Explosivas guitarras, melodías psicodélicas y alta dosis de emoción y creatividad son algunas palabras que describen este trio coreano quienes estuvieron recientemente de gira por Reino Unido y Malasia. Asian Chairshot hace méritos a su nombre, ya que significa una poderosa (e ilegal) técnica de nocaut para paralizar a su oponente usado en lucha libre. De ese modo su nombre llama la atención junto con su música mezclada de sicodelia, garaje rock y fusión en el que desde el año 2011 siguen este camino demostrando la potencialidad sonora y artística de la escena indie en Seúl.
Comandada por Youngwon Hwang en las voces y el bajo, Heenam Son en la guitarra y junto al baterista Kyewan Park, Asian Chairshot ha recorrido escenarios en Asia y Europa con dos potentes puños melódicos en su factura: Chairshot (2011) y Mask (2013) siendo este último mucho más reconocido por la prensa especializada. Ahora que retornaron a su tierra natal, el trío hizo una pausa para promover su último disco debut llamado Horizon lanzado el pasado mes de mayo, en el que contó con la producción de Jeff Schroeder, el aclamado guitarrista de los míticos Smashing Pumpkins. Entre un recorrido por sus orígenes, sus méritos en los pasados Korean Music Awards a mejor álbum por Mask y su admiración por la música cubana usada en la famosa película documental nominada a un Oscar dirigida por el alemán Wim Wenders, Buena Vista Social Club (1999), Asian Chairshot nos concedió esta emotiva entrevista la cual publicamos a continuación.
Colectivo Bunka. Les damos las gracias por atendernos en esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica Latina. Brevemente cuéntenos un poco sobre las raíces de Asian Chairshot; ¿Cómo se conocieron para luego tocar juntos?
Asian Chairshot. Muchas gracias. En el pasado, todos nosotros ya habíamos tocado en otras bandas. Quería formar mi propia banda, así que decidí intentarlo una vez más. Había pensado en Youngwon quien por mucho tiempo ha sido un gran bajista y el mejor amigo de Heenam por más de 10 años, así que les pregunté a ambos si les gustarían tocar conmigo. Primero ensayamos juntos en el 2011. Y luego, como nos llevamos muy bien seguimos tocando y componiendo juntos las canciones.
C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus más grandes influencias musicales?
A. C. Estamos influenciados por la música de tres artistas coreanos: San Ul Lim, Deulgukhwa y Shin Joong Hyun. Los tres artistas son increíbles en la historia del rock coreano. Si tienen la oportunidad, por favor búsquenlos en Youtube.
C. B. ¿Qué temas les influencia componer sus nuevas canciones?
A. C. Nos influencian las cosas que encontramos en nuestra vida diaria. Todo lo que vemos, escuchamos, hacemos, y experimentamos impacta en nosotros y nos inspira de diversas formas.
C. B. En su opinión personal, ¿cuál es su visión sobre la naciente escena rockera del K-music para llegar ser mejor difundida alrededor del mundo en la actualidad?
A. C. Obviamente es algo muy bueno. Todos los músicos quieren ser capaces de compartir su música con más gente. Y poco a poco la escena indie coreana está empezando a atraer globalmente la atención, permitiendo que las bandas en Corea del Sur empiecen a hacer eso, a darse a conocer. Existe una gran cantidad de artistas talentosos en la escena indie coreana. Esperamos que la gente de todo el mundo continúe prestándoles atención. Les prometemos a ustedes que pronto descubrirán algunas muy buenas bandas.
C. B. ¿Conocen o han oído algún artista o alguna banda de Latinoamérica? (Si su respuesta es no, ¿qué les gustarían conocer América Latina en cuanto a su música?)
A. C. A pesar que no estamos muy familiarizados con su música, hemos escuchado que Mercedes Sosa es famosa en Corea. También nos gustó la música usada como banda sonora de la película Buena Vista Social Club. Pero nos encantaría tener la oportunidad de aprender sobre las bandas de rock más jóvenes de Latinoamérica como nosotros algún día.
C. B. ¿Cuáles fueron sus expectativas durante su reciente gira por el Reino Unido?
A. C. Empezamos esta gira sin ninguna expectativa. Sabemos que muy poca gente conoce nuestra música en el Reino Unido, por lo que sólo estábamos emocionados de poder compartir nuestras canciones con gente nueva en vivo. No obstante, hemos tocado un par de shows (sobre todo en el Liverpool Sound City) y la hemos pasado muy bien. Hemos hechos nuevos amigos y la gente ha reaccionado bien a nuestra música. Nos divertimos mucho y esperamos volver de nuevo ya sea una tercera, cuarta o muchas veces.
C. B. ¿Qué artistas o bandas coreanas actualmente nos pueden recomendar?
A. C. Les recomendamos que echen un vistazo a Galaxy Express y Coreyah. Galaxy Express son una fantástica banda de rock ‘n’ roll. Sus shows en vivo son siempre impresionantes. Y Coreyah son buenos amigos nuestros. Mezclan sonidos modernos y música tradicional coreana.
