Este dueto coreano estuvo en una gira por Inglaterra el mes pasado, quienes ahora en Seúl nos responden nuestras preguntas acerca de sus inicios y su brillante futuro musical. – This Korean duo was on tour in England last month, who are now in Seoul to answer our questions about their roots and brilliant musical future.

Otoño de 2012. Dos veteranos músicos de la escena indie se conocen en un bar en algún lugar de Seúl. Se emborrachan, conversan y planifican su futuro para seguir aportando sus habilidades musicales para el pequeño pero brillante movimiento musical en Corea del Sur. Al día siguiente, esos planes que surgieron entre botellas de alcohol y una velada animada de amigos se convirtió en lo que hoy es un binomio musical que recorren diversos escenarios llevando su música más allá de las fronteras: Dead Buttons.

Comandando la guitarra y una de las voces de la banda encontramos a Jihyun Hong quien con su compañero mestizo (mitad paraguayo y mitad coreano) Kanghee Lee (baterista y vocalista) nos muestran un sonido lleno de nostalgia occidental (punk, country, psicodélico y garaje rock) con minimalismo coreano en el que sus influencias musicales demarcan su camino, entre Oasis y Johnny Cash. Cabe mencionar que Lee había prestado el servicio militar obligatorio coreano por lo que una vez que regreso a la vida civil decidió prestar sus servicios para hacer música que alegre los corazones y los espíritus de todo el mundo.

El pasado mes de febrero, Dead Buttons lanzó su primer trabajo: Whoever You Are, el cual fue grabado en el pasado mes de diciembre. La crítica especializada no guardó elogios para este EP. Y gracias a ello, el dueto estuvo en una gira en mayo por varias ciudades y festivales en el Reino Unido, especialmente siendo invitados internacionales para el Liverpool Sound City Music Festival. Ahora que están de regreso en su casa, Dead Buttons nos concedió esta entrevista en las que son admiradores del rock argentino y boliviano.

Colectivo Bunka. Les damos las gracias por atendernos en esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica Latina. Brevemente cuéntenos un poco sobre las raíces de la banda; ¿Cómo se conocieron para luego tocar juntos?

Jihyun. Muchas gracias. Bueno, el teclista de una banda anterior donde había tocado antes me presentó a Kanghee en un bar. Realmente estábamos borrachos y en ese estado, nos dimos cuenta que teníamos varias ideas similares acerca de la música, por lo que al día siguiente empezamos juntos a fundar esta banda.

Kanghee. Recuerdo que conocí a Jihyun estando borracho y empezamos a hablar de música. Al día siguiente cuando me desperté ya estaba con él tocando y empezando este grupo.

C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus más grandes influencias musicales?

J. Johnny Cash.

K. Oasis.

C. B. ¿Qué temas les influencia componer sus nuevas canciones?

J. Ver películas, salir a dar largas caminatas, viajar por toda las influencias e inspirarme a componer nueva música.

K. A mí me inspiran leer libros y ver películas.

C. B. En su opinión personal, ¿cuál es su visión sobre la naciente escena rockera del K-music para llegar ser mejor difundida alrededor del mundo en la actualidad?

J. Creo que es fantástica. Ser capaz de compartir tu música en nuevos escenarios con gente nueva tiene un gran efecto en nosotros como músicos.

C. B. ¿Conocen o han oído algún artista o alguna banda de Latinoamérica? (Si su respuesta es no, ¿qué les gustarían conocer América Latina en cuanto a su música?)

J. Sé acerca de Los Enanitos Verdes y algunos otros músicos de Latinoamérica.

K. Soy un gran fan de Andrés Calamaro.

C. B. ¿Cuáles fueron sus expectativas durante su reciente gira por el Reino Unido?

J. Pudimos tocar los dos primeros conciertos de la gira en el Liverpool Sound City. Fueron muy buenos, las multitudes fueron impresionantes y los lugares fueron espectaculares. Luego, nos presentamos en Bristol, Southampton y Londres. En general, los shows fueron muy divertidos y todos disfrutaron.

C. B. ¿Qué artistas o bandas coreanas actualmente nos pueden recomendar?

J. The Veggers, Galaxy Express.

K. The Veggers, Billy Carter, Galaxy Express, Crying Nut.

C. B. ¿Qué planes tienen este año luego de su gira por Reino Unido?

J. Planeamos lanzar tres nuevos singles en los próximos meses. Sentimos cómo se nos erizó la piel de Dead Buttons cuando lanzamos nuestro EP debut Whoever You Are el pasado mes de febrero, por lo que estamos muy ansiosos por producir y lanzar un par de canciones más este año.

