LogBook Bunka en la más reciente edición del SXSW 2015 del 17 al 22 de marzo en la ciudad de Austin con nuestro corresponsal gráfico Ric Quintanilla. Día 4: Viernes 20.
Nos encontramos en un muy lluvioso viernes por la noche aquí en la fila esperando para entrar al Elysium para el Japan Nite. A pesar del mal tiempo, el aire se llenó de música de otros espectáculos de la zona junto con la prueba de sonido al interior. Mientras estaba en la fila, me encuentro con varios amigos de muchísimo tiempo: Jonathan y Danielle del Nihongaku [N. del T.: programa de radio que se emite en Bunka Radio en ingles], y Roberto de My So Called 8bit Life [N. del T.: programa de radio local de Austin, TX, sobre cultura geek], quien miraba cómo la fila estaba creciendo en la zona de la terraza, al exterior del recinto.
Finalmente, las puertas se abrieron y las personas empezaron a llenar el lugar con mucha rapidez. Algunos van a buscar bebidas, otros van a los baños, pero la mayoría se apresura a llegar a las mesas a charlar con las bandas y comprar sus CDs antes que se agoten. También compré CDs y un par de camisetas que me perdí en el pre-show, di mis saludos a Audrey Kimura, obtuve algunas botellas de agua, y por ultimo logré una excelente y privilegiada vista en el escenario. ¡Será una larga noche!
Roberto era locutor invitado para la noche y presentó el primer acto: Mahousyoujo-ni-naritai (“queremos convertirnos en chicas mágicas” en japonés). He oído muchos comentarios positivos sobre esta banda, pero trato de evitarlos acerca de las bandas en la gira Japan Nite hasta que yo las escucho personalmente. A continuación, este grupo se sube al escenario con efectos y gráficos proyectados sobre ellos en sonido de 8 bits. Enseguida me enganché. Con sus sonidos de rock, dulces voces femeninas, gritos de fondo, y ritmos de sintetizador al estilo 8 bits, ¡simplemente me encantó! Durante su show estuvieron corriendo, saltando, golpeando el puño al aire… ¡pura diversión de alta dosis de energía de principio a fin! Estos chicos fueron mis nuevos artistas favoritos por toda la semana.
Y entró en escena Samurai Dynamites. Otro nuevo grupo para la gira Japan Nite. Su música tiene un feeling festivo muy japonés con una dosis mezclada de punk y ska. Muy divertida, rápida y colorida narración con sus canciones. Este sexteto mantuvo todo el tiempo la energía para que fluyera por todo el recinto. Créeme, ¡estarás coreando con ellos antes de que se acabase esta noche!
La siguiente presentación fue el retorno de una banda: Pirates Canoe, con su sonido más country. Estuvieron aquí en el 2013 pero como un trio. En ese entonces, prometieron regresar con todos sus miembros, ¡y cumplieron su promesa! Una vez más, Elizabeth lidera el grupo y esta vez añadiendo el bajo, una segunda guitarra con su estilo slide, y la batería, completaron su sonido de la última vez pudiéndose sentir claramente las emociones hechas palabras.
Después siguió The Fin. Muchos describen este cuarteto como chill-wave y me parece que es una adecuada descripción. Su música logra que uno se sienta muy tranquilo y relajado, pero lo suficientemente complejo como para mantenerte en los dedos de los pies. Creo que si te gusta Radiohead realmente vas a disfrutar The Fin.
Otro recién llegado este año al SXSW y Japan Nite fue moumoon. Este gran y activo dueto tiene una mezcla de canciones románticas de amor con otros temas muy divertidos que te hará moverte al compás de estos temas. Yuka y Misaki se sentaron conmigo y nos concedieron una entrevista antes de su concierto. Hablan de su primer show, y lo que el futuro les espera a ellos. Si te los perdiste, por favor, ¡vuelve y escucha nuestra entrevista! Y estate atento para el lanzamiento de su nuevo CD este verano los cuales conocimos previamente 2 temas de este nuevo disco que nos dieron durante su show; así mismo, moumoon estará realizando para este mes de mayo una gira por Francia (Lyon y Paris), así que estén atentos en su sitio web oficial.
Una de las grandes cosas con el Japan Nite, es que siempre están buscando y trayendo una gran mezcla de artistas veteranos y bandas revelación. Y QUORUM fue un gran complemento de este año. Este cuarteto nos trajo un sonido muy rico y técnico rock sureño durante su presentación. Entre el bajista y el guitarrista hicieron un duelo llevándonos un maravilloso espectáculo para sacudir cabezas, mostrando sus habilidades justo antes de que sus instrumentos explotaran junto con las llamas de los triturantes riffs en pleno concierto. Y Shintaro, su cantante, le añadió un gran sonido sensual al grupo. En síntesis, un buen debut y un promisorio futuro para esta banda.
