Logbook Bunka sobre este cubrimiento especial a cargo de nuestro corresponsal Ric Quintanilla, en donde participamos por primera vez en este gran evento de la primavera texana donde se presentaron varias agrupaciones asiáticas, incluidas las del Japan Nite. – Logbook Bunka about this special covering made by Ric Quintanilla, where we participate for the first time in this amazing event during Texan spring, who performed a lot of Asian bands, even Japan Nite.

Día Uno.

La primavera trae nuevos olores, nuevos brotes, nuevas emociones, y ¡nueva música! Este es mi cuarto año que voy al SXSW por disfrutar el Japan Nite y siempre es una grata sorpresa. Sin embargo, esta fue mi primera vez que voy como corresponsal para Colectivo Bunka y estaba muy nervioso. Pero Duvan y Pedro tenía una gran fe en mí y no podía defraudarlos. A pesar de un viaje agitado hasta Austin, había llegado tarde: la oficina de Registro de Prensa estaba cerrada, sin embargo eso no me desanimó y fue así como terminé yendo al show de Galaxy Express alrededor de la 1 a.m. en SPIN Room, realmente quería fotografiarlos. Entonces, no teniendo mis pases validados simplemente disfruté el concierto de esta banda de rock oriunda de Corea del Sur como un asistente más.

Estos tres chicos formaron una descarga eléctrica en el escenario con ese power rock de los 90. Un sonido súper crujiente y conciso, ¡mis oídos estaban en el cielo! Su presentación en la tarima estuvo llena de energía tocando sin parar de principio a fin. 호롱불 (Horongbul) resonaba constantemente en mi cabeza todo la noche. Ya era hora de irse a la cama por un grandioso jueves y recuperar energías para un largo y apasionante fin de semana en Austin.

Día Dos.

Me levanto temprano y recorro 20 millas de viaje al centro de Austin para validar mi pase y mis credenciales de prensa. La ciudad estaba sintonizada con la moda del SXSW, se sentía esa electricidad en el aire alrededor de las 9 a.m. Afortunadamente todo fue bien organizado y pude terminar de registrarme en poco tiempo.

Agarré algo de comer, regresé a mi habitación, organicé mi equipo que utilizaría en el día y me dirigí hacia The Grackie para la fiesta del Japan Preview, abierta a todo público. Este evento es una presentación no oficial, pero se reúnen todas las bandas tanto del Japan Nite como algunas bandas japonesas participantes para dar cada una la oportunidad de que la audiencia los vea y los escuche gratis por este año.

The Mornings abrió el espectáculo con su rock caótico. No estoy seguro si ellos sintieron que era demasiado temprano o si su show fue normal, ¡pero este grupo fue una locura! SuiseiNoboAz fue el siguiente y fueron muy relajantes. Aspectos de funk, pop, rock y un poco de rock clásico hicieron un buen show para todos.

Luego siguieron en su orden: Josy, Yamazaki Chihiro + Route 14 Band, y Four Minutes Til Midnight. Jake Stone Garage y Pirates Canoe despegaron tarde de Japón debido a la cancelación de los vuelos de conexión por los fuertes vientos y las tormentas de arena amarilla que su país estaba soportando debido al extraño clima primaveral proveniente desde China.

Mientras tanto, Teens Runnings subieron al escenario y este trío dio un buen y único aspecto al sonido surf rock clásico, donde fueron ruidosos y fuertes por lo que la multitud los ovacionó. Por el rabillo de mi ojo, alguien había lanzado algo al escenario por la derecha. Corrió un rumor que fueron un conjunto de mujeres lanzándoles ropa interior. Yo no estaba lo suficientemente cerca para comprobarlo.

A continuación, LITE se presentó en vivo y este grupo Instrumental trajo su melodía funk con un toque de algún industrial o electrónica. ¡Y ellos lo mezclan muy muy bien! Finalmente, Charan Po Rantan y Kao=S cerraron el día con una multitud extensa y gigante invadiendo la calle.

Después del Japan Preview, me tomé un tiempo e hice una pequeña entrevista con Galaxy Express. Ellos estaban tocando adentro del Grackie Rock 3, cuyo ambiente íntimo era increíble, con un sonido agradablemente rico y completo. Al estar tan cerca pude sentir la música en movimiento en el aire y retumbando a través de tu cuerpo, simplemente me es difícil de describirlo. En la actualidad se encuentran realizando una gira por los EE.UU. para promover su más reciente CD homónimo; si quieres saber más de ellos solamente chequea su Facebook y su sitio web para comprobar las fechas de su gira.

