time for WonFu and their Funky pop! Young and olds alike bobbing and singing with the songs. Then half way through the set, one of the event workers joined WonFu on stage and serenaded his girlfriend as the crowd cheered him on! As the song ends, he asks his significant other on the stage declares his feeling for her and goes down on one knee and a marry proposal, the room goes wild!  No translation was needed! WonFu finishes up their set, and joined by Peggy and the guys from Cosmos People and close out with an ensemble song.

And just like that, my SXSW 2013 experience was gone. After 3 nights in Austin, countless bottles of water, and miles crisscrossing downtown on my bicycle, I was ready to go home and sleep in my own bed.

Thank you to Pedro, Duvan, and Colectivo Bunka for letting me covers these bands for the website and I hope to make the official K-pop Nite next time! There never seems to be enough time to see everything and everyone I wanted to see, but there is always next year!
