¡Histórico! Una palabra que resume la visita de las pioneras del punk japonés en Philadelphia, cuyas raíces germinaron en la gran ciudad de Osaka hace más de 30 años y que tuvieron el privilegio de poder compartir su música y su amistad con Nirvana, en especial con Kurt Cobain. Y aunque no es la primera vez que recorren Norteamérica (y tampoco esperemos que sea la última), en esta nueva gira Shonen Knife llegará a nuevos lugares en los que nunca antes habían tocado en Estados Unidos y Canadá. La Ciudad del Amor Fraternal fue una de ellas y el punto de partida para su gira promocional de verano, con motivo de su nuevo trabajo discográfico homónimo lanzado el pasado 5 de junio en Japón y distribuido en esta parte del mundo por Good Charamel Records.
Una refrescante lluvia que me recordó las noches bogotanas (días atrás la Costa Este sufrió una fuerte ola de calor que reventó los termómetros en más de 100º F) fue la señal divina para que sus fans cumplieran esta cita en Johnny Brenda’s, localizado en una esquina donde el norte con el centro se encuentran en el famoso vecindario de Fishtown, hábitat para artistas, bohemios, músicos y demás expresiones humanas. Y la noche empezó bien; a las nueve en punto el show calentó los ánimos con la presentación de dos bandas locales: Creem Circus, con su sonido Boggie Rock sesentero, y los hermanos White Mystery, una versión punkera de los White Stripe pero con melodías al estilo de Patti Smith.
A las once de la noche, muy puntuales, el trío de Osaka salió a la tarima y lo que vino luego fue un gran terremoto que sacudió hasta los cimientos el bar. Canciones que no permitieron a nadie quedarse quieto; una sarta de reacciones favorables donde las chicas se sintieron muy felices de empezar esta gira en Philadelphia: Pop Tune, Welcome To The Rock Club, Rock’n’Roll Cake y otras más completaron un repertorio en el que alrededor de 80 minutos fueron insuficientes para escuchar todos sus temas. Sin embargo, las experimentadas Naoko y Ritsuko supieron mantener la euforia de la gente. Y con el debut de su baterista Emi cuyo talento fue aplaudido, Shonen Knife cautivó el escenario.
“Muchas gracias Philadelphia, es nuestra primera vez aquí, ¡y nos encantó el Philly Cheesesteak!”, dijo muy emocionada Naoko, quienes probaron el plato típico de esta ciudad y demostraron su admiración ya que aquí fue la cuna de la independencia de los Estados Unidos. Pero además, recordaron a sus queridos amigos, The Ramones, tocando el famosísimo tema Blitzkrieg Bop, mejor conocido por su coro: “Hey Ho! Let’s Go!”, en el que la algarabía rompió el límite.
Pasada la medianoche y cuando pensamos que ya habían acabado su concierto, Shonen Knife regresa de nuevo a la tarima, esta vez vestidas con sus camisetas promocionales de la gira y cantaron un tema más, en el que me recordó un poco esos conciertos de garaje de Nirvana cuando tímidamente aparecía en la escena musical. Naoko me contó brevemente esa relación que tuvieron con ellos: “tenemos muy buenos gratos recuerdos de ellos (…) conocí a Kurt Cobain y a los chicos en el Glastonbury Festival (Reino Unido), fueron muy amables con nosotras y siempre los recordaremos en nuestra memoria con alegría y gratitud.”
La gira Pop Tunes North America Tour 2012 será recordada como una de las giras a las que más ciudades y pueblos se van a presentar por primera vez, como en Asbury Park (New Jersey) o el sur de California, entre otros. Por eso, Shonen Knife hará sonar el verano con auténtico punk japonés desde el 19 de julio hasta el 22 de agosto. Si su ciudad está entre la lista privilegiada, no dude en ir, ¡no se arrepentirá!

Historic! One word that sums up the visit of the J-punk pioneers band in Philadelphia, whose roots germinated in the great city of Osaka for over 30 years and who had the privilege of sharing her music and her friendship with Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. Although not the first time that they have touring North America (and hopefully not the last), Shonen Knife is to reach new places that had never touched before in the U.S. and Canada in this new tour. The City of Brotherly Love was one of them and point of departure for her summer tour for the occasion of her new self-titled album released on June 5th in Japan and distributed by Good Charamel Records in America.
A refreshing rain that reminded me the nights of Bogota (days behind the East Coast suffered a severe heat wave that burst the thermometer over 100° F), was the divine signal for her fans to meet this date at Johnny Brenda’s, located in a corner where the north with the center are located in the famous neighborhood of Fishtown, habitat for artists, bohemians, musicians and other human expressions. The night started well; at 9 the show warmed the spirits with the performance of two local bands: Creem Circus, with his 60’s Boogie Rock sounds, and the brothers White Mystery, a punk version of The White Stripe but fresh style melodies like Patti Smith.
At 11, very punctual, the trio from Osaka came on stage and what came after was a great earthquake that shook the foundations of the bar. Play songs that didn’t allow anyone to sit still, a string of positive reactions where the girls were very happy to start the tour in Philadelphia: Pop Tune, Welcome To The Rock Club, Rock’n’Roll Cake and others completed a nice set-list that about 80 minutes were not enough to listen to all your themes. However, experienced Naoko and Ritsuko were able to maintain the euphoria of the people. And with the debut of Emi, the newest drummer whose talent was applauded, Shonen Knife captivated the stage.
«Thank you Philadelphia is our first time here, and we loved the Philly Cheesesteak!» Said Naoko excited, who ate the traditional dish and they have showed her admiration because in this city was the cradle of the independence of the United States. But also remembered their dear friends, The Ramones, playing the famous theme Blitzkrieg Bop, better known by its chorus: «Hey Ho! Let’s Go! «, the people had broken the limit.
After midnight and when we thought they had finished their gig, Shonen Knife returning to the stage again, this time dressed in their shirts promotional tour and sang one more time, which reminded me a bit these garage concerts of Nirvana when timidly appeared in the music scene. Naoko told me briefly that relationship they had with them: «we have very good memories of them (…) I met Kurt Cobain and the boys at the Glastonbury Festival (UK), were kind to us and always remember them in our memory with joy and gratitude.»
Pop Tune North America Tour 2012 will be remembered as one of the gigs to more cities and towns will be presented for the first time, as in Asbury Park (New Jersey) or Southern California, among others. Therefore, Shonen Knife will play the summer with authentic Japanese punk from 7/19 to 8/22. If your city is among the privileged list, feel free to go, don’t regret!
