Como novedad en la edición actual del SXSW, una banda proveniente del sudeste insular asiático estará presentando sus sonidos cargados de atmosferas indie rock pop en las que se han convertido en embajadores del movimiento musical indonesio desde su aparición en el año 2004 mientras sus miembros estudiaban juntos en Kuala Lumpur, Malasia: lightcraft.

Es muy interesante para nuestros oídos escuchar melodías de este grupo conformado por Imam Wisaya Surataruna como vocalista, guitarrista, tecladista y compositor; Safarilhaj Febrian Kiaidemak (guitarra líder, efectos y coros); el tecladista, programador y looper Enrico Prabowo Siek; y Yopi Santosa Sasmita comandando las baterías, percusión y coros. Y mucho más interesante saber que la escena indie de Jakarta está muy bien representada tanto en la región como en el exterior: Music Matters de Singapur, Liverpool Sound City en el Reino Inido, Canadian Music Week (Toronto) y Zandari Festa de Seúl, apareciendo en las diversas reseñas y coberturas musicales en medios de comunicación de alto perfil tanto en su país como en Malasia tales como CNN, Rolling Stone, Seventeen o Nylon. Así mismo, otra de las virtudes que lightcraft llama la atención de sus fans y de los medios es su alta conciencia ecológica ya que son embajadores de la ONG ambientalista Bersih Nyok! (¡Limpiemos!), cuya misión es educar ambientalmente a los habitantes de Jakarta a cuidar y vivir en una ciudad menos contaminada, ¡incluso ellos mismos barren las calles y participan en jornadas de limpieza!

Con todas estas credenciales, no es de extrañar que la recompensa sea presentarse en el SXSW el próximo viernes 17 de marzo en el Palm Door On Sabine a las 9pm (hora local), promoviendo su último EP “Another Life” lanzado el pasado mes de noviembre y por el que además desean demostrar que hay una creciente escena indie rock pop muy dinámica en Indonesia que busca ser oída. Y a sabiendas de que este debut podría seguirle abriendo futuras opciones, Imam nos concedió esta entrevista exclusiva para un medio latinoamericano en el que además tuvo una grata experiencia al conocer una banda brasileña durante el Canadian Music Week el año pasado.

Colectivo Bunka. Gracias por aceptarnos esta entrevista. Cuéntanos, ¿cuáles son sus más grandes influencias musicales?

Imam Wisaya. Empezamos con Coldplay y a lo largo del camino descubrimos más bandas y más artistas que más o menos ayudaron en la formación de nuestro propio sonido incluyendo nuestros gustos por Doves, Elbow, Feeder, Ólafur Arnalds, In-Flight Safety, The Boxer Rebellion, Stateless, y muchos más.

C. B. ¿Qué les inspira a componer y tocar su música?

I. W. La música siempre ha estado alrededor de nosotros desde que éramos niños, y nuestro amor por ella creció cada vez más a medida que también crecíamos. En general, nos inspiramos en la vida misma, en las cosas que suceden a nuestro alrededor y en todo el mundo. Y claro, también nos inspira el amor porque éste hace girar al mundo.

C. B. En su opinión personal, ¿cómo analiza el estado actual de la escena musical en Indonesia?

I. W. ¡Muy dinámico! Teniendo en cuenta que nuestra población actual asciende a unos 262 millones de habitantes, puedes imaginar cuantas bandas existen en todo el país. Y realmente, muchas de ellas son muy buenas en lo que hacen y poseen el potencial para avanzar no sólo local sino también internacionalmente. No obstante, tenemos problemas en cuanto a la falta de lugares y sitios apropiados para tocar, pero las cosas están mejorando; sin embargo, todavía hay una disparidad entre la música del mainstream y el indie que necesita trabajarse para cerrar dicha brecha.

C. B. Cuéntanos un poco de su trabajo como embajadores para la ONG Bersih Nyok!

I. W. El enfoque principal de Bersih Nyok! es mantener limpia a Jakarta a través de la educación de sus habitantes sobre los beneficios de vivir en un ambiente limpio de contaminación; participamos ensuciándonos nuestras manos para limpiar las calles, aceras, ríos, y vecindarios. Y también les ofrecemos entretenimiento musical para sus eventos.