Tomé un tiempo para la cena y luego pedaleé con mi bicicleta a The Javelina, para ver una banda de Taiwán llamada Cosmos People, un amigo me la había recomendado y la verdad no me decepcionó su show. Es un grupo de Funk Pop cantando sobre qué es lo más piensan y creen los hombres: las chicas. Con sus trajes llamativos, sus anécdotas y su sonido dulce,  su show quedo trágicamente corto, pero la multitud coreaba «una canción más». Aun así, el destino me reservó una segunda cita con ellos, esta vez fue el sábado por la tarde junto con otros dos bandas de Taiwan en la U.T. (N. del T.: Universidad de Texas), y valió la pena.

Y de esa forma, me monté en mi bicicleta rumbo a descansar, ¡porque el evento del Japan Nite era mañana!

Day 1.

Spring time brings new smells, new growth, new feelings, and new music! This is my fourth year going to SXSW for Japan Nite and it’s always a surprise and a great time! But this was my first time as Correspondent for Colectivo Bunka and I was very nervous. But Duvan and Pedro had great faith in me and I couldn’t let them down! As I rushed up to Austin after my day job, I have arrived too late: registration press office was closed, but I was so cheered, thus I went to see the Galaxy Express’s show, who they was playing at 1 a.m. at SPIN Room and I really wanted to catch them. So not having my pass or camera pass I was able to just enjoy as an attendant more this rocking band from South Korea.

These 3 guys formed a powerhouse on stage with great 90s power rock! Super crisp and tight sound, my ears where in heaven! Their stage show is full of energy and is none stop from beginning to end. 호롱불 (Horongbul) echoed in my head all night! Time to bed for a very big day on Thursday and recharge for a long and awesome weekend in Austin.  

Day 2.

I woke up too early this morning! I get up and made my 20 mile trip back to Downtown Austin for my pass and press credentials. City was tuned in with SXSW fashion, you can feel these electricity in the air at 9 a.m. Fortunately, the press staff was well organized and I was finished to join my press credentials on my way in less time!

Grabbed some lunch, went back to my room, sorted my gear for the day and headed down to The Grackle for the Japan Preview party, open to all ages. This event is a non-official showcase, but it gets all the Japan Nite bands and some other Japanese bands together and gives everyone a free chance to see and hear the bands for this year event.

Leading off the day was The Mornings and their brand of chaos rock. Not sure if they were also feeling the early start of the day or their show was running normal, but this group was crazy! SuiseiNoboAz was up next and they were very smooth. Aspects of funk, pop rock, and a bit of just classic rock made for a nice time.

Next was Josy, then Yamazaki Chihiro + Route 14 band, and Four Minutes Til Midnight. Jake Stone Garage and Pirates Canoe left Japan late due to grounded flights from the high winds and yellow sand storms that Japan was getting with spring weather from China.

Meanwhile, Teen Runnings was taking the stage and this trio gave a very unique look to the classic surf rock sound. And they were loud and the ever growing crowd loved it.  Out of the corner of my eye, something was tossed on the stage from the right and reports were it was a set of women’s underwear.  I was not close enough to verify.

LITE followed and this instrumental group brought the funk with a touch of some industrial or electronica. And they blend it very nicely! To sum up, Charan Po Rantan and Kao=S closed out the day with a giant crowd sprawling into the street.

Now during the Japan Preview show I took some time out and did a little interview and caught up with Galaxy Express. They were playing inside at Grackle Rock 3. The intimate setting of The Grackle was amazing, it sounding so rich and full. Being so close and feeling the music moving in the air and rumbling through your body, it’s just hard to describe other than amazing. They currently are on a U.S. Tour in support of their latest self-titled CD; check it out this band up on Facebook and his official homepage to check their U.S. Tour schedule.

Now I took some time for dinner and then biked over to The Javelina to check out a Taiwan band called Cosmos People, who a friend turned me on to and I was not disappointed. Cosmos People is a pop funk group singing about what most guys think about: girls. With their bright suits, stories, and sweet sound it was tragic their set got cut short, the crowd chanted “one more song”. Nonetheless, fate decided give me a second chance with them, this Saturday afternoon with 2 other acts from Taiwan at UT and it was worth it.

Thus, I jumped on my bicycle, roam around a little, and get some rest because the Japan Nite showcase was tomorrow!