K. Quizás estaríamos tocando en Rusia en este verano, lo cual sería grandioso. Y a ambos nos encantaría hacer una gira por Suramérica algún día, pero no estoy seguro de cuándo sucederá. Originalmente soy paraguayo, por lo que sería realmente genial visitar mis raíces y otros maravillosos lugares de Suramérica.

C. B. ¿Cómo se imaginan la banda en un par de años, en el futuro?

J. Simplemente queremos seguir produciendo mejores canciones y álbumes más sólidos. Si podemos hacer eso, entonces cosas buenas pasarán para Dead Buttons.

C. B. Finalmente, ¿qué mensaje les darían a los fans alrededor del mundo, especialmente en Latinoamérica?

J. Esperamos poder verlos pronto en algún lugar del mundo. ¡Seguramente juntos tendremos una gran explosión musical

Fall 2012. Two veteran musicians from the indie scene meet in a bar somewhere in Seoul. They get drunk, discuss and plan their future to continue contributing their musical skills to the small but smart musical movement in South Korea. The next day, the plans that appeared between bottles of alcohol and an outgoing meeting of friends became true in a musical couple that touring for several scenarios taking their music beyond borders: Dead Buttons.

In the guitar and one of the voices of the band we find out Jihyun Hong who with his mixed partner (half Korean and half Paraguayan) Kanghee Lee (drummer and vocalist ) show a sound full of Western nostalgia (punk, country, psychedelic and garage rock) with Korean minimalism; their musical influences are tagged between Oasis and Johnny Cash. As a reminder, Lee had finished his mandatory Korean military service so once return to civilian life he decided to serve for a positive thing to play music for the joyful hearts and spirits around the world with Dead Buttons.

Last February, Dead Buttons has released their debut EP: Whoever You Are, which was recorded last December. The critics did not save praise for this EP. And as a result, the duo was on a tour of several cities and festivals in the UK on May, being especially as International Guests for Liverpool Sound City Music Festival. Now they are back at home, Dead Buttons granted us this interview in which they are fans of Argentine and Bolivian rock.

Colectivo Bunka. How did you meet and decide that you wanted to play music together?

Jihyun. The keyboardist in a previous band I played with introduced me to Kanghee. We got really drunk together, found out we had a lot of similar ideas about music, and started a band together the next day.

Kanghee. I remember getting really drunk with Jihyun and talking about music. The next day when I woke up I was in a band with him.

C. B. Who are your biggest musical influences?

J. Johnny Cash.

K. Oasis.

C. B. What influences you to write new music?

J. Watching movies, going for long walks, and traveling all influence and inspire me to write new music.

K. I get inspired by reading books and watching movies.

C. B. What’s your opinion about the K-rock music scene starting to become better known around the world these days?

J. I think it’s fantastic. Being able to share your music in new places with new people has a great effect on musicians.

C. B. Do you know any Latin American bands or musicians?  If not, is there anything you would like to know about Latin American music?

J. I know about Los Enanitos Verdes and some other musicians.

K. I’m a big fan of Andres Calamaro.

C. B. What were your expectations after UK tour?

J. We played the first two gigs of our tour on the weekend at Liverpool Sound City. They went really good, the crowds were awesome, and the venues were cool. Then, we have performed in Bristol, Southampton, and London. Really, the shows were fun and everyone enjoyed themselves.

C. B. What Korean bands do you recommend that people listen to?

J. The Veggers, Galaxy Express.

K. The Veggers, Billy Carter, Galaxy Express, Crying Nut.

C. B. What are your plans for after your UK tour?

J. We plan to release three new singles over the coming months. We feel like we just scratched the surface of Dead Buttons when we released our Whoever You Are EP in February, so we’re eager to get a few more songs out this year.

K. We may be playing in Russia in summer, which would be really cool! And we both would love to tour in South America at some point, but I’m not sure when that will happen. I’m from Paraguay originally, so it would be really cool to tour there and in other parts of South America.

C. B. How do you hope your band will continue to grow and develop in the future?

J. We want to just keep making better songs and stronger albums. If we can do that, then good things will happen for Dead Buttons.

C. B. Finally, what message do you have for music fans around the world, and especially in Latin America?

J. We hope to be able to meet you somewhere in the world soon. I’m sure we’ll have a blast together!