C. B. ¿Conocen alguna banda o artista latinoamericano? En caso contrario, ¿qué les gustaría conocer de Latinoamérica en cuanto a su música?

I. W. Recuerdo que compartimos escenario con un grupo de Brasil llamado Fire Department Club en el Canadian Music Week (CMW 2016), ¡eran de primera clase! También nos familiarizamos con Rodrigo y Gabriela de México. Pero aparte de esas dos presentaciones no sabemos mucho más. No obstante, sabemos del rico patrimonio musical en América Latina y que hay muchos artistas que queremos conocer y escuchar. Y claro, esperamos poder llevar nuestra música a Latinoamérica algún día y poder tocar shows en varias ciudades. ¡Crucemos los dedos!

C. B. ¿Cómo ven a lightcraft en el futuro?

I. W. Hemos estado haciendo esto por más de 12 años y no tenemos planes de parar ahora. Esperamos que sigamos desarrollando y progresando como banda y como músicos, escribiendo y creando música que haga sonreír a la gente; y esperamos llevar y compartir nuestras melodías a una gran audiencia en el mundo.

C. B. ¿Qué artistas de Indonesia nos recomendarías para que la gente los conozca y los escuche?

I. W. Hay muchas bandas y artistas. Tenemos un par de bandas muy buenas alrededor como Peonies, Secret Meadow, Bedchamber y Gizpel. También están ikkubaru, Zealspeaks, Woro & The Night Owls, Protocol Afro, The Pretend Company, The Trees & The Wild, Barasuara, Kimokal, Maladialum, Pijar, Bottlesmoker, Stars & Rabbit, y muchas otras más.

C. B. ¿Qué les emociona debutar en el SXSW?

I. W. Estamos muy emocionados porque es uno de los más grandes festivales musicales en todo el mundo. Es el sueño de muchas bandas tocar en el SXSW, nos sentimos muy honrados y agradecidos por darnos esta gran oportunidad. Muchos grandes nombres de la industria musical hoy lograron conseguir éxitos en el SXSW. Habrá un espacio lleno de increíbles grupos y nombres ilustres de la industria musical congregándose en una sola ciudad por una semana. Sólo nos resta esperar, trabajar muy duro y dar lo mejor de nuestras capacidades para asegurarnos que el público disfrute plenamente nuestro show.

C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus planes después del SXSW?

I. W. Esperamos asegurar una gira o al menos dos shows más y tocar en más festivales locales e internacionales para promover nuestro último EP “Another Life”. Además, queremos probar algunas nuevas canciones en las que hemos estado trabajando y continuar compartiendo nuestras melodías con nuevas audiencias. Actualmente estamos trabajando en nuestro tercer álbum que planeamos lanzar ya sea este año o en el 2018.

C.B. Finalmente, ¿podrías dejarnos un mensaje a nuestros lectores?

I. W. La música no conoce fronteras. Somos de Jakarta, Indonesia, y ahora estás conociéndonos por lo que demuestra que nuestra teoría es verdad. At SXSW ’17, lightcraft from Jakarta, Indonesia will make their debut at the festival and share their brand of atmospheric indie rock during their showcase. The group have been together since 2004 when they met while studying together in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

It is very interesting for our Western ears to hear tunes from this group led by Imam Wisaya Surataruna who handles vocals and plays guitars and keyboards. He’s supported by his bandmates, lead guitarist Safarilhaj Febrian Kiaidemak, keyboardist Enrico Prabowo Siek, and drummer Yopi Santosa Sasmita. lightcraft have been during a great job of representing Jakarata’s music scene both home and abroad and have graced stages at festivals such as Music Matters (Singapore), Liverpool Sound City (UK), Canadian Music Week (Toronto), and Zandari Festa (Seoul). During their time together, lightcraft have received lots of great press for their music too, and have appeared in the local editions of high-profile media outlets such as CNN, Rolling Stone, Seventeen and Nylon. Another cool thing about lightcraft is their commitment to the environment. The group act as ambassadors of Bersih Nyok! (Let’s clean!), an Indonesian environmental non-profit whose mission is to educate all the inhabitants of Jakarta about taking care of their city and reducing pollution.