C. B. ¿Qué planes tienen este año luego de su gira por Reino Unido?
A. C. Después de nuestra gira por Reino Unido, nos presentamos en el Music Matters Festival en Singapur el pasado 23 de mayo e hicimos unos shows en el sudeste asiático, en Malasia. El 28 de mayo lanzamos nuestro primer álbum completo debut, llamado Horizon. Lo grabamos en Seúl a finales del año pasado y fue producido por el guitarrista de los Smashing Pumpkins, Jeff Schroeder. Esperamos que la gente lo escuche inmediatamente, vale la pena.
C. B. ¿Cómo se imaginan la banda en un par de años, en el futuro?
A. C. Espero que podamos continuar mejorando como músicos y como banda. Espero que podamos compartir nuestra música con mucha más gente tanto en Corea como en todo el mundo.
C. B. Finalmente, ¿qué mensaje les darían a los fans alrededor del mundo, especialmente en Latinoamérica?
A.C. Nos encantaría visitar Latinoamérica algún día y actuar para la gente de ese continente. Si lo podemos hacer, vengan a visitarnos por favor. Estamos muy orgullosos de Horizon y no podemos esperar para compartirlo con los fans de la música en todo el mundo. Por favor, échenle un vistazo. Explosive guitars, psychedelic melodies and high doses of excitement and creativity are some words that describe this Korean trio who were recently on tour in the UK and Malaysia. Asian Chairshot does merit their name that means a powerful (and very illegal) technical move to knock out an opponent used by another professional wrestler. Thus, their name catch all the attention with their music mixed with psychedelic, garage rock and fusion. Since 2011 they continue this path demonstrating the sound and artistic potential of the indie scene in Seoul in our present day.
Commanded by Hwang Youngwon on vocals and bass, Heenam Son on guitar and drummer Kyewan Park, Asian Chairshot has traveled in Asia and Europe scenarios playing two powerful melodic fists: Chairshot (2011) and Mask (2013), being this album much more recognized by the international press. Now that returned to their homeland, the trio made a pause to promote their recent full-length album debut called Horizon released last May, produced by the acclaimed guitarist of the legendary Smashing Pumpkins Jeff Schroeder. Between their origins, their merits in the past Korean Music Awards for Best Rock Album for Mask and their admiration for the Cuban music used in the famous documentary Buena Vista Social Club (1999), directed by the nominated German director for one Oscar Wim Wenders, Asian Chairshot granted us this emotional and posted interview below.
Colectivo Bunka. How did you meet and decide that you wanted to play music together?
Asian Chairshot. All of us have played in other bands in the past. I decided that I wanted to try making a band one last time. I’d thought Youngwon was a good bassist for a long time and had been friends with Heenam for more than 10 years, so I asked them if they’d like to play together. We first practiced together in 2011. We all got along great together so we decided to keep playing music together.
C. B. Who are your biggest musical influences?
A. C. We’re influenced by Korean acts like San Ul Lim, Deulgukhwa, and Shin Joong Hyun. All three acts are amazing (in the history of K-rock). If you have the chance, please check them out on Youtube.
C. B. What influences you to write new music?
A. C. We’re influenced by everything we encounter in our daily lives. Everything we see, hears, does, and experience impacts us and inspires us in different ways.
C. B. What’s your opinion about the K-rock music scene starting to become better known around the world these days?
A. C. It’s obviously a very good thing. All musicians want to be able to share their music with more people. And Korea’s indie scene slowly beginning to attract more global attention is allowing bands in Korea to start doing that. There are a lot of talented acts in Korea’s indie scene. We hope that people around the world will keep paying attention to them. We promise that you’ll discover some very cool bands!
C. B. Do you know any Latin American bands or musicians? If not, is there anything you would like to know about Latin American music?
A. C. We’re not familiar with her music, but we’ve heard that Mercedes Sosa is famous in Korea. I also really liked the music that was in the film Buena Vista Social Club. But I’d love the chance to one day learn about younger rock bands from Latin America like us.
C. B. What were your expectations for your UK tour?
A. C. We came into this tour without any expectations. We know very few people know our music in the UK, so we’re just excited about being able to share our songs with new people on live. However, we’ve played a few shows on this tour and they’ve gone well. We’ve made some new friends and people have reacted well to our music. We’ve gotten fun and we can’t wait to play again there for our second, third, and fourth tours here!
C. B. What Korean bands do you recommend that people listen to?
A. C. I recommend that people check out Galaxy Express and Coreyah. Galaxy Express is a fantastic rock ‘n’ roll band. Their live shows are always awesome. And Coreyah are good friends of ours. They mix modern sounds and Korean traditional music.
C. B. What are your plans for after your UK tour?
A. C. After our UK tour we’ve played at the Music Matters festival in Singapore on May 23. And while we were in South East Asia, we were performing a pair of gigs in Malaysia too. Last May 28, we have released our debut full-length album. It’s called Horizon! We recorded Horizon in Seoul at the end of last year. The album was produced by Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder. We can’t wait for people to hear it around the world!
C. B. How do you hope your band will continue to grow and develop in the future?
A. C. I hope that we can continue to get better as musicians and as a band. I hope that we can share our music with more and more people in Korea and around the world.
C. B. What message do you have for music fans around the world, and especially in Latin America?
A. C. We’d love to visit Latin America one day and perform for people there. If we can make it over there, please come check us out! We’re really proud of Horizon and can’t wait to share it with music fans around the world. Please check it out when it comes out.
