Conversamos con Seiji Guitar Wolf quien participa en la película Fonotune. Anécdotas y recuerdos de la banda a su paso por Latinoamérica. – We spoke with Seiji’s Guitar Wolf who plays for Fonotune indie film about their memories and stories when have toured Latin America.

Este mes de junio Seúl se prepara para recibir con todos sus brazos abiertos a una leyenda musical que ha llevado por alto el rock japonés; al cierre de esta nota, Guitar Wolf se presentará este fin de semana en Corea del Sur una vez más por lo que la ansiedad de sus fans es evidente.

Pero más allá de eso, Guitar Wolf es un trio innovador en la dinámica escena musical. Han creado un estilo denominado por ellos mismos como Jett Rock desde 1987 en su ciudad natal Nagasaki, caracterizado por sus influencias con el Punk como The Ramones o 77 Punk mezclado con el sonido distorsionado del Garage. Por ello, su prolífica carrera está acompañada por un sin número de álbumes en estudio, splits, vinilos, singles, covers, tributos y soundtracks.

Sin embargo, el hecho triste de la banda fue la partida prematura de Billy Bass Wolf a la edad de 38 años el 31 de marzo de 2005 por un infarto. Aunque fue devastador, Guitar Wolf siguió adelante y sienten que su presencia sigue ahí en cada canción y en cada show. La alineación actual que acompaña a Seiji son Toru y U.G. quien ahora ocupa el honorífico puesto de bajista.

El cine es otra de las musas que Guitar Wolf se sienten atraídos. Desde 1997 la banda actuó en la película de John McCarthy, The Sore Losers (una adaptación de la vida del músico indie norteamericano Jack Oblivian). Pero con Wild Zero (Tetsuro Takeuchi, Japón 2000), el trio rockero logró una mayor popularidad no sólo por aparecer en el filme sino por componer y tocar todas las canciones que sirvieron como banda sonora y disco homónimo.

Ahora, Guitar Wolf está planeando su gira veraniega por Finlandia y Reino Unido y el respaldo y promoción del filme germano-japonés Fonotune dirigido por Fabian Huebner en el que participa Seiji junto con la bella Yuho Yamashita, Kasuhi Watanabe y los chicos de Electric Eel Shock. Seiji nos concedió esta corta entrevista en el que nos narra las anécdotas de sus dos shows en Argentina y Brasil y su deseo de volver a Latinoamérica.

Colectivo Bunka. Guitar Wolf ha estado tocando desde hace varios años en diversos escenarios. ¿Han hecho algún concierto en Latinoamérica? ¿Tiene algún plan para volver a tocar para sus fans latinoamericanos?

Guitar Wolf. Por supuesto, ya hemos tocado en Brasil y Argentina en dos ocasiones. Desafortunadamente, no creo que haya un plan para volver a tocar allá pronto.

C. B. ¿Cuál es su opinión personal acerca del J-rock en el mundo hoy día?

G. W. Honestamente no lo sé, pero el J-Rock está posicionado en la cúspide siempre y cuando Guitar Wolf esté allí.

C. B. ¿Hay alguna banda o músico latinoamericano que te gusta escuchar?

G. W. Autoramas.

C. B. Guitar Wolf ha estado tocando desde 1987. ¿Cuál es el secreto para mantenerse activo en la escena internacional de la música por mucho tiempo? Tienen fans de todas las diferentes generaciones y países que aman su música.

G. W. Power of Beer and Beast Vibrator. [N. del T.: se refiere a sus dos sencillos]

C. B. En la historia de la banda, ¿cuál ha sido el concierto más importante que nunca olvidarán y por qué les pareció tan memorable?

G. W. Hay muchos, pero el de Argentina es inolvidable. Antes de nuestro show, estábamos de pie al lado de la tarima. De repente, vimos mucho humo flotando alrededor. Pensé que era el humo usado como efecto especial en el escenario pero estaba equivocado. El salón estaba en un antiguo edificio y mientras la gente estaba emocionada bailando, se derrumbó el techo del edificio. Por suerte nadie resultó herido. El incidente hizo que la gente se emocionara mucho más. Pensé que la gente iba a quitarme mis botas y mi chaqueta de cuero durante el show. El espectáculo fue muy emocionante y sorprendente.

