Uno de los duetos japoneses más representativos y cuya participación en el aclamado documental Live from Tokyo los catapultó a los escenarios occidentales, habló con nosotros a propósito de su visita a La Gran Manzana a inicios de junio. – One of the most representative Japanese duets whose participation in the acclaimed documentary Live from Tokyo have catapulted to the Western stages, talked to us about his next visit to The Big Apple in early June.

Hace 6 años surgió un experimento sonoro de las entrañas de la capital del sol naciente, en el que mezclaban melodías post-punk con dosis de jazz, hip hop y paisajes hipnóticos sonoros. Lentamente, como olas grandes similares cuando se lanza un objeto en el agua, este dueto conformado por la bella baterista Midi (también hace los coros) y el multifacético Kim (letrista, arreglista, vocalista, bajista, guitarrista barítono, trompetista y beatbox) empezaron a amoldar esta banda cuyo álbum debut llamado Jazooka fue lanzado el 7 de junio del 2007 en Japón. Pero Uhnellys empezó a inquietar los exigentes oídos occidentales con su Live in Europe ese mismo año, grabaciones en vivo de su primera presentación internacional plasmado en nueve temas jam session. Desde entonces, sus frecuentes viajes a Singapur y al Reino Unido se volvieron una agradable rutina musical para ellos. Ahora, gracias al documental dirigido por Lewis Rapkin, Live from Tokyo, lanzado en el 2010, Uhnellys aterrizará en Nueva York para deleitar a sus fans norteamericanos junto con The Girl, Gold Street y Persephone’s Bees en pleno corazón del barrio chino. Por ello, días antes de este grandioso concierto previsto para el próximo 1 de junio hablamos con Uhnellys en exclusiva para Latinoamérica en el que nos cuenta de forma minimalista (como su música) quiénes son y cuáles sus planes para este año.

Colectivo Bunka. Muchas gracias por atender esta entrevista para Colombia y Latinoamérica. ¿Cómo se formó la banda y por qué este nombre?

Uhnellys. Uhnellys corresponde a la palabra U NE RI en japonés y significa en inglés: «ondas grandes profundamente lentas». Me gusta esta palabra.

C. B. ¿Cuáles son sus mayores influencias musicales?

U. Soul Coughing. Hicimos una gira con Mike Doughty en Japón. ¡Un sueño hecho realidad! (sonrisas).

C. B. ¿Qué temas inspira a Uhnellys para componer?

U. La ira.

C. B. Sabemos de la tragedia que sufrió su país; hoy día Japón vuelve a nuevamente a renacer. ¿Cómo fue para ustedes esta tragedia y cuál fue su contribución para la reconstrucción de su país?

U. ¡Nuestro gobierno esconde la verdad! Este es un problema grave. Llevamos a cabo una manifestación en contra de la reactivación de la planta de energía atómica.

C. B. ¿Conocen o han oído cualquier banda o músico latinoamericano? (Si su respuesta es no, ¿qué les gustaría saber de América Latina acerca de su música?)

U. No, no conozco. Quisiera conocer la música underground de bandas latinoamericanas.

C. B. Me gustó su participación en Live from Tokyo. ¿Qué tipo de historias o anécdotas recuerdan de esas grabaciones con Lewis Rapkin y su equipo?

U. Ellos son muy jóvenes, muy amables y conocen más de bandas japonesas que nosotros.

C. B. Precisamente de Live from Tokyo, un tema principal fue el intercambio cultural y musical entre Japón y Occidente. ¿Cuál es su reflexión sobre el intercambio musical de estas dos culturas hoy día?

U. Ahora los japoneses están a la caza de Occidente para mostrar su música. ¡Tal vez para siempre!

C. B. Como músicos, ¿cuáles son sus opiniones sobre el movimiento de J-music en todo el mundo en la actualidad?

U. La música de animé de Japón es muy famosa en el mundo. Grandioso.

C. B. En la historia de Uhnellys, ¿cuál ha sido el concierto más importante que nunca olvidarían? ¿Por qué?

U. Cuando tocamos en el Fuji Rock Festival, ya que es el primer festival más importante de música en Japón.

C. B. ¿Qué planes tienen este año?

U. Lanzaremos nuestro nuevo disco en junio. Y también vamos a tocar en Nueva York ese mismo mes. Conciertos y más conciertos. Eso esperamos.

6-years ago came a sound experiment from the heart of the capital of the rising sun, in which post-punk melodies mixed with doses of jazz, hip hop and hypnotic sonic landscapes. Slowly, like big waves when you throw an object in the water, this duet formed by beautiful drummer Midi (also does backing vocals) and multifaceted Kim (lyricist, arranger, vocalist, bassist, guitarist, baritone, trumpet and beatbox) began to mold this band whose debut album Jazooka was released June 7^th, 2007 in Japan. But Uhnellys began to trouble the demanding Western ears with his Live in Europe that year, live recordings of his first international appearance in nine tracks jam session. Since then, his frequent trips to Singapore and the United Kingdom became a pleasant musical routine for them. Now, thanks to the documentary Live from Tokyo, directed by Lewis Rapkin and released in 2010, Uhnellys will land in New York to delight his American fans in a grand concert together with The Girl, Gold Street and Persephone’s Bees in the heart of Chinatown. So, days before this musical event scheduled for June 1^st, Uhnellys responded our exclusively interview to Latin America in which they describe in minimalist ways (like their music) who they are and what their goals for this year.

Colectivo Bunka. Thank you very much to attend us in this interview for Colombia and Latin America. How did the band and why this name?

Uhnellys. Uhnellys is U NE RI in Japanese. This word means: “Slow deep big wave“, in English. I like this word.

C. B. What are your biggest music influences?

U. Soul Coughing. We did tour with Mike Doughty in Japan. Dream comes true! (Lol)

C. B. What topics inspires to Uhnellys to compose?

U. Anger.

C. B. We know the tragedy suffered your country, in the current day Japan is reborn again. How you were this tragedy and what was their contribution to the reconstruction of their country?

U. Our government hides truth! This is big and worst problem. We hold a demonstration against for re-work of atomic power plant.

C. B. Did you know or did you hear any Latin America band or musician? (If your answer is no, what would you like to know of Latin America about your music?)

U. No, I don’t. I want know underground music of Latin America bands.

C. B. I liked your participation in Live from Tokyo. What story or anecdote do you remember when you were recording with Lewis Rapkin and his crew?

U. Very young, gentle, and they knew Japanese bands more than me.

C. B. In Live from Tokyo, a main topic was about the exchange cultural and musical between West and Japan. What is your reflection about this exchange of the two musical cultures in the present day?

U. Japanese is chasing West now too.  Maybe forever!

C. B. As musicians, what are your opinions about the J-music movement around the world in the present day?

U. Animation music of Japan is very famous in the world. Great!

C. B. In the history of Uhnellys, what has been the most important concert and never have forgotten? Why?

U. When we played in Fuji Rock Festival, because it is No. 1 music festival in Japan!

C. B. What plans do you have this year?

U. We will release new album in June. And We will play in NYC in June. Gig & gig & gig. I hope so.
