Por primera vez en su vida artística, la agrupación surcoreana de noise rock psicodélico Juck Juck Grunzie está recorriendo Europa este verano, siendo invitados para el Glastonbury Festival. El Glastonbury Festival de este año será recordado no sólo por la masiva y continua afluencia de público este verano sino además por el debut de varias agrupaciones. Y una de ellas, con mucha emoción, debutó y ganó el más preciado tesoro: el gran aplauso al demostrar su contundente sonido noise rock. Un reflejo más de la creciente escena indie surcoreana fuera de sus fronteras. Por ello, la gira europea veraniega que lidera Juck Juck Grunzie es, ante todo, un gran sueño hecho realidad.

Con una gran influencia sonora del grunge de Nirvana, el cual le hicieron un merecido tributo con la recordada Hairspray Queen (Incesticide, 1992), este cuarteto floreció en el año 2007 en la escena underground de Seúl bajo la batuta vocal de Ahreum Lee (además de tecladista) y la guitarra de Jeehye Ham, quienes con su toque satírico y polémico empezarían a llamar realmente la atención en la muy conservadora sociedad surcoreana. De hecho, ellas aparecen solamente en ropa interior en ese tributo a la banda de Seattle, ya que el espíritu del punk ha sido su gran inspiración. De ese modo, Juck Juck Grunzie sería señalada como una provocadora banda en vivo que hipnotiza oídos y acapara miradas por más de tres años vistiendo extravagantes prendas, desde uniformes masculinos de fútbol hasta pijamas. En el 2011, con el ingreso del bajista Hyojeong Shim (Boong), la banda grabó su concierto en un club indie de Seul convirtiéndose en su primer EP: “Soundchecking”; en el 2012, la banda debutó en el Jisan Valley Rock Festival y, al año siguiente, realizaron su primera presentación internacional tocando en el Spring Scream Festival, en Taiwán.

“Psycho” (lanzado en noviembre del 2013) es su primer álbum y significó el renacimiento del grupo. De tocar solamente post-punk rock ahora son un cuarteto psicodélico noise rock en vivo con la incorporación de su actual baterista masculino Kyunghyun Lee en el 2014, quienes hasta la fecha siguen más unidos que nunca trabajando en componer, tocar y promover su música a los límites más allá de su imaginación.

Estando en esta emocionante gira europea, la cual empezó desde el pasado 25 de junio en el Glastonbury Festival tocando dos veces, la banda terminará su tour en Berlín (Alemania) con dos shows los días 1º y 4 de julio. Y durante esta pausa, Colectivo Bunka dialogó con ellos para conocer un poco más sobre su disco, la aparición de su vocalista para la famosa serie documental producida por la marca de ropa Vans, Living Off The Walls (2014), y su anhelo de probar la gastronomía latinoamericana.

Colectivo Bunka. ¿Cómo se conocieron y por qué decidieron tocar juntos?

Ahreum. Jeehye y yo éramos amigas y decidí que sería muy chévere empezar una banda con sólo chicas en ese momento. Eso fue en el 2007. Nuestro objetivo era hacer música cool y aparecer actuando situaciones divertidas. Y creo que todavía sigue siendo nuestro objetivo actualmente. Cuando eran los inicios de Juck Juck Grunzie, usábamos diferentes bajistas de sesión. Pero en el 2010 Boong ingresó a tocar el bajo con nosotras; y el año pasado ingresó como baterista oficial Kyunghyun a nuestra banda.

C. B. ¿Quiénes son sus mayores influencias musicales?

Jeehye. Cuando era una adolescente, solía oír mucha música de los 70. En ese momento mis hermanos mayores tenían varias revistas de rock y cassettes de cintas. Había leído las revistas y escuchado las cintas y me imaginé a mí misma ser en un futuro guitarrista.

C. B. ¿Qué temas inspiran a Juck Juck Grunzie para componer su música?

J. Generalmente hacemos música para tocar juntos improvisadamente. Y las cosas que imaginamos o que nos inspiran a veces son un poco extrañas como un payaso borracho, un asesino que mata a sus víctimas con una cuchara en una película de culto, o los sonidos de la cocción de nuestra comida favorita.

C. B. Cuéntanos un poco acerca de su álbum “Psycho”.

J. “Psycho” es nuestro primer álbum de estudio lanzado en el 2013. Con nuestro EP “Soundchecking” en el 2011, estábamos influenciados principalmente por noise rock, post-punk y grunge. Pero después de eso, recibimos más influencia de la música electrónica y el rock de los 70 por lo que definitivamente estos dos estilos nos inspiraron al producir “Psycho”.

C. B. ¿Cuál es tu opinión acerca de que la escena musical K-rock empiece a ser más conocida en todo el mundo en estos días?

J. Es muy bueno que en los últimos años las bandas surcoreanas indie hayan estado tocando en muchos conciertos en el exterior. No obstante, siguen siendo limitadas las oportunidades y las bandas necesitan una gran cantidad de dinero para hacer que los tours sucedan. Así que creo que necesitamos más canales para ayudar a introducir el rock de Corea a más personas en todo el mundo.

C. B. ¿Conoces algún bandas o algún músico latinoamericano? Si no, ¿hay algo que les gustaría saber sobre la música latinoamericana?

Boong. Nos encanta CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy). Los vimos presentarse en un festival en Corea. Son muy sexy y tienen una gran energía en el escenario.

C. B. Por primera vez ustedes se presentarán en el histórico Glastonbury Festival y también estarán de tour por otros países europeos este verano. ¿Cuáles son sus expectativas?