C. B. ¿Qué bandas asiáticas actuales le recomendarías a nuestra audiencia?

G. W. The King Brothers y The Let’s Go’s.

C. B. ¿Qué planes tiene Guitar Wolf para este año?

G. W. Bueno, en este verano Guitar Wolf tocará para un festival en Finlandia y recorrerá Reino Unido. Después, iré a los EE.UU. para rodar Fonotune. Voy a aparecer en la película.

C. B. De nuevo, muchas gracias por esta entrevista y nos gustaría que enviaras un saludo a nuestro público en Colombia y Latinoamérica.

On June, Seoul is preparing to welcome with open arms all to a musical legend that has been overlooked Japanese rock; at the deadline of this issue, Guitar Wolf will play their one more time this weekend in Korea, so the anxiety of their fans is obvious.

Beyond this news, Guitar Wolf has been an innovative trio in the Japanese dynamic music scene. They have created a music genre called Jett Rock since 1987 in their hometown Nagasaki, with a several musical influences as The Ramones or 77 Punk mixed with a heavy distortion sound from garage punk rock. Therefore, their prolific career is accompanied by some studio albums, splits, LPs, singles, covers, tributes and soundtracks.

However, the band has suffered a lost: the early death of Billy Bass Wolf (38) on March 31, 2005 by a heart attack. Although they were devastated, Guitar Wolf went ahead. Now, his spirit is still there in every song and every show. Now, this is the current line-up of the band: Toru, Seiji and U.G., who now holds the honorary bassist position.

Movie is another muse that Guitar Wolf is caught. Since 1997 the band played for the film directed by John McCarthy, The Sore Losers (an adapted story of the life of the American indie musician Jack Oblivian). But with Wild Zero (Tetsuro Takeuchi, Japan 2000), rocker trio achieved a greater popularity not only appearing on screen but composing and playing all the songs that served as the soundtrack and self-titled album.

Now, Guitar Wolf are planning their summer tour to Finland and UK, and also supporting and promoting the German-Japanese film Fonotune directed by Fabian Huebner. Seiji Guitar Wolf is in the official crew along Yuho Yamashita, Kasuhi Watanabe and Electric Eel Shock. Seiji gave us this short interview in which tells us the stories about his two concerts in Argentina and Brazil and his desire to return to Latin America.

Colectivo Bunka. Guitar Wolf has been playing for several years on many different stages. Have you been doing gigs in Latin America? Do you have any plans to play for Latin American audiences?

Guitar Wolf. Of course, we played in Brazil and Argentine twice. Unfortunately, there is no plan to come back soon though.

C. B. What is your personal opinion about J-rock’s place in the world today?

G. W. Honestly, I don’t know. But J-Rock is positioned at the top as long as Guitar Wolf is here.

C. B. Is there any Latin American band or musician you like listening to?

G. W. Autoramas.

C. B. Guitar Wolf has been playing since 1987. What is the secret to keep active in the international music scene for such a long time? You have fans from all different generations who love your music!

G. W. Power of Beer and Beast Vibrator.

C. B. In the history of the band, what has been the most important concert that you will never forget and why was it so memorable?

G. W. There are many, but the one in Argentine is unforgettable. Before our show, we were standing by at the side of the stage. Then, here was smoke floating around all of the sudden. I thought it was the smoke for the stage effect. But I was wrong. The concert hall was an old building. As the audience got excited and danced, the ceiling of the building collapsed and fell. Luckily, no one was hurt. The incident made people more excited. The show was extremely excited and amazing. I thought people were going to strip my boots and the leather jacket off from me.

C. B. What current bands from Asia would you recommend to our audience?

G. W. The King Brothers and The Let’s Go’s.

C. B. What plans does Guitar Wolf have this year?

G. W. In the summer, Guitar Wolf will be playing at the festival in Finland and touring UK. Then, I’ll go to the US to shoot the film. I’ll appear in the movie.