Looking at their credentials above, it’s unsurprising that lightcraft have been chosen to play at SXSW! The band’s SXSW showcase will take place on Friday March 17^th at Palm Door on Sabine (9pm CST). Look for lightcraft to be playing some music from their latest EP, “Another Life”, which was released in November 2016.

We spoke with Imam and during our exclusive interview he told us about the band and about the positive memories he has from sharing the stage with a Brazilian band during Canadian Music Week last year. Check out his interview below.

Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much to accept our interview. Who are your biggest musical influences?

Imam Wisaya. We started off looking up to Coldplay, and along the way, we discovered more bands and artists that have more or less helped in shaping our sound, including the likes of Doves, Elbow, Feeder, Ólafur Arnalds, In-Flight Safety, The Boxer Rebellion, Stateless, and many more.

C. B. What inspires you to compose and play music?

I. W. Music has always been around us since we were kids, and our love for it grew even more as we grew older. We’re inspired by life in general, really; all the things that are happening around us and all over the world. Also love, because love makes the world go round!

C. B. In your opinion, how is the state of the music scene in Indonesia today?

I. W. It’s very dynamic! Considering that our population currently numbers at around 262 million people, you can only imagine how many bands there are across the country. And most of them are really good and have the potential to make a breakthrough not just locally but internationally as well. We do have a bit of a problem with a lack of proper venues, but things are getting better though. However, there is still a disparity between popular mainstream music and indie music that needs to be worked on.

C. B. Tell us about your work as ambassadors for the non-profit organization Bersih Nyok!?

I. W. Bersih Nyok! focuses on keeping Jakarta clean as well as educating its residents on the benefits of living in a clean environment. We participate by getting our hands dirty and helping clean up the streets, rivers and neighbourhoods. We also provide entertainment by performing at their events.

C. B. Do you know any Latin American bands or musicians? If not, what would you like to learn about music in Latin America?

I. W. We once shared a stage with a band from Brazil called Fire Department Club during Canadian Music Week (CMW) 2016 and they were top class. We’re also familiar with Mexico’s Rodrigo y Gabriela. But apart from those two acts, we don’t know much else. However, we do know about the music heritage in Latin America and that there are so many amazing acts out there that we should know more about and listen to. We also hope that we could bring our music to Latin America one day and play shows there. Fingers crossed!

C. B. How do you see lightcraft continuing to grow in the future?

I. W. We’ve been doing this for more than 12 years now, and we’re not planning to stop. We hope that we’ll keep developing and progressing as a band and as musicians, and will continue to write and create music that puts smiles on people’s faces. And we hope to carry on and share our music with a wider audience.

C. B. What Indonesian bands do you recommend that people check out?

I. W. There are a lot of good bands and artists down here. We have quite a few good indie pop bands around such as Peonies, Secret Meadow, Bedchamber and Gizpel. And then there’s ikkubaru, Zealspeaks, Woro & The Night Owls, Protocol Afro, The Pretend Company, The Trees & The Wild, Barasuara, Kimokal, Maladialum, Pijar, Bottlesmoker, Stars & Rabbit, and so many more.

C. B. What are you excited to be performing at SXSW 2017?

I. W. We’re excited because it is one of the biggest music events in the world. Most bands dream of playing at a festival such as SXSW, and we’re so honoured and grateful to be given the opportunity to do so. So many big names got their break at SXSW. And there will be a truckload of amazing bands and illustrious names from the music industry congregating in one city for a week. We can only hope, work hard, and perform to the best of our capabilities and make sure that people enjoy our showcase.

C. B. What are you plans for after SXSW?

I. W. We’re hoping to secure a tour or two, and play a few local and international festivals to promote our latest EP “Another Life.” We also want to test drive some new songs we’ve been working on and keep sharing our music with new audiences. And we’re currently working on our third album, which we plan to release in either late 2017 or early 2018.

C. B. Finally, could you please leave a message for all our readers?

I. W. Music knows no boundaries. We’re from Jakarta, Indonesia and you’re reading about us, so that proves the theory!