J. Estamos tan felices de ser invitados a un gran festival como como Glastonbury. ¡Nunca esperamos que esto iría a pasar! Estamos muy emocionados de comenzar nuestra gira y esperamos dar conciertos en Londres y Berlín después de nuestros shows en Glastonbury. Esta será nuestra primera gira y nuestra primera vez en Europa, por lo que deseo tener muchas anécdotas agradables, conocer a mucha gente cordial, escuchar un montón de nueva música, probar varios manjares deliciosos, y tal vez tener unos cuantos temas de conversación entre los miembros de la banda, ¡sólo por diversión y para tocar nuestros dedos de los pies!

C. B. ¿Qué otras bandas surcoreanas recomendarías que la gente debiera escuchar?

J. Creo que deberían conocer a Table People. Son de Seúl, pero la mitad de sus miembros son coreanos y la otra mitad estadounidenses. Su sonido es simple y un poco poppy, y además tienen divertidas líricas.

C. B. Cuando piensas en el futuro, ¿cómo ves que Juck Juck Grunzie siga creciendo?

A. Espero que en el futuro podamos seguir de gira por mucho más lugares. Ya hemos tocado en Taiwán, y estamos tocando en el Reino Unido y en Alemania. Y todavía hay muchos lugares por conocer que nos encantaría viajar y compartir nuestra música a más gente.

C. B. Por último, ¿tienes algún mensaje para los lectores Colectivo Bunka en Colombia?

A. Esperamos poder llegar a Colombia algún día para tocar con ustedes, conocerlos, ¡y comer muchos deliciosos platos colombianos! ¡Muchas gracias por leer sobre Juck Juck Grunzie! This year, Glastonbury Festival will be remembered not only for its massive crowds but also for amazing performances from lots of cool groups. For Juck Juck Grunzie, playing at this famed festival was a dream come true. And it was a very memorable way for the Korean group to start their European tour!

Originally formed as an all-female quartet, Juck Juck Grunzie made their live debut by playing a cover of “Hairspray Queen” (Incesticide, 1992) at a Nirvana tribute concert in Seoul in 2007. Wearing lingerie for their performance, the act quickly caught people’s attention in the Korean indie scene. In 2011, bassist Hyojeong Shim (Boong) joined the band and the group recorded their first EP, “Soundchecking”. In 2012, they performed at the Jisan Valley Rock Festival and the following year completed their first international tour by traveling to Taiwan to play at the Spring Scream Festival.

In November 2013, the group released their first full-length album, Psycho. And in December 2014, Kyunghyun Lee joined the band as their newest drummer and the act’s lone male member. The group started their European tour on June 25^th at Glastonbury and played at the festival twice. And this week they’ll be playing in London on June 30^th, and doing two shows in Berlin on July 1^st & July 4^th. Colectivo Bunka spoke with them before they started their tour about their music, about their feautured for Living off the Wall’s Vans documentary series, and their wish to try Latin American cuisine.

Colectivo Bunka. How did you meet and why did you decide to play music together?

Ahreum. Me and Jeehye were friends and decided it would be cool to start a band with only girls in it. That was back in 2007. Our goal was to make cool music and put on fun performances. And I think that’s still our goal today! When Juck Juck first began, we had a different bassist and drummer. Boong started playing bass with us from 2010, and Kyunghyun became our drummer last year.

C. B. Who are your biggest musical influences?

Jeehye. When I was a teenager, I often listened to ‘70s music. At that time my older brothers had a lot of rock magazines and tapes. I’d read the magazines and listen to the tapes and imagine myself one day being a guitar player.

C. B. What topics inspire Juck Juck Grunzie to write music?

J. Usually we make music by jamming together. And the things we imagine or that inspire us are sometimes a bit odd. It could be a drunken clown, a murderer who kills his victims with a spoon in a cult movie, or the sounds of cooking foods we love.

C. B. Tell us a little about your album «Psycho».

J. “Psycho” is our debut full-length album and it came out in 2013. With our 2011 “Soundchecking EP” we were predominantly influenced by noise rock, post-punk, and grunge music. But after that, we got more info electronic music and ‘70s rock so those two styles definitely inspired us when making “Psycho.”

C. B. What’s your opinion about the K-rock music scene starting to become better known around the world these days?

J. It’s great that Korean indie bands have been playing more and more overseas gigs in recent years. But the opportunities are still limited and bands need a lot of money to make the tours happen. So I think we need more channels to help introduce Korean rock music to more people around the world.

C. B. Do you know any Latin American bands or musicians? If not, is there anything you would like to know about Latin American music?

Boong. We love CSS. We saw them play at a festival in Korea. They’re really sexy and have great energy onstage.

C. B. You will play for the first time at the historic Glastonbury Festival and also in other European countries this summer. What are your expectations for your tour?

J. We’re so happy to be invited to such a great festival like Glastonbury! We never expected this would happen! We’re all really excited to start our tour and are looking forward to gigging in London and Berlin after we play at Glastonbury. This will be our first time touring in Europe, so I want us to have lots of enjoyable experiences, meet lots of nice people, hear lots of new music, try lots of delicious foods, and maybe have a few arguments amongst band members – just for fun and to key us on our toes!

C. B. What other Korean bands do you think people should check out?

J. I think people should check out Table People. They are based in Seoul, but half of their members are Korean and half are American. Their sound is simple and kind of poppy, and they have funny lyrics too.

C. B. When you imagine the future, how do you see Juck Juck Grunzie continuing to grow?

A. I hope in the future we can continue to tour in more and more places. We’ve already played in Taiwan, and we’re playing in the UK and Germany now. And there are still lots of more places we’d love to travel to and share our music to the people.

C. B. Finally, do you have any words for Colectivo Bunka readers in Colombia?

A. We hope we can come to Colombia one day to play for you, meet you, and eats lots of delicious Columbian dishes. Thanks so much for reading about Juck Juck Grunzie!