Y cerrando este vigésimo aniversario del Japan Nite en el SXSW, el regreso triunfal de TsuShiMaMiRe por tercera vez en esta gira. No dejes que la estatura de estas damas te engañe, ¡ya que suben como la espuma! Ellas se tomaron el escenario logrando que la multitud consiguiera verlas hasta el final. Después de no conseguir la respuesta que querían, vi a Mari parada junto a mí, simplemente dejando caer en sus pies los cables del micrófono y de la guitarra sobre mí, como si hiciera señas a los fans a que estuvieran más y más cerca; luego, ella balanceó su micrófono como un gancho lanzándolo hacia la multitud, y luego saltó hacia ellos como si estuviese surfeando, rugiendo y tocando con ganas My Brain Shortcake. ¡Todo el lugar se enloqueció de repente!
Y antes de que te dieras cuenta, el show había terminado. Nuevamente, algunos se dirigieron a las mesas donde estaban exhibidas las mercancías, otros están en busca de púas de guitarra en el suelo, mientras que el resto estaban tratando de asimilar este gran espectáculo. Todo lo que puedo decirles es: “¡Bienvenidos al Japan Nite, espero que vuelvan el próximo año!”

Day 4: Friday 20th
Here we find ourselves on a very rainy Friday evening waiting inline to get into Elysium for JapanNite! But ever with the bad weather, the air filled with music from other shows in the area and sound check inside. While inline we see many friends from over the years, Jonathan and Danielle from Nihongaku and Roberto (My So Called 8bit Life) is checking on the growing lines from the porch area.
The doors finally open and people fill the venue quickly! Some go for drinks, others to the bathroom, but most rush to get to the merchandise table to chat with the bands and buy their CDs before they run out. I also pick up the CD’s and Shirts I missed at the preshow, give my greetings to Audrey Kimura, then get some bottle waters and head for a prime location at stage! It is going to be a long night!
Roberto was guest announcer for the evening and introduces the first act.. Mahousyoujo-ni-naritai, Or “We Want to Become Magical Girls!” . I have heard lots of positive things about this band, but I try to avoid anything about bands on the JapanNite tour till I hear them in person. So, this group takes the stage with 8 bit sound effects and graphics projected over them. I was hooked right away! With their rock sounds, sweet female vocals, and scream-o back-ups, with synth 8 bit style beats, I was loving it! The group was running, jumping, fist pounding, and just high energy fun from start to finish! These guys where my favorite new artist I heard all week.
Samurai Dynamites then take the stage! Another new group to the Japan Nite tour. Their music has a very Japanese festival feel with a dose of punk & ska mixed in it. Very fun, fast, and colorful storytelling with their songs. This 6 piece group keeps the energy flowing the whole set! You will be chanting along with them before then end of the night!
Next up was a returning group, Pirates Canoe, with their more classic country sound. They were here back in 2013 but only as a 3 piece. They vowed to be back and bring the whole group, and this year they did! Once again, Elizabeth leads the group and this time adding the bass, slide guitar, and drums they really filled out their sound from last time and you could feel the emotions in her words clearly.
Following up was The Fin. Many people describe this 4 piece group as chill-wave and it’s a fitting description. Their music makes me feel very calm and relaxed but it‘s also complex enough to keep you on your toes. I think if you like Radiohead you will really enjoy The Fin.
Next, another new comer this year was moumoon. This long running pop duo have a mix of smooth love songs that you will find yourself swaying to and then fun pop songs you will be bouncing along with. Yuka and Misaki sat down and gave us an interview before the show. They discuss their first show, and what they future hold for them! So if you missed it, please go back and check out our interview! And look out for a new CD this summer and from the 2 song preview we got; in addition, moumoon will tour across France on May (Lyon and Paris), so you should be looking out in their official HP about these breaking news.
One of the great things with JapanNite, is they are always looking and bringing a great mix of returning and new artist to on the tour. And QUORUM was a great add this year. This 4 piece band bring a rich, technical, southern rock sound to the show! The dueling bassist and guitarist put on a wonderful show going head to head, showing off their skills just short of having their instruments burst in to flames from the shredding riffs they are playing. And lead singer Shintaro adds a great soulful sounds to the group.
And closing out the 20th anniversary of Japan Nite at SXSW is TsuShiMaMiRe returning for their 3rd time on the tour! Don’t let the size of these ladies fool you, they will tear you up! They take the stage and try and get the crowd going. After not getting the response they wanted, I find Mari standing over me, just dropping feet and feet of microphone and guitar cables over me. As she is motioning the fans to come in closer, she swings her mic like a grappling hook and tosses it into the crowd, and then jumps after it and as she is surfing the crowd, roars into playing My Brain Shortcake. And the whole place is going crazy!
And before you know it, the show is over. Some people head back to the merchandise tables, others are searching for guitar picks on the floor, and others are just trying to understand what they just experienced. All I can say to them is “WELCOME TO JAPAN NITE, I HOPE YOU COME BACK NEXT YEAR!”
